Thread: There's way too much nothing out there.

I realize we don't want a million animals taking up server time when nobody's around to see them, but this problem seems to be getting worse. I went out today to what used to be a favorite hunting spot of mine. The Agrilat swamps used to spawn swamp humbabas and savage humbabas which are a good source of domesticated meat. The last 3 times I've gone up there to look for them, I have found absolutely nothing. For someone who likes exploring and looking for animals, thisseriously ruins the atmosphere. I spent an hour running around the swamps today for nothing.

There's got to be a million way's to put animals into a sleep mode where they don't take processor time or memory on the servor. I know that rangers have a million and one issues that need solving, but this one has always been a priority for me. If the issue can't be solved for whatever reason, is there any way we can get information about how animals spawn so we can at least not waste huge blocks of time?

What is the deal with the no-spawn areas? I really want to know what's going on.

There's a flight sim I used to play that has a system something like this. Instead of running the full blown object (for example the computer IA pilot and his airplane, the physics model, etc.) the software would instead just reduce the "thing" to a data point. Once you, the player, got close enough to the "thing" it spawned into full blown existence, and did its thing. Once you left the area, it could go back to being just a data point. With a system somethinglike that, the devs could repair area track for us, because when you track you're just asking the server, "is there anything there?". The server then, since it is holding the datapoint, could answer "Yes! 2 Savage Quenkers, 250m Southwest." Once the player gets to within visual range of the thing, it could just spawn. I think that would bea good system if it could be implemented, but then on the other hand they may already be doing that for all I know.

Yea I hear ya man, this has been a pretty big problem since player cities went in and its a growing concern. The problem is this; The server has a maximum creature limit for a given area, so if there are a lot of people taking missions in your area the creature limit will max and you won't see any natural spawns. But, at the same time you need players to force spawns, so if your all alone you might not be able to force any spawns for that area. Kind of a problem there...

Also, its been mentioned that lairs and natural spawns are not resetting throughout the course of the day, so depending on what time of day you're playing you might not see anything because someone may have been there earlier and spawns haven't reset. It's suggested if your hunting for natural spawns to go out after the server reset, of course if you play late at night like me towards the end of the server cycle this doesn't help much.

The one thing I have noticed is that Lok is very uninhabitated. You can go for thousands of meters without seeing anything on the area track. This would contradict the idea that the more missions taken from the planet the less "wild" missions there would be. Lok, at least on my server, has very little player activity and only a few player cities, last time I checked 5. Dantooine on the other hand has lots of cities and there is always players to be found on the planet but I can still easily find "wild" spawns.

This has been a point that was recently brought up. You can find some relavent threads here:

Hmmm. There was a duplicate Ranger thread with more information, but that seems to be missing now...
