Thread: Why I love my broken Ranger

We've seen a lot of (legitimate) negative comments lately -- but for a change, here's something positive about Rangers...

I'll agree that the Ranger profession needs work. It's very obviously incomplete in its current form, and there are a lot of great suggestions coming up on this board. I'd love to see Conceal come back, more/working traps, and I'd *love* to see a Tracking skill. But despite all this, I'm still loving my character so far, and can only see things getting better.

I'm an explorer at heart, and it's from seeing/discovering new things and places that I get enjoyment from MMORPGs. To me, the fact that Rangers are essentially "Scout2" isn't entirely bad, since the abilities we get help to make us better at exploration. And as someone else said in another thread, we're pretty formidable in the field of hunting.

Using my rifle and a combination of traps and /maskscent, I've cleared out entire nests of white/yellow-con hostile creatures by myself. The animal AI is pretty impressive, and I've actually found myself thinking strategically *like* a hunter. Guaging my optimum range, watching their roaming patterns. Watching which animals shelter the babies (and they will), and which are willing to wander further from the nest. Using my enhanced "Examine" to judge how dangerous the creatures are, how likely they are to swarm me, and how lethal they're likely to be when they attack. Often, I'll circle the nest a few times, laying low, using /maskscent, always just outside the animals' notice.

Then, from long range, with /maskscent active, take a shot. If you've analyzed the nest properly, you'll probably get no reaction from most of the creatures. If I do, the fun really starts, as I have to lay down a couple of quick traps to snare or root the extras, back away from the pack, debuff and blind the remaining animals, and try to pick them off before they tear me to shreds (it's not my style to wear armour and I'm a little dismayed that everyone seems to feel compelled to have it -- it's ended up looking like a player Clone Army, where everyone looks identical).

In short -- I still really enjoy my Ranger, because it lets me do the things I love. I can explore with (relative) safety, and I can observe and hunt animals in the wild (and there's some pretty cool animal behaviour to watch). I can set up a camp and heal over time, staying away from cities (and lag!) for extended periods. It's perfect for the explorer in me, and it doesn't hurt that Rangers are (so far) pretty rare.

Yes, the profession needs work -- it's pretty shallow so far, and lacking in several areas, but that doesn't mean we can't have fun with it while we wait.

Thanks for posting this thread! The ranger was the only profession the really appealed to me because I knew I loved being a scout. Then I read some of the negative threads and had second thoughts but in the end decided to go for it - do what you love!

Anyway, I am loving it so far and I know it will only get better!

Agreed!

Pretty much nothing works but I still love being a ranger. I know one day they will get around to it and fix it and thats good enough for me. I love my enhanced Examine too. My buddy was like I think we can take that and was umm man thats a level 24 and he said how could you know that.. I'm a ranger!

I enjoy the big camps people come by and go "Man, Nice tents!" and the speed and long long lasting maskscent. I find myself going man I need to put maskscent up not realizing it has been up for minutes!

we will get fixed and be a great profession I am sure of that.

I agree completely....and its pretty obvious we are going to get some more goods as time goes on anyway so I'm not concerned right now. A tracking ability would be cool though...maybe integrate it with the *find* system? LIke type "/track <creature>" and it generates a waypoint and a green line path to the closest creature of that type. That would make a cool Master Ranger skill to be sure and would make them the demand of any group.

Great thread Alisa! I, too, am very happy with my gimpiness as a ranger. Although I hope that we get more goodies in the future, there is nothing stopping me from enjoying what we have right now! Keep up the positive attitude everyone!

Amen Finally someone speaks up, I love my Broken Ranger too.

It's not what he can't do, its what he can do.

Here is my stor

I generally lead a party of 3 on keren to Kaadra Imp/creature destroy missions. Anyone who has played on Naboo knows the Keren North Ridge line. With the combo's of maskscent and terr nego, I have enough time to see and prevent my group from killed. Now and then I slip and we get tangled in a mess of shaupauts, a couple of quick Adhesive traps and a nicely placed body shot and my group is fine.

Now I group with a Combat medic and an Engineer, between the 3 of us there is almost a limitless supply of Metal, organics and Bone armor. The only thing we lack is an entertainer

Hey guys, I posted this toa different thread, but it seems more applicable here.

I have been playing a ranger for about 2 weeks now. I have to say that every day I become a little more embolden with this class that is half completed. How about we look forward in time to the Space:Expansion and petition for skill changes that improve with that Expansion. I mean for example, someone has to Explore Space and find those nice little mining areas or set up the first camps on NEW uninhabited planets.

I can see ways to keep the EXACT skill tree and only change what the skills offer at each level to make a Ranger more like an advanced exploration profession than a Scout II.

Until then, I am training all Level I Ranger skills and a few Level II skills on Corellia in Kettemoor.
