Thread: Rangers and the Space Expansion
I know we still have a ways to go before we're involved with the Space Expansion, but just as in every class, I'm still curious as to how Ranger skills would carry over to Space...
If you had to take ourRanger skills and apply them to space... here's some ideas about how they could cross-over.
Camoflauge: The first thing that comes to mind is Cloaking. Rangers should be the masters of stealth ships. We know Cloaking exists in Star Wars, we've just never seen a visual of what this looks like. I think pilots with Camoflauge skill should be able to cloak near hostile ships.
Trapping: The main question this and other skills brings up is, will there be creatures in space (other than the ubiquitous space slug??) IF they find a way to say "yes" then we should be able to construct some sort of trap to effect them. However, Sonic Mines, and the sort will most likely be given to the Commandos.
Camping: Wow... this is a really interesting idea... can Rangers build mini space platforms? Anyone who's played the SW Flight Sims will know that there are small bases that fighters can be based out of... will Rangers be the ones who can construct these? Or will camping in space really be non-existant?
Harvesting: Similar to trapping, this assumes that there might be creatures in space. If there are, we're going to be harvesting Space Slug Meat... (think of how much meat a Space Slug would give?!!)
Terrain Negotiation: The real bonus in my opinion would be in that a Ranger is qualified or has the ability to fly the fastest ships... we should be the ones in the A-Wings... Tie-Interceptors... We should have the fastest time through asteroid fields... I wouldn't want it any other way...
Creature Knowledge: Creatures in space? I'm actually starting to hope that I'm not flying around in an X-Wing and running into "space mynocks"... ::sigh:: that would actually suck... No creatures in space please.. even though it screws rangers...
Foraging: Hmm... this is actually interesting if we can forage space junk... I'd like to find some cool stuff floating around in space... ![]()
Creature To Hit: +10 to hit the giant space slug.... YIPEEE.....
Rescue: This is more useful imho... this is all about Wedge saving Luke's rear .... This is about Han Solo taking out the Tie's while Luke fires the torpedo... Oh yes... Rangers will be saving the day in space...
What do you think?? Does this meet your expectations? What could you possibly add as a Ranger? Specific ship certifications? Asteroid Negotiation? /maskexhaust ?
I just hope the Space Expansion allows us to expand on our character class instead of just offering everyone a loaner ship for turning in faction points

These are pretty creative ideas but realistically I don't think that modifying each profession and their associated skills is the developer's intention as regards the space expansion. Instead, I see them adding ships, new planets and new space expansion related "stuff" for the crafters to build. Maybe even a new Pilot profession that folks can take. But modifiying Bounty Hunters, Rangers, Medics etc. to use their existing skills in space? Not likely.
So you think everyone should just get one new skill: Pilot and call it good? Where's the joy in that? Why wouldn't my character class effect my abilities in space? I don't think I'm making that big of a leap here... if my profession is Master Tailor... do you think I'm going to be able to outmaneuver TIEs? (Converselly I struggle to understand how Tailoring would effect space at all). .. But I CAN theorize as to how various skills may effect your abilities in Space. If everyone is on equal ground in space and it simply boils down to your flight sim skills with a mouse... well... I suppose that'll just have to do...
However, I'd like to voice my opinion that being a Ranger should at the VERY LEAST open up specific certifications and possibly even a piloting class that is exclusive to Master Rangers.... (aka.. an A-Wing Certification).
From a game dev standpoint, why would you release an "Expansion" to your game if it did not build upon the concept of character advancement? I fully expect to see additional skills added to many professions that allow you to have a unique role to playin space. Otherwise.. your identity in space is reduced completely down to how twitchy you are with your mouse...

I'm sitting in a cantina. I hear a group of 10 talking about going to Endor, or one of the new high level adventure planet.
Member 1: "well at 6600cr a ticket, that would be 66,000cr for all of us to go.
Member 2: "Thats expensive. Maybe we should just stay here and find some dewbacks.
(Insert Master Ranger)
Ranger: " I overheard you talking about taking a hunting trip to Endor, but were afraid of the cost."
Member 2: "Whats it to you?"
Ranger: "Well I have a fast ship to get you there, a Mobile field base with crafting stations to replenish your supplies and heal your wounds, and I can track down the big game you want to hunt. AND I'll do it for 30,000cr round trip for all of you. I'll will be your guide the whole time and protect you from creatures you arn't quite ready to handle yet. You could literally stay in the wild for days taking down big game!"
Galactic Big Game Hunting Party Leader.
Even better if we can create hunting hides, buff creature to-hit for groups, etc..
What do you think?
how does a ranger "track down the big game"?? i didnt think there was tracking?
I like your ideas Xion. For awhile I've wanted to see class specific gear or items. My questions are, will they add skills to the boxes we've already goten or will there be new boxes for us to acquire. If the later, are they gonna up the skill cap?
Hehe, I know you can't answer, just popped into my mind.
Now, I realize that using EU references is considered second to devil-worship by some, but seeing as mynocks were mentioned all of once in the movies...
Everything I've read about mynocks suggests that they are spacefaring creatures that tend to attach to ships like barnacles and make loud obnoxious shrieking noises. Wedge Antillies had an R5 unit called Mynock because of its tendancy to scream in combat. (X-Wing: Rogue Squadron, misc. other novels)
A side note, a Twi'lek resteraunt on Coruscant prepares a delicious meal based on mynocks. Do not try the roast gornt. (I, Jedi)
I don't think they will modify the professions like you are saying (be kinda cool if they did). I think that instead they will add a couple of different types of pilot professions, and probably a spaceship building artisan elite profession. I also think that there will be new planets and new species. Another great thing will probably be the fact that they might give us more skill points so we could choose to get some piloting abilities.

Oh, I also forgot, you do not want to fly a cloaked ship in the Star Wars universe. Even the best designs that haven't been made yet are double-edged swords.
A cloaking device, Star Warsian style, creates a bubble of solitude. Things outside the bubble can see through it but not into it, as if there was nothing there. No sensors or comm broadcasts can pick up the bubble's existance either. However, nothing inside the bubble can see out. A cloaked ship cannot tell if it's about to run into a star, let alone strike at the enemy. If the ship is under power it may very well be detectable by engine emissions that escape the bubble. All in all cloaking is a Very Bad Thing.
