Thread: New Novice Ranger question solo technique

I’m a Novice Ranger (2/0/0/1) and Novice Rifleman (3/0/0/1). At the moment I can hunt Mountain Squills solo (10k credit missions, difficulty 45).

My strategy involves creeping up to one, throw Adhesive Wire Trap, run away to 60m and hit them with Head Shot 3 and Mind Shot 2. It’s not a fool-proof technique as I can end up Incapped when they break free (or the trap fails to work) and run after me! I can’t afford a proper Doc buff (10-12k for 3 hours buffing).

One of the things I have considered to stop them chasing me is to use a Battle Droid to get in the way to hold them off while I Head Shot 3 the creature. I understand some people can use up to level 10 creatures for the same result.

What are people’s feelings on this, what is the technique other people use?

Hi,

Since you have some skill with the rifle and a solo hunter, it is surprising that you appear to be missing conceal shot. This is extremely useful for solo hunting as a rifleman and I would strongly advise you to pick it up. While prone and scent masked you can often fire away without attracting any retaliation from animals; they simply cannot spot you.

The problems with this are that occasionally you will be spotted, in which case you either need to have a pet or droid standing by ready to take the animal's angry charge, run with a mix of threaten shot and warning shot, and run with a mix of phecnacine darts followed by adhesive mesh traps (these work great in combination). Actually do all of the above at the same time if you are spotted. :-)

As for your droid question... I have experimented with droids, and have found that an R3 with an auto-repair module is incredibly useful when I am too impatient for conceal shotting and when the animals are high-level. The little fella just keeps healing himself and works well as a damage magnet for me while I remain at a distance. The auto-heal ability is more valuable than combat ability in these little tanks, in my opinion, as I am quite capable of dealing out offense so long as I have the droid to keep the animals at a distance from me. I do not use him all the time, even for high-level critters, but he can be fun to pull out when I am in a hurry (when I'm on a job for some doctor or armorsmith). For lower-level critters I still stay grouped with my trusty harvesting droid, as he is capable of harvesting more conveniently (while I am still in battle, and he does not attract the attention of angry critters for some reason), faster, and at a higher yield rate than I am able to do.

I also agree with the tactics page -- as a former Master Bounty Hunter, I have never been happier with any profession than when I retired from bounties andbecamea broken yet incredibly fun master ranger. I never buff, I never bother with armor, I have more fun hunting than those who merely wade in swinging madly even though it's true they can harvest more than me over time, and aside from the occasional bit of food and a visit to entertainers I feel among the most free and self-reliant in the galaxy. I hope it proves as enjoyable for you as it has been for me.

Totally agree!

I can take on 7k storm trooper missions alone (relatively) and unbuffed. But I wear wookiee armor for what it is worth and drink brandy (expensive). I say relatively because I usually have a pet out to guard me. Picture me lying on a knoll, below me is the stormie camp. Slowly I conceal-shot them to death. My narglatch stands over me, on guard. Usually I can kill all the stormies (but without brandy this takes a while). Sometimes the last one or two will notice me and then I'll run around screaming like a girl... er, kiting, until I can get the pet to draw aggro. I wouldn't suggest using non-CH pets against too many storm troopers, but against mid-level creatures they should be fine. As soon as they aggro me I switch to Headshot3, but be careful because this drinks mind fast. Conceal shot is different from Headshot in that it hits all three HAM bars, so it has the potential of taking three times as long to kill a creature. But it gives you the freedom of a few minutes of relative boredom, a few seconds of heart-pounding hysteria... er, excitement, and occasional death vs. several minutes of heart-pounding excitement and occasional death.

Otherwise, I think you are on the right track tactic wise. Headshot takes out things much faster so you have to balance the pros and cons against how you enjoy to play. I do the conceal shot thing and when I get tired of it I go and get buffed and run around like rambo-wookiee for a while, no pets, using headshot against all 5 troopers at once. I always feel slightly dirty afterwards though. And I die a lot, which gets expensive.

Get Novice CH and when you can the skill that gives you the Group command and get your self a nice level 11-14 pet with 9k+ health and high kinetic resistance. Let it attack the creature while you pop away with your rifle. There are level 10 pets available with the same stats but they will become invalid at some point in the future and are very expensive. The pet will do little or no damage, but it can take a lot of damage, whilst you kill the creature or creatures with your rifle.
