Thread: complimentary profession choice question

Yes, I admit I am grinding Ranger. But only because that holocube gave me a choice I was interested in trying anyway. Once master Ranger I'll see how the galaxy looks through those eyes. In non-MMO RPGs I almost always play a Ranger first. In SWG when I observed the traits of the class, I actually was more drawn to TKM. I'm looking forward to finding out if I should have played Ranger all along.

I am currently a TKM and Master Rifleman. In another 10k survival xp I'll need to begin dropping portions of my two combat professions to start building Ranger. I don't want to make my ultimate choice of complimentary combat profession till after I've mastered Ranger, so I'd like todrop a little of one and then the other. (note I realize that Rifle is likely the better compliment profession, both for RP and as a balance of skills, but TKM Ranger could be an odd if not interesting choice).

My observation so far: a master melee profession makes gaining trap xp almost unfair as even unbuffed the 200xp per trap mobs do little harm, while master Rifle makes getting scout xp all the easier with among other things conceal.

My question: which profession do you feel will make it easier to gain master Ranger? TKM or Rifle.

I amconsideringdropping a little rifle and keep TKM till I get ranger 0004, then begin to drop TKM. I of course would keep conceal, and likely headshot3 (say 313-), while trying to keep TKM to at least 411-.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.Having played from the begining as two professions that became a template, I'm aware of the feelings some veterans of a profession have toward those they view as 'just visiting' and seemingly not being respectful of fine points of a particular class/profession. But I hope you will trust my sincere interest in Ranger and lead me down the right proverbial track.

Thanks,

Dran

Really, you are probably better off choosing one of the combat professions to drop while keeping the other one at Master level. Getting trap xp is not really a problem at all (just get buffs and armor and you will be fine). But you will want to kill stuff for scouting xp and a Master combat profession is much better at killing than two lower level combat trees. As it is, either is an excellent choice. And there are quite a few TKM/Rangers out there. It works quite well. But so does the rifle (and any of the combat professions out there, really). I personally chose Master Rifleman over TKM because of the limited TKA damage types (although I've switched over to Squad Leader now). In terms of actual killing, both have their merits. And, with the coming combat balance, that should become even more apparent.

Executive summary: Pick the one you want but keep it at the Master level.

I agree with Nemo. Choose your favorite, keepit at master, and drop the other. I favor rifles, as I tend to stay out in the wilds for days at a time, and thus doctor buffs aren't readily available. I have a pack full of booze though! It's all very redneckish - get hammered and shoot stuff.

I can't say which is better but I am MTK and working on getting to ranger. I think TK/Ranger can still have an interesting RP idea too. All I can say about getting the scouting XP with TK is I haven't had any problems, I join solo groups and go havest off of 9 - 15 creatures per lair.

I gained BF like crazy while leveling the unarmed branch. FAR FAR more thanI got leveling pistoleer. By using a ranged weapon ( and either adhesive mesh, or warning/supression shot) I don't get hit very often, reducing wounds and battle fatigue. Also, tka doesn't have many damage types. You take on a high kinetic resistant mob, and you're going to be smacking it around for awhile

Don't forget about TKA meditation wound healing, though (and self buffing). That was one of the hardest things to drop in TKA. BF can still be a problem but self buffing and wound healing make for a very powerful combo.

Both have advantages, however, for fast and furious action and leveling, stay a TKM and you wont even notice that you are getting scout xp.

trapping can be done very quickly, just throw the wire mesh traps on every thing that you kill...that'll drop their melee defenses.

Thanks to all for the great advice. I went with a drop of TKM, and will test that out for a few days, at which point I can reaquire TKM with about 30 minutes and 620 ap. Draknev, I may come to agree with you, seeing as I know its is easier to gain ranged xp as a master melee, than it is to gain melee xp as a master ranged. But that was my choice and we'll see if I want to revert in a few days.

I'll start hunting as a novice Ranger tonight and see where things take me.

Thanks again,

Dran
