Thread: Ranger Erosion

Does anyone else feel a slow erosion of our usefullness happening over time, thanks to mounts and vehicles?

Dont get me wrong I love my swoop, and I think its a great star warsy addition to the game, but I cant help by frown at how its being implimented with the classes.

My main group skills that people ask me for is camo kits on planets like Endor and Dath, and my tracking skills. Last night I go and join up with a group, everyone is riding swoops and off we go. The stop and getting off and tracking and getting on just broke up the trip way to much until finally the group said screw it we will just spread outa bit because we can move much faster anyways.

Camo was also un-needed and bulky to use because you cant use on mount/vehicle. When zooming along on a swoop you are past most mobs before they pop, further I am not sure NPCs are evening aggroing you on a swoop, and the mobs that do agro never get a chance to hit. Last night I went from the research outpost on Endor, without mask scent or conceal, pointed north and just sat back and watched. I made it all the way to the zone wall without taking a single point of damage.

Terrain nav is all but pointless now, though thats morea scout thing since our terrain nav is more about crawl speed :/

It would be different if we were getting some of SOE's promises addressed, but the fact that its all but dead on that front makes being less usefull all that more annoying.

Just some ramblings.

Dude, you are not alone. I love being a Ranger, but we are the frontiersmen of old. As the world grows up they need us less and less until we are no longer needed at all. Soon we will become a problem as we complain about the lack of wide open spaces. Or we will be put into theme parks droning on to dead-eyed tourist "This is the house where Luke Skywalker grew up. If you look to your left you can still see the blaster marks....."

Definitely agree... would be cool if we could do some kind of area track while riding our speeder. Maybe not as accurate since in theory, we're looking for tracks sniffing the wind etc...

We still have these cool camps... even if they are useless in protection from aggro creatures and the rain...

I think our days are numbered, as all the planets turn into Coruscant with player cities stretching from one side to another... who needs a wilderness guide when there is no wilderness.

"as all the planets turn into Coruscant with player cities stretching from one side to another..."

That brings a question to mind:

  • Anyone know which Planets are still off limits to player buildings?

I recall someone noting that Endor was still city free, are any of the others?

Dathomir may still be city free, I think Yavin is as well.

I think the greatest thing for a ranger would be if we had special abilities while mounted. When you think of a ranger in anything else (D&D or whatnot), you probably think of them riding a horse and kicking butt. Maybe if, as a ranger, I could be mounted and still use my pistoleer special moves or something....

I was okay with vehicle mounts. THre is a lot you miss while speeding by at mach 5 I noticed.

I was okay with our overall usefullness dwindling away, because there was always that something extra.

But for me the straw has finally fallen that will now include my voice among those with this concern.

POI has made me obsolete.

No one needs a guide to see the treasures of Endor any more.

/sigh

Ah well. Such a small thing. Something I totally understand. I'm being selfish, I know.

We just don't have a clearly defined role in the game. We've got some neat features, but no well-defined place among the other classes. If and when that gets decided, I think things will improve for us, because we'll get new skills and abilities focused around that role.

As it stands we can do 3 things better than anyone else: make camps, hide, and harvest animal resources. We can still navigate terrain on foot better than anyone else, but with the introduction of mounts and vehicles that has lost some of it's importance. Unfortunately, that's pretty much all we've got for now.

NRaas, you mentioned in another post that there were going to be some announcements about the Ranger profession published and that we wouldn't see changes to our profession for a while. When can we expect these announcements?

I am a Master Ranger... I will make my OWN path, and my OWN identity.

I will use /areatrack to the best of its ability. I will discover for myself its problems and work around them.

I will use my camo kits to the best of their ability. I will discover which NPC's they do not work on and avoid them.

I will use my superior harvesting knowledge to create less waste and more profit.

I will use my rescue skill, to protect the people in my party, even at the risk of my own death.

I will use my traps and camps in whatever way best benefits my party or my employer.

I will complement my unique skills with whatever it takes .. CH, Rifleman, TKA... to become an effective hunter and benefit my PA or my client by harveting natural resources.

I will not let the lack of passion for my profession on the part of the developers, or the frustration of not having our concerns addressed by the people that have the power to change things prevent me from being the best I can be.

I am a Master Ranger... and that is what we do.

"POI has made me obsolete."

Yea I gotta say I dont understand the reasoning behind putting the main features on waypoints. I suppose anyone that wanted them could just look on the web for the coords, but still takes out some of the exploration potential.

On a bright note I got a Ewok Tree Village Badge last night! Never gota POI interest badge before and I didnt get any from the caves I visited on Endor. Not sure if this is a new feature or not, never heard of it at any rate.

"Yea I gotta say I dont understand the reasoning behind putting the main features on waypoints."

The main problem is many players don't read the forums and many don't know of the massive network of information available on the internet.

Those players kept complaining about how little content there was in the game...

  • While all the time, there was a lot of content they simply had never located.

----

Being of theExplorer archetype myself, I never plan to utilize the POI tab...

  • That way I can locate the cool stuff in my own time, making it all that more special.

Eh, ditto to that NRaas. I found the Rogue Corsec Base on Corellia about 5 days ago, made me proud. Heh.. those POI's really takes a lot of the fun exploring out of the game.

But I suppose it was bound to happen, once Player Cities become more populated, things are to become more easily accessible.

Yep- new feature. It sounds like there are 45 badges like this in total (not sure who determined that). I got one for the Ewok Lake and Tree Villages last night myself. Kind of a cool way to record your travels through the universe.

I'm 8,000 advanced trapping points from Master now... still feeling worried about the future of Ranger. I'm hopeful some of the nifty changes occur at some point to better define our roles in this game, but am worried we'll have to wait a long time for this...
