Hello.

Ihave been playing SWG since day one, with my character Rogan Kash on the tarquinas server. I've sincetried armorsmith, merchant, smuggler and BH, never attaining master in any, and never being satisfied with the ways things were going for me. Or what I was getting out of the game.

I wanted to be a ranger from day one, so I got all those other professions out of me and now I am a novice ranger. So far I love it.

My question is...What weapon should I use??

I am a master marksman, and I have been raising Rifle. Is this the best choice?

I know that I want to stay with ranged combat, but what about Carbines?

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

While the link did not help me make a choice, it did show me that any weapon choice is a solid one.

Use a Ranged weapon because as of this moment, the creature to hit bonus doesn't apply to melee.

It also depends on how you want to role play.

I am a carbineer and kind of wish I was a rifleman, because real hunters in rl use rifles...

Otherwise all you need to look at is how YOU feel like killing your animal.

Want to pistolwhip it to death? Choose pistoleer.

Want to shoot out it's legs? Choose Carbineer.

Want to blow it's mind? Choose rifleman.

Hopefully they will fix melee's creature to hit bonus so you can chop a durni to pieces easier.

It's really up to you.

I use both a rifle and a pistol. Carbines left me cold, both IRL and here, so after attaining Master Marksman, I weighed which two lines to delete to get more incidentals - carbine and ranged support won (or lost) and were slammed.

Rifle - I spent the time and skill points to make it to Rifleman. The T21 qual was the sole reason. On a good day, I am taking down big creatures with 3 shots, from concealment, no attacks on me. Bang, bang, bang, and go to the next. gotta love it.

Pistol - I am a 0-1-0-1 Pistoleer. Thought about being a smuggler at one pt, but everyone was doing that. Great for close fighting, and with a really good pistol, you have fast speed and good damage. Get it sliced, it gets better. Scout Blaster is my choice, sliced and diced.

With these two weapons I pretty much can solo anything I chose, within reason. No, I do not charge into aggro mobs of wrixes - but I do pick em off one by one with luck.

A word of caution - check the condition of your weapons often. Some dumbbunny (me) didn't and you just can't kill doo doo with a zero condition weapon. I may have as well been using my fists for more damage. For a giggle, try and fix a zero'd weapon, it only makes it worse.

Buy quality. A poor workman blames his tools, but good tools can save your butt in a firefight.

I choose a rifle myself. At first because it made sense to me a ranger is using one, and now because I've grown to like the tactics involved.

On our server (Tarquinas) there hasn't been some resources around to make T21s, so we have to settle for laser rifles. But have it sliced, bring a crate with power ups and you're pretty set for most hunts.

To compensate for the short range penalties I always carry a spray stick with me, which is really fast but does less damage. It saved my butt a lot of times.

There's one huge downside to being a rifleman as a ranger though: melee penalty. It takes a bit of time to position yourself, get ready and attack what you're hunting. But ever since they put in the "warping code" I've grown to get accustomed to getting whole packs warped right on top of me. While a pistoleer might have a chance to burst run out of it, a rifle man is dead meat, you don't even have to try, lol.

Still, I love being a rifleman, and even with my sliced rifle I sometimes do over 1500 dmg per shot. Which is fairly decent agains 10k ham mobs. Then of course I got a bantha to help me out when a creature wants to melee me. And I can solo most tough mobs in game. Just don't get into hunting the social species. But I guess that goes for any kind of weapon you're using.

As I said I am working the rifle angle at the moment.

As far as rifles go though I relly like the E11 compared to the Laser Rifle.

Once I get my LR sliced I may change my toon however...

I myself have used a pistol since becoming a Ranger. I had a rilfe up until that point, but I gave it up because I wanted a closer-ranged weapon(I still have my bowcaster, though ). Anyway, my decision was made even easier because I'm 2/4/2/4 in CH (going for Master), as well as being a Master Ranger. Pets hit the health bar more often, so the pistol was the best choice for me.
