I've seen a lot of threads about traps on Scout forums, but have not seen a lot of talk about them here. I'm interested in feedback on how other Rangers are using the traps Flash Bomb and Sonic Pulse.

I have and still use many traps. I use the Flash Bomb and Sonic pulse when in a large group and we are fighting many enemies. For me they work about 80% of the time, and that is against the big nasties. I have noticed that if I use these solo, that if I affect more than one MOB, all those affected attack me. This can suck. Found this out hunting Grondas with my GSP. Traps are good, they all have a good situation to use them.

It's pretty maddening to know that after going upthe entire trapping tree, that ranger gets a whopping 2, count em, 2! traps. They are good traps, but why would scouts get 12 traps and then, their ELITE profession get 2? It seems paltry. Maybe a better Phecnacine type trap. And for the love of Crom! Make the adhesive mesh do what it's supposed to do! It works for about 0.3 seconds before completely breaking and then you wasted action points and a few seconds you could havespentspamming a special move.

Well we talk about traps here all the time, but really there is not much to talk about. We dont have traps. As was said above, a wapping 2 compared to I think the 10 scouts get. I don't have any problems with the scout traps. The Phecnacine Dart and glow wire are my staple, use them constantly when soloing. I use glow wire, and flash bomb when in groups. The only one I have a little problem with is adhesive mesh, because it doesn't stick long at all. Not even with creatures I fought back as master scout, even less time on bigies.

If you read through the State of the Profession NRaas has up at top, there is a section on traps. Mainly, give us more traps, give us some to throw at NPC humanoids. Additionally it would be nice to be able to experiment on them, so that I can make an adhesive mesh that lasts more then 2 seconds. Some traps that we would like is AE Phecnacine dart and AE adhesive mesh. But those both need to be more effective and last longer then single counterparts. Otherwise no one will use them, because it will be a waiste.

The two we get are only for group situations. They are quite useless if you solo. I would have finished at quite useless, but they do work in a tight mob (if they hit). Best trap is the p-dart...period, second is glow wire. Adhesive mesh's duration is too short, and most of the others are just less effective versions of these. Only exception being the fart bomb...err stink bomb. These are great when you hunt with a TKA or pets.

Basic breakdown:

Flash Bomb + Sonic Pulse = L-dart + Bone Spur + Noise Maker (but works for mobs, and makes cool lights and sounds)

P-dart = sweet

Adhesive Mesh = 1 second of sweet

Glow Wire = Make it hurt

Glow Juice = too cheap to make glow wire

Wire Mesh = Brawlers and pets only

Stink Bomb = Really helps pets and TKAs get their point across (intimidation, poison, etc..)

Think of it this way. We are both drunk standing in the middle of the street. You can pee on a penny. I can turn around in a circle and pee on a bunch of pennies (might miss a few though)

Tonight, I'm gonna test a stink bomb + <insert other trap here> to see if the effects are either better, or hits are more reliable. I'll write a full report in the morning sir.

As a tk I use flash bomb, noise maker, glow wire. I use adhesive mesh when I get adds or need to run. Gives me that extra couple of seconds to live.

I have NO idea what you're saying here Chunky, but was wondering if you finished your test.

Ranger traps suck.

Pdarts and glow wire / juice are good.

Adhesive, ehhhh, why bother, pdarts slow em down enuf to outrun em and last longer as you attack. Plus what is this 2 pack crap? I got tons of poly, but 2 traps per craft, yeah sure right.

The rest of the entire trap line, pretty much useless. I mean, they nerfed sharp bone spurs even.

And to think, traps were the lines I always maxed first...

Traps and their use really depend on what roll the ranger is filling. For starters I never use glow juice or wire mesh traps. I carry enough stuff without overloading myself with traps that I won't use. I do keep some in my house in case a PA member would like them, but the Glow-wire trap is superior.

Solo Ranger = Adhesive Mesh, Glow wire, bone spur + head shots

Ranger with pet = Glow wire, Stink bomb

Ranger with hunting party = Flash bomb + Sonic Pulse. Odds are there will be enough low level rangers to throw the other traps. Because in teh abcense of a squaad leader parties tend to loose focus, you can do the most good for the party by hitting the whole nest at once with your trap. Beside you want to get SOME combat xp out of the hunt.

Im very close to master ranger, and I need to make a decision, whether to keep it, or get something else, say CH or pistoleer. I have just enought skill points to get master ranger and a few more skills into CH, or if I drop ranger traps, then I can get Master CH. Unless there is some reason to keep traps, the equation is, 3 pets and the ability to tame mounts versus Camo kit dathomir, flash bomb, and sonic pulse. I think that ranger is a great accomplishment (im 4434 now), but I can't see myself keeping all of the points tied up with useless trapping.
