Thread: Hunting Superstition

Greetings, all. I just wanted to report something I noticed during my recent hunting trip to Dathomir. It was a bug hunt. If this is the way things are supposed to work and everybody already knows this, then let me know, and I will put on my ranger dunce cap (penalty to maskscent and camo) and sit in the corner… of the map.

I noticed that the more I hunted gaping spiders exclusively in a particular area, the more they seemed to spawn.

I had also noticed this when I was hunting Tybis on Yavin IV. However, on Yavin, I really only hunted in one area - west of the northern outpost. On Dathomir, I was hunting spiders in a few different areas. One of these areas was near the Nightsister Stronghold. Yikes to that.

My hunting strategy goes like this: When I land, I check the mission terminals for some initial information on my prey. In this case, I found that gaping spider lair missions pay about 6,500 credits. This tells me that the missions will be fairly easy. I grab a pair of missions in about the same direction. I run missions a few more times to build up a small starter stack, and to possibly scope out what other creatures will drop the resource I want, what variations to the basic creature are around, and how those variations vary in difficulty (and thus harvest). This gives me an idea of how much meat I can pull in per hour if I just choose to hunt by running missions. (I hate hunting for resources from mission terminals.)

Once I have a good starter stack, I head out into the wilds, at least 2-3k from an outpost. I use areatrack to find the animals that I want. If they don’t show up in areatrack, I just move along until they do. This could take some time, so I take in the scenery and take a few snapshots of the interesting stuff I find.

When I finally find what I’m looking for, I will have found either a simple spawn point or a lair. If the lair is named for the creature that holds it (i.e. “a gaping spider lair”), then it represents someone’s mission and I leave it alone. If the lair has a generic name (i.e. “a dead log” or “brambles”), then I work the lair to get all the creatures. For a simple spawn, I kill each wave as they show up (usually three waves) and then move on.

What I found is that the more spiders I killed in one area, the more frequently they spawned. Also, they seemed to spawn in a smaller area. At one point, I had two lairs that were 120 m apart and a third simple spawn of gaping spider hunters (five hunters dropping 190-199 units per fat and healthy – yippee!) One of the lairs was also spawning gaping spider queens. I lost out on one lair when some nearby Nightsisters decided to chase me away (Nightsisters + Talisa – buffs = pasty ranger goo), but I stil got a nice stack.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience when they were hunting for a particular resource, either because this is the way it is supposed to work or they just noticed that this is what happened.

I knew I was very late to this shift (I got there 8 days into it), but in two afternoons, I managed to collect 37k units, and I’ll be on today hopefully collecting more.

This is my first hunting trip to Dath, and I must say that this is one unhospitible planet! Such an angry population…

I know one time when hunting jax's for there meat's that diff lair's would pop out a whole bunch of them. They were quite easy for me even though it was alot of them( i was buffed and halfway up tka) but there musta been 10 or so completly surrounding me. It was a good fight, I was close to going down when the last one fell.
