Thread: Why become a Master Ranger?

This question is probably one of the most commonly asked questions when entering in any of the professions that borderline medocracy... Everyone seems to cut short their training to get a decent level in one of the more brokenly good professions. So let's have a power discussion about the Profession, and it's possible combo professions.

First and Formost a Master Ranger Can Master any Marksman or Brawler skill for combat purposes and still have Skill points to spare... Argueabley Wayfaring/Trapping seem to be the most useless skill trees depending on your combat Profession. Right now i've realized i can be a Master Rifleman, Ranger 4-4-4-0 and a CH 4-3-0-0 Now that's not a bad deal in the slightest. Ranged attacking, good creature to hit mods, prone crawl speed out the yin yang, and massive tanks to keep the mobs at bay. Personally i'd all my CH skills in a new york minute if trapping was powerful enough to tank for me. I could pick up some mediocre medic skills so i wouldn't have to be such a wuss in the field all the time.

Master Ranger isn't easy to get i think the scout grind is what makes it really drag out... but it's been the most enjoyable profession i've dabbled in since i started playing this game. I don't feel like i'm exploiting a broken profession to be awesome in PvP, but i'm still good enough to have fun... and much more aware of what's going on when i'm out hunting.

I don't know how many of you all read the guy's post where he rambled on and on about rangers taking notes on how to effectively kill creatures blah blah blah. It's an orginal idea yeah... but i mean come on... you know how many creatures there are in this game? I spend enough time in camps to not want to have to worry about standing 5 meters away from a krayt dragon for 10 minutes hopping it doesn't kill me, while i take notes on it. And if it does yeah! i get to make another 15 minute hike from Mos Taike back to the grave yard.... That's not really my cup of tea. Instead why not take the abilitys that exsist in the game, and tweak them to give rangers a bit more diversity.

Trapping - i know it's currently being worked on, but what they're promising doesn't seem like it's gonna beat a CH's 4-3-0-0 tanking ability. Graul Maulers can hold a mob at bay for what 5-10 minutes? depending on the mob and assuming it's not being healed constantly. Granted i don't expect a single trap that costs a total of 12 varying resourses to have the ability of stopping a mob for 5 minutes, but when i throw adhesive mesh on something i'm sure it could keep them frozen for more than 1/2 a second.

What about giving rangers the ability to stalk animals? We're natural hunters after all, stalking could be a way to give us rangers more of an edge. A hunched over, weapon readied stance, stance that gives us anfirst attack onlyAIM command, and an initial attack modifier. A way to almost insure that you're first strike is a great one. After you're first attack you're placed into normal combat, and your stalking bonuses are gone. Doesn't seem to over powered, but just think about how much damage you'll do on your first strike.

People have mentioned it before... Rangers need a burst swim, terrain negotiation at +100 they can crawl like crazy, run forever... but if they hit water... watch out because they've lost thier thunder for at least 10 minutes.

Don't take this as a topic of me whinning about the game... I'm just stating the way it is. I'm curious to know what other people's thoughts and other choices of backup professions are.

I totally agree that our swim speed should be as good as our walk/run/crawl speeds.
I totally agree we need a traps that are better than scout traps.
I totally agree Rangers need some lovin'.

Here is why I play Ranger.....
I (and many others) play rangers not because they are uber (because they arent),
we play Rangers because we love the profession. I am one of those guys you poked at who
has notes on a couple hundred creatures, their ranges, how to kill them, wether they BAF or not, etc... you know... Ranger knowledge.
Most of the things you spoke of are in the works according to SOE. That and a couple of nickels will get you a cup of coffee

I love being a Ranger because it fits my style of play. I love to explore. I dont mind
walking 5000m to see something. I DO think SOE need to add a little more to their worlds though. If you put a cave full of lvl 1 creatures and dont give the player any reward for killing them all... dont call it content...
nothing makes me happier than to kill a red con tough mob and loot a pair of shoes...

Rangers do need a lot of work, but it will be more of what we already have.
If you dont enjoy playing a Ranger now, you probably wont enjoy them later on.

If you feel the need to hold a creature at bay for 5 minutes, then CH is a better fit for you. If you enjoy tracking creatures while camo'ed... think thats called stalking btw...
then a Ranger is a good choice.

Please dont take this post as a rant. Im definitely not.
I just have people ask me 10 times a day why Im a ranger and they dont seem to
be able to grasp my answer.... 'Because I love being a Ranger'
They cant understand how I could like something that doesnt increase my damage or
allow me to charm creature or that would allow me to hit someone in the eye...
I simply tell them, 'Thats why Im a TKM as well!'
They usually stop bugging me after that.

The reason I enjoy being a Ranger and want to become a Master Ranger......hmmmmmm

The thrill of the hunt.....the harvesting of resources (its like christmas) .....The fact that almost every group wants your help whether for tracking or camps...Being one with the environment...

I am also a BH and CH....so I get my oppotunity to kill-kill-kill and can still come home to my first love (Ranger)

i too love the ranger experience and i think that the word experienceis why we love the profession. it seems to me imo that those that are in this profession are the people that are really lovers of the whole star wars saga. thats why we dont mind walking 5500m on dantooine to go see the ruins of the jedi temple. we are the players that just love the sw universe and thus like to take our time looking around.

as for traps i agree they are horrid in fact im actually considering dropping all ranger traps entirely to dedicate the 15 pts(14 for trap 1 for master) to another profession. they are fairly useless if you are soloing because you waste a turn to blind a mob that despite its blindness still runs right to you to attack (**edit**!?) . in a group they dont do too much good either why use adhesive mesh to "stick" a creature if you got 2 brawlers standing on top of them any way ? i woould like to see the addition of some npc traps but i guess thats another thread.

a far as wayfaring i love it ! since hitting lvl four i very very very rarely get agged by any creature unless its a really high lvl like a rancor. true the bonuses you get for speed arent really effective unless your traveling very rough mountains but the fact that you dont have to dance around the "red dots" helps. afterall the shortest distance between two points is a sttraight line.

i also find that as a ranger im almost totally self sufficient. i dont need very much creds ,in fact ive never had more than 200k before ! alsoas stated above the ranger is useful to every member of a hunt party whether it be for foraging, tracking, concealment, harvesting ,or camping.

ranger- its the profession few can understand ,even fewer can enjoy, but the profession everyone is glad to have in the hunt party

I play Star Wars Galaxies because I'm a Star Wars fan. I play a Ranger because I love to explore and to play a support character with specialized skills.

People complain about how neutered Rangers are (and Riflemen and Carbineers and Droid Engineers and ...). I don't care. I play my Ranger the way I want to play him and I take advantage of what I have instead of griping about what I don't. Being a Ranger is about overcoming obstacles using stealth and patience over brute strength. To me, this is fun game play and allows me to explore the Star Wars universe from a perspective I never thought I would experience.

Plus I think Ranger is the coolest title of them all. It just sounds impressive...Ranger.

I've enjoyed Ranger a lot. I don't P v P, the GCW holds a bit of my interest, but not a lot. I really enjoy exploring odd, out of the way places, and looking at (or fighting) odd and unusual creatures.

So, Ranger was an obvious choice for my play style.

I love this profession. Yes, it has problems, but at least we are not so uber to be complained about that we end up with nerfs every other day. When is the last time you heard someone say "man, they should nerf those Ranger Camps"?

I enjoy the hunt. Most of the time, I go it solo. When I run into groups, I can't begin to list all the requests for assistance. Guilds are the same way. I have tons of requests to join them cause they want a Master to join them on their hunts.

Who can resist wandering into a group, and throwing down our uber camp? Ohhh, ahhh, wow that thing is nicer than my house...ect

Still can't hold very well in a PvP fight, but I don't want to anyway.

Long live the Ranger Profession. It is good to see the increasing amount of Ranger titles seen on my beloved Tempest. There was a time when I could count the Rangers there on one hand.

/cry wow...i forgot about how much fun it was to run 7km to see the old rebel base on dant...and seeing the greenfire rocks...and...seeing the planet of dant...it was fun...BUT..it could have been better IF:

My traps worked on the 5 storm troopers i encountered, My HTFB Had a cloning center in it so i didnt have to run 7km again once i got Dbed but a NPC, my /areatrack had picked up the ancient graul 200m away so i didnt get incapped by it, i had a /track so i could track vortor(sp?) lizards to get scouting xp, my HTFB actually kept creatures away so i could heal in peace, I could go into the tents so it wouldnt be so lonely all by myself, I had profession that let you be the master of the wild.

...............Wow! Although i'm not to sure what that all means......it was the most inspirational thing i have read on these forums so far

Now, my reason for being a Ranger. As others have stated, i love being able to go out and explore all of the planets. As a true star wars fan, i dont care if visiting Jabba's Palace didn't give ANY missions out, just being able to step foot in it brings a chill down my spine. I can't really explain it, its the coolest thing being able to check out all the locations that i love from the star wars universe. Thats why i am a ranger. I want to be able to go out and explore every aspect of the planets.

Yea, froma gaming perspective, we have some issues to work out, but i plan to stay no matter what the issues are. Ican solo without much of a problem, and when i join a hunting party, everyone always loves it when I take out our uber camp. Just hearing al the reactions of the players was well worth the time i spent getting up to that level. Especially hearing someone who has never seen it before. I have faith that the traps will be fixed and we will get some new ones. Wayfaring is nice to have, especially being able to camo a player without mask scent. This can save a 15 min wait for the group because one person got aggrod by the "red dots". Tracking also comes in very handy. Not knowing whats around us, being able to pick up what is where. Or finding a baby for a Creature Handler, and its also good to be able to harvest. People need resources!

Well then, thats why I am a ranger. I have faith in our profession and i have found that this isone ofthe most mature profession out there in the galaxy. It seems the other professionsdon't have that unity that we have. This is whyI tip my hat to all of the Rangers out there.Take care, and good hunting.

Well posted, for pretty much everyone above. Hehe..

I've always loved the thrill of the hunt, the strategy in taking down an animal or finding out that "Oh no! It's social! Burst.. Burst **edit** you!... no, not Water!? ahh..." heh.. always so entertaining. Getting to figure out how good a creature is before you take it on. And knowing that so long as your mask holds out, you might survive the spawn that just dropped on your head.

Can't beat knowing that I can burst for a full minute, covering over 500 meters. Calculating the long process of exploration, and finding all sorts of neat shops along the way. I happen to be a bit of a shopping fanatic, so exploration not only yeilds new animals, locations, but it shows me new shops or well made homes. I picked up CH.. just because I need a mini tank for all my crappy pistol skills. Today, I found a baby grand wrix and near crapped my Maborweave pants. I tamed it right away and just picked up a 6500 ham cat, all just because I explored the right area.

Luck, Hunts, and being safe no matter where you are on a world, is why I wish to become a Master Ranger. All I need is better traps, and I'll really enjoy the whole process.

I wish to speak a word for Nature, for absolute Freedom and Wildness, as contrasted with a Freedom and Culture merely civil,—to regard man as an inhabitant, or a part and parcel of Nature, rather than a member of society. I wish to make an extreme statement, if so I may make a emphatic one, for there are enough champions of civilization; the minister, and the school-committee, and every one of you will take care of that.

I have met with but one or two persons in the course of my life who understood the art of Walking, that is, of taking walks, who had a genius, so to speak, for sauntering; which word is beautifully derived "from idle people who roved about the country, in the middle ages, and asked charity, under pretence of going à la Sainte Terre"—to the holy land, till the children exclaimed, "There goes a Sainte-Terrer", a saunterer—a holy-lander. They who never go to the holy land in their walks, as they pretend, are indeed mere idlers and vagabonds, but they who do go there are saunterers in the good sense, such as I mean. Some, however, would derive the word from sans terre, without land or a home, which, therefore, in the good sense, will mean, having no particular home, but equally at home everywhere. For this is the secret of successful sauntering.
