Thread: Idea for new attack skills vs. NPC's

First off... this is just an idea I came up with to toss out as a discussion. Not sure if this would be a good thing, or if it would tweak anyone off, but hey, might as well spill it.

If we were to get a (much needed) revamp, I would like to see 1 or 2 skills that could be added that would give us something to use against NPC's and possibly during PvP. As we can only use traps against animals, I was thinking of something a bit different. It would probably make those people happy who want to see Rangers have sort of a "Rambo" feel in the GCW.

I'll keep the conversation directed at PvNPC for now... PvP could be discussed later.

Idea #1: New Skill - "Throat Slash" If you can /conceal and sneak up on a NPC from behind without being detected, from under 5 meters, you could use this attack to deliver an initial attack which would induce various states. My first thoughts are root, dizzy, stun, and a NASTY bleed (I'd love to see the "puke" animation used here). At this point, you'll probably want to get yourself out of there, and get distance for a ranged attack. This would work VERY well as the initial attack against tough NPC's when you're in a group.... once you hit him with this, the rest of the group could open up on him. I'm thinking that this could ONLY be used when the target is not in combat, so... it could only be used once. If you happen to have your /conceal broken before you hit him...well.. better hope your group is ready to save you.

Idea #2: New Skill - "Place Shrapnel Mine" Similar to the above, but to be used when there is a group of NPC's. It would not deliver quite as devestating of an attack as a Throat Slash, but again, would apply states such as knockdown, dizzy, stun, and a moderate bleed. To be used, you will need to place the trap within 10 or 15 meters of any NPC to have the states take effect. You could have a xx second timer on it to allow you to get a bit of distance before it goes off, and again, have your group ready to open fire once it does, as you will initially have all the aggro on you.

In theory, these same skills could potentially be used in PvP somehow, maybe to a lesser effect, but it would really give us a unique role. It wont give us any "advantage" once normal combat starts... just an up-front "suprise attack" which to me, seems like something a Ranger would be good at accomplishing.

I will now open up the floor for constructive discussion.

Doesn't appear to be too much of a problem, overpowering wise, so it seems possible. It's basically a sort of "pull" mechanism for a ranger against an npc, though it doesn't take one away from the group like a trap does, but instead does major damage on one target so that the group can focus on it soon thereafter. Similar affect with your mine idea, which is an AoE but can be used effectively against npcs without much detriment to the game itself.

Can't see anything wrong with em off the top of my head, so good work. heh

That WOULD be cool. place explosives at an enemies or group of enemies feet and sneak away, and remote detonate. sweeeeetness to the max. but, I think commando's might not like us getting the ability to plant explosives.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

Very nice, 1 on 1 vs NPC would really be effective. I could see all kinds of nasty combo's for this.

I like this, I agree with P on his point about this stepping on commando's toes. they could go the cammo rout with this though, we craft and use it, and commandoes can use it. As long as the minesdontshow up on radar PvP would never be the same.Any were you go a Ranger might have placed a mine.

Ilike this, especialy the Mines. give crafters the ability to make components ( state applying detonators, concealment moduels ), powerups.

As far as the "Throat Slash" thing........is anyone else thinking Ranger K-Bar or Bowie Knife? Replaceing the crafting tools with this little honey would add an element of realism to the game. ROFL,make it customiseable andit could be the Rangers Light Saber.

I was thinking more on the lines of a machete (just to keep it a bit more Ranger-ish)

To me these ideas seem more like Commando territory, but in this game a Commando is more of a pure-combat frontline soldier than a guy who gets dropped behind enemy lines and uses sneak tactics. I was actually just reading through the descriptions of their Field Tactics line. It's strange but it's just like how we have envisioned the Ranger combat role. Here's a sample:

Field Tactics I demonstrates to the Commando how to use terrain and cover to their best advantage.

Field Tactics II allows the Commando to view each situation in a light that reveals how to exploit all available advantages to their benefit, regardless of how slight the advantage would be.

Field Tactics III brings the Commando to the point where their mind can become as dangerous as their blaster.

Field Tactics IV demonstrates to the Commando how the sharp knowledge of psychology of an opponent is just as valuable in combat as understanding their anatomy and physiology. A cornered Field Tactic Commando should never be underestimated, and should be avoided at all costs unless they are incapacitated or otherwise distracted.

I'm not sure how the Commando boxes ended up with these descriptions because they've got nothing to do with the skills they get. However, they seem perfect for a skill line in Ranger.

/agree on all

A machete would be quite Rangerish
