Thread: Was never in it for the money, but...

Due to a chance encounter when I was only five hours old to SWG, I've never had to worry about cash while becomming a Master Ranger. Now that I have the title I'm getting requests to harvest for people. I did a job on Endor for 100k collecting 24k units of meat. What's the going price for our services? Was I taken for a ride, is that a normal fee, or were they being generous? I'd like to do my class proud and not be known as The Fool of Endor. Also, I read somewhere on this board that one Ranger is selling camo to Jedi at 40K a pop. Is selling camo a decent side business? It would seem that 40k is a bit much, but whatever the market will bear, I suppose.

Well, that's like 4 CPU for what you harvested, which may be good if it was crappy stats, but may be a "rip off" if it was the best spawn ever on your server.

As to how this stuff prices out, that is going to vary server to server, it's going to vary based on the quality of the resource, and it's largely a matter of what it's worth to YOU. I know some Rangers who pretty much never do any organic harvesting for contract or money, choosing to instead just support their guild or friends. Some are in it strictly for the money and only take large contracts, some harvest everything they can and then sell at the best price they can, some go out of their way to harvest and sell to newer crafters who maybe can't afford some of the bidding wars that happen on the forums. It's largely a matter of your personal choice as to whether you do it at all, and what you think it's worth to you. Unlike dropping a harvester and letting it pull resources out of the ground for you whether you're on or not, you've actually got to be there, ATK, spending your "game time" doing "work" if you're harvesting for money. So... the real question is, what is that time worth to you?

Personally, I enjoy exploring all the planets, and see hunting and harvesting as "something to do" while I'm doing that. I will also sometimes hunt good shifts, andI will get resources for in game friends who need it. I typically don't hunt "contracts" for any one person, but I'm on a bunch of "will hunt for hire if the time is right" lists that crafters run and send mail to when there are good shifts. Sometimes I really enjoy going on a big hunt, other times I'd rather tool around with my friends doing stuff, or work on my piloting skills, or...

Camo, OTOH, is somewhat of a bone of contention here. I personally don't sell it becuase I think it was the wrong solution to the CL1 crafter issue it was intended to address, and I don't feel that it will offer those crafters any benefit as it will break on them and will get them eaten when it does. I will often go out of my way, tho, to on the spot hunt up what I need to MAKE some camo kits and camo up those that are with me, or random people who ask nicely, giving them the best benefit I can (camo applied by a Master Ranger will full mods AND BE'd clothes). Again, that's mostly a matter of choice for you if you want to do it or not. I personally have more than enough money for myself at this point, and now find myself making it faster than I can spend it, so it's not a case of haivng to sell something to make cash - I do'nt need that, and at least so far havne't had a great desire to run any kind of merchant business (tho some of the fine Rangers here run Ranger & Scout vendors, and have some truly amazing shops).

now me, personally, i harvest for 1 or 2 people, as i have enough cash i dont really need to worry about it. my asking prices for the current shift of good hides on starsider has been between 15-20 cpu. as for camo kits, i've only been approached twice to sell them, both in an IC manner, so the pricing has varied. *shrug*

Thanks for the info. The 100k was alright for me, since it was my first commercial hunt as a MR, but seeing as how the OC of the meat was 907, next time there will be a price increase. I think I'll experiment with the camo on the bazaar and see how that does. I'm the only MR in my guild and have come up through the ranks mostly on my own so please forgive the silly questions I might have from time to time. If any of you are on Intrepid, I'm usually online from 5pm - 10pm Eastern US time. Name is Dryx.

Don't forget, that while you can set the price, you need to be willing to haggle. Goods/services are valued at what people are willing to pay. Also, you need to decide what you consider a good price for the time it takes you collect enough resources to fulfill the contract.

Now that I have said that, 4 cpu is certainly a grind quality resource price, IMO.

yes, and if you RP, haggling is great fun. tweak the price 1-5 cpu either way, have fun with it.

Im on Intrepid and the prices there usually go from 4 to 10cpu depending on quality. Right now there is a very good spawn of Dant wooly hide (hurtons), not sure on the price as I havent sold any yet but I think its around 10cpu. Look me up if you have any other questions.

and remember... barter.

if you collect the hides, ask for some free armor in exchange for a 1 cpu discount, that way you dont go spending your cash as soon as you make it.

Get used to it, with the increased resource requirements on armor and some of the chef/be stuff, harvesting biologicals is where the big money is at now.

There are a ton of big mining cartels/contract miners on most servers (heck I'm one of them) and its pretty easy to get good mineral resources cheaply.

Harvesting on the other hand is time consuming, can't be done by lot trading or miners running while your asleep etc. With the changes lowering the harvest take for the scout dabblers (or BH/SL types with a bit of scout) and the rest of ranger being so totally useless, the price on good biologicals has gone way up.

I've never seen so many massive contracts offering 15-30cpu before.

I usually hunt when i need something. so i was never really a rich ranger but i do generally keep about 1mil in my bank just incase something happens. but i have sold camo before "i know i will get flogged for it" and made over 1million for it because some guy couldn't hide on yavin to save his life, though he probably could've simply hired me to protect him for cheaper.

My play style is really irratic i may be online for 15mis or 4hrs just depends also i may hunt somethig or i might not hunt it depending on what it is. DO NOT hunt for Tat or Talus avain!!! you will end up pulling your hair out of your head.

For the longest time I sold only to friends for low low prices and still made a fortune.

Then I found that trading stuff was the way to go and did that. Free clothes, food, weapons - in exchange for large stacks of meat/hide/bone. And I was happy.

Then the amazing shifts started. I would go out and in two hours have a large stack of stuff to sell at 100cpu - and I got richer and richer. I refused to harvest for under 50 cpu, and still made mad money.

I branched out into a single harvestor and wind generator. I get lots of minerals and energy I can sell for next to nothing, and make more money. And things are good.

I had a source who wanted grindable grade meats. 3 cpu and 10 cpu depending on the type. I made big bucks there.

I ran missions a lot of the time to get stuff - like meats and hides. Double payout.

Now, I harvest for fun mainly, selling hides (generic run thru the magic machine) at 1 cpu to a friend who hooks me up with clothes. I have some Krayt tissue I can trade for pistols. I looted some decent weapons. Armor is mainly my only expense, and I don't use it all that often.

Last time I looked, 38 million and climbing. I really need to do some missions for the xp, but will get around to it.

JB- I too am on the bartering system.

I trade tissuesand bone shards for somevery goodcraftable weapons on my server (FWG5 Featherweight with a mod DPS of 450 with no pistol skills and a +41 to accuracy built it...unsliced and unpup'd).

But here's a tip: hunt creatures that do two things for you, such as Rancors. They give you hide, advanced battle armor segments and another loot drop that gives +6 (or so) to health. kilicknicks give advanced assault cores which are notorioiusly hard to make, at least on Eclipse. when you have all the hide, armor cores and armor add-ons...throw 'em in a bag and give 'em to an armorsmith. My current padded armor (6600+ kinetic) was given to me by a armorsmith (who also has a Ranger toon) because of all the stuff I throw at her. Right now, my only expenses are basically shuttle fees and house maintenaince.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

As I see, on Eclipse Trading Board, crafters have sometimes problems with fullfilling their contracts, despite very good prices for hides and meat (20 - 30 cpu). Maybe the number of Rangers is decreasing or they prefer to hunt for uber loot. IMHO doing contracts is the best way to get a lot of credits fast. Even if you spent only one evening per week doing contract hunts you will have enough credits for all your needs.Ranger template is not good for pvp so I dont needtop and expensive armours and weapons. I like to explore planets, doing quests and trying to solo high level mobs (sometimes successful, sometimes not). I am not interested in becoming "rich" but I can get credits fast when I need.
