Thread: Social creatures might be a blessing?

Actually, regardless of lures, this is already a blessing for all the melee Rangers out there. I used to hunt around lairs of agro/social creatures speecifically because I could count on them assisting each other in attacking me and then falling prey to my AoE attacks. Now I can use the same tactics on these large creatures which used to just stand there whiel I killed their buddy. it definitely makes the hunting go faster when you can kill six creatures with six swings of the sword instead of killing one creature with three swings of the sword. (Do the math).

AoE attacks for melee characters rock and if you're not using them, you're missing out in my opinion.

Tsion,

While I agree with you, the mobs I think the original poster was talking about are way too hard to take on more than one at a time. Fambaas, bolle bols, kaadu. These creatures were the grinding material for solo leveling, and when they are good xp to hunt, are extremely hard for the hunter. From what I am seeing, without lures, this game is moving completely to a group based hunting style, where there are multiple melee fighters and medis keeping those melee fighters alive. While this may be good, I also see it as bad. There are too many factors pushing Rangers away from group hunting. These same forces push people to take up CH, and are the very reason that CH is so reviled, but so very neccesary. I am fortunate, I no longer need scouting xp or combat xp of any kind. I can hunt what I want when I want and suffer no real penalty. However, for those that want to make an elite combat proffesion mastery before the end of this year sometime, this is a bad move. It requires an even better tank, of which there are none(besides creatures). You say you wont grind to master? At some point almost every master resorts to grinding. There are now very few non social creatures out there, and almost all of them under level 15 or so. Yes you can grind social animals, but it is a lot more difficult. Ill conclude only with this: Bring those lures out soon!

"If that's the case, this change would make Rangers the only profession that can solo these lairs."

Nah. CHs can solo all of these missions and much harder ones as well right now, social or not.

I think I was subconsciouly defining "solo" as not using pets either. Even I'm a CH but pulling out the pets is like turning down the difficulty setting.

Besides, Holo floated those ideas that CHs may eventually have to face risks in PvE combat. In which case they may take up Rangering to get the lures.

Sorta hard to see the ray of sunshine as I lay there incapped after my favorite targets, Grondas( grondia?) turned social and stomped me into Ranger jelly. But I do see your point.

Unless you got someone with semi-decent traps, you are all done hunting the larger social creatures solo. At least I am not soloing them anymore, tired of seeing the inside of the clone center am I. Good news is I getrequests to "take me hunting" bout everytime I log on, so this is not a problem. And I got a decent stockpile of stuff, so the 60% rule doesn't bug me much.

Lures will make us more powerful in PvE. We are fairly decent now with the traps we have... IF THEY WOULD FREAKING WORK MORE THAN 50% OF THE TIME.

I looked to see if this was brought up yet, and didn't find it, so please pardon me if it has been suggested before.

I was as livid as anyone that my favorite large solo mobs (torturs, fambaas, giant spats) are now social. Just recently I thought, this is going to suck until we get lures. But wait a second. Didn't GreenMarine say we were going to get lures? If that's the case, this change would make Rangers the only profession that can solo these lairs.

As it is, we grind huge amounts of XP and skill points to get not much in the way of combat. With patience and skill we could (previously) off one tortur at a time using our traps, stealth, warning shots, creature bonuses, etc. But any meathead with a lightning cannon or flamethrower can also just blow away the whole thing and STILL somehow get harvests off the charred corpses.

If the good big mobs are all social, that's going to be very hard to do without a Ranger and his or her lures.

This is assuming that lures are indeed forthcoming. But I know the devs, while not always competent about releasing changes, don't in fact hate us, so it seems a reasonable prospect. Maybe they first want to wean the other classes of hunting with heavy artillery, since it's probably a money fountain and they didn't intend commandos to be game hunters.

One can only hope.

And if thats the case then I'd be willing to appologize for all the bad things I've been thinking about SOE since the change, but only if they appologize for not making their intentions clear via our coorespondent.

Personally, I haven't had to deal with this change yet. Mainly because I haven't been powerful enough to even think of going solo on larger creatures. I still have a hard enough time going solo on durni lairs and such. But, I wasn't too happy to see the change come. I knew I would want to solo larger things in the future, and this seemed to make that thought impossible.

In the original FAQs for the game, they stated that the game was meant for groups and solos alike. Ranger seems to be group only for some reason. If you planned on doing solo, you have to spend twice the SP to get a combat profession to go along with it.

If they make the lures though, I could see that as a major improvement. Not only would we be able to solo them, but we would be in even more demand on the adventure planets for groups that wanted to take on larger mobs. This would be a very good thing.

My only concern now is: If the devs planned this to enhance the need for lures when they make them, why didn't they make the lures to launch at the same time as the massive social changes? This worries me in the fact that they may never introduce lures, and this change is just to make things harder for all of the Uber power-levelers out there.

Yeah but then i had maskscent so i could lure one away, and kill him. Now maskscent breaks and they all come charging.

Oh my, they'll have to rename this game to Star Wars instead of Pet Wars if they do that.

Social creatures can be a blessing...

like JBMat, I cursed a little while taking my first post patch dirt nap. However, I do enjoy a challenge. I can still do some decent solos and still do some amazing group stuff. However, after i noted the changes, out came my darwinian adaptation and now I am doing the same stuff I have always enjoyed doing.....just a little more careful.
