Thread: Need Combat Prof Help

Basically I'm not sure which combat profession to go with, I know how things used to work pre-CU but I'm just not sure now. I'll list the ones I'm thinking about and why I'm thinknig about them and if anyone has any insight into it or other idea s or just wants to say I'm crazy that's fine lol.

MBH -With the changes to get BH having that and M Ranger just seem to fit since that's essentially what we do is get paid a bounty for the resources we harvest if we're on contract.Plus a nice array of combat abilities and weapons to pick from.

TKM - What's not to love about not needing any armor with their natural armor now plus improved center of being, let's them cut down on the damage quite a bit.

Pikeman - Always thought it had potential even if it was the red-headed stepchild of melee professions pre-CU, now it has some good debuff abilities and has always had cool looking moves that remind me of Darth Maul from episode 1, which is probably the closest I'll ever get to Jedi lol.

Pistoleer - I know it doesn't do as much damage as the others but I like seeing those fast hits plus I'm hoping they'll still let Pistoleers use 2 pistols whenever they get around to that point.

Commando - I've considered this one but don't know much about it other than it has some hard hitting weapons.

I guess the main thing I'm wanting is solo survivability as I don't belong to a PA or even a city atm and any information is greatly appreciated, thank you all.

Well I'll try to answer - maybe it will stir up some discussion that will be of use. I think one effect of the CU is that it's made these questions more difficult to answer. Before we'd say rifles or TKM, maybe pistols if you like pain (sorry JB :smileywink, but a lot of us are trying to figure things out, and so far we haven't figured out what one combat prof. seems to compliment ranger (like rifles did pre-cU) well.

I tried MR / MBH and I enjoyed it (esp. the improved duelist stance special), but I thought that it was ultimately a little too slow for my taste. My impression is the MBH is meant to be stacked with another combat prof, so it's lacking in stuff on its own (esp. speed wise). It was perfectly servicable, but it just seemed too slow to me and to not do enough damage for the speed.

The advantage of MBH is that you will have more skill points left over -- maybe you could invest them in medic or some more marksman skills to get up your speed / damage potential.

The disadvantage is the BH community. I'm sure some are stand-up guys, but I took one look at their forums and all the complaining about 'noob' bounty hunters and thought not for me. Also, I'm not much of a pvp'er, so I figured the only use I'd make of the investigation tree was to let my jedi friends know when they were on the terminals.

So I dropped most of my FS skills (ouch)and took upmaster ranger / master carbiner, and I seem to be doing ok, as its specials seem to compliment my traps very well. It still seems slow to me, but it's marginally faster than BH and I'm holding out hope (must be the ranger in me) that some of its specials are still not working right (as some people on the carb. forums seem to claim).

Well - that's my estimation of BH as well. Maybe someone else could talk about the other combat profs? Or maybe someone can stand up for BH -- I'll be the first to admint that my three days of giving it a try was not a very thorough test....

I have been playing TKM/Master Ranger ( CL80 ) and found it to be acceptable as a "solo" creature hunting profession.

-- I enjoy roaming around without need of weapons or armor. ( I fight bare handed )

-- No problem with an equal level creature one-on-one (slower kill rate than rifle, but I take little damageand have no armor/weapon degredation ).

-- If I bungle pulling a single critter away from a lair, and get a group of them, being unarmed allows a very fast retreat.

All-in-all TKM/MRanger is a very viable combination creature hunting/harvesting.

P.S. WARNING - If you are after NPC's it's a lot more difficult to get within melee range and/or pull an NPC without getting ganged up on.

Thank you both for your replies, the information is greatly appreciated. From what I understand a TKM has the equivalent of 6000 armor naturally but 500.00 defense from improved center of being, the MBH has potentially higher actual armor but only 240.00 from improved duel, at least I'm guessing it's 240, the basic one is 120 so I'm just assuming that it doubles like the center of being, I guess I'm wondering if the higher physical armor but lower bonus would still equal more than what the TKM would have. I know both are better at fighting one creature at a time.
