Id though Id throw my hat into the ring in respect to the Rangers role in the New Combat Revamp had a look at some of the suggestions in the ideas list which got me thinking and Id thought Id share them with you..
The Rangers role can be a little passive in combat overall we have no special moves to call on other than rescue and as such we get to be the 'Decoy' for most combat situations. However we do have the ability to develop base camps with healing capability and also in some cases a manufacturing capability for both food drink and stims etc.. We also have the ability to provide Faction weponary and armour if a user is overt..
GIven that the Ranger character is based on understanding the environment I would suggest that the Ranger should have the ability to offer the following :-
1) Ambush - I think that with the camoflague technique the ranger should be able to camoflague memebers of his own squad from not just animals and npcs but from Players too the ability to remove his team from the radar and render them invisible I think would play an enormous advantage in the opening of a particular combat session. I would suggest that once combat is opened however the camoflague gets negated for that individual not the group.
2) Player Carry - Given we have the role of protecting players and individuals etc.. Rangers should be able to pick up other incap players and carry them as far as they need to so that they can remove them from a potentially hazardous situation currently a players gets floated across the ground for short distance I think it would be more advantageous if the incap player cold be carried away to a nearby camp for recovery.
3) Animal Combat bonuses - Given the Ranger understand the environment and those creatures around him he should gain significant advantage in killing animals getting bonuses in to hit etc.. not so much that the large creatures become easy but enough to suggest a working knowledge of the physiology of the individual animals.
4) Agree with the harsh weather idea in as that damage should be taken by players in severe weather conditions.. In the SW universe they play a lot on the sand storms stripping a man of all flesh and in the current situation that doesnt happen.. by settting up a camp the Ranger becomes more important and gets a more defined role in respect to hunting parties etc..
5) Traps - Traps are great for use on animals however I think Rangers should be able to apply some traps to Players and npcs I think that some of the effects would be just as damaging to people as they would to an animal. Not wanting to infringe on the combat medic these effects would not impact the HAM but more state effects such as dizzy, blind, and stunned.
6) The Ranger should similarily to the Smuggler have an ability to escape combat I would suggest that he has the ability to hide in the wilderness if things get too intense and the ranger is looking death in the face we should be able to disengage and do a runner however once out of LOS we should then be able to camoflague ourselves such that whoever we are fighting player, animal npc cannot find us unless they walk right over us. One of the things that the current combat lets down is that even if there is no LOS of your target you still can track it in the game means there is no way for players to use the cover available to get in and out of situations during combat.
7) Rangers should be able to detect other Rangers and their teams camoflagued.. this means that if you have a Ranger in your squad the chances of being ambushed are much lower. This would also help with the Rangers role in a group.
8) This suggestion is not particular to the Ranger its just something Id like to see in the future and thats dual wielding..!! pistol in one hand sword in the other..!!
Any views on the above..?? the more that sign up to ideas like these the more chance we have of getting some impact on the Ranger profession into the game..

Taking things in order -
1. If you had taken time and read prior posts on some of this idea - you would have found out that invisibility is not gonna happen, as it is too easy to use 3d party programs to find "invisible" people. Camo may be used to disguise us as yellow dots, but not remove us from radar.
2. Not a bad idea. The medics will scream tho.
3. We get bonuses already.
4. Not a bad idea. Damage due to sand storms should happen. But what about planets without sand storms. I can avoid Tatooine.
5. We are PvE. At best, the BHs could have asked for traps for NPCs, but blew that idea when they dropped the requirement for Mastering Scout. I can see trapping pets, not people. And dizzy doesn't even work on animals now.
6. Maybe, but the way you explain it, we can already probably peace, so who cares?
7. Goes to number 1, as #1 is dead in the water, this idea dies unborn.
Please read the outdoorsman proposal, read the stickies, and do searches on what you proposed. Not a flame, just the cold hard truth.

Well, I like most fo your ideas and I relly hope to see some Critter Combat offensive and DEFENSIVE (most likely to get implemented, IMO) mods. Yes we have some (one) already, but it does not allow us to kill critters better than non-Rangers. The carry skill could work, but that is already granted to Doctors. Environmental damage would be great, but due to server lag it would be hard to implement (it is possible to have one person in the group be in a storm and another person have bright, clear skies. All in all, I like your thinking.
BTW, I am NOT ready to give up on stealth/invisibilty just yet.

Check the mechanics section on my stealth thread. To mess with the haxxors you can simulate an effect already in the game, which switches off the info going to the client totaly. What is hackable is the idea that we can be removed from radar, but still targetable or generally seen otherwise, even in disguise.

Excuse me a second,
I was not aware that we had any ability to grant faction weapons and armor while overt or to overts?
Can someone elaborate on this please?
Thanks,
Steelraven

We cant grant them. But if your overt and drop an HTFB you get your factions terminals. I dont believe the mission terminals come as part of it though

And you have to pay extra FP at the camp. You are better off buying it from the recruiter.

Whu??? Other than plinking NPC camps for coin I've kept out of the GCW, that and I try to stay as covert as possible. But faction terms? In an HTFB?
Really?? Does that make the camp attackable too?

If the Ranger is overt and if he/she pops a HTFB, then it is possible to use the lil teeny weeny camp terminal to buy faction items. You do pay extra, I guess it's a value added tax for not having to talk to a recruiter.
Is the camp attackable? Um.... what is there to attack? The Ranger is already overt, open to attack by other overts. But what can you attack in the camp -the leaky roof, the inoperable chess table thingus, the floating chairs, the potted tree?
Oh horror of horrors... you attacked my camp. Here, let me make a new one.
I do know the camps do appear on the planet map, if you take the time to look for them. Golly, gee whiz, we can get on a map, but our roofs leak.
Not like in the 50 someodd minutes the camp will be there you are gonna be real enthused about it being on a map.

YT-1300 can be used by entertainers to heal BF. Our HTFBs deserve the same.
Traps affect people and NPCs. Heck yes, we deserve this.
Won't do invisibility because 3rd party programs can undo the concealment? Okay, let me get this straight... SOE isn't going to do something because cheaters have an easy way of getting around it? Crazy suggestion, SOE. Third party programs that effect SWG will probably send some funky data streams to your servers... look for the funky data.
Don't tell me they can't find out who would use this kind of third party program since its basically the old Diablo II maphack and Blizzard hunted down those people. SOE, are you gonna admit that there is something Blizzard can do that you can't? Not good for press.

They can't hack it if no data goes to the client. We have gone over this already.

I'd like to see rangers (and other professions for that matter) get access to a basic writing and grammer tutorial. Not sure if this could be covered in enough detail to help, but I'm thinking any improvement would help me to get past the first few lines in most posts without weeping for the future of this country.
