Thread: Nraas could you please ask the devs to check the code for conceal yet again?

I am a Bothan master ranger wearing +22 in camo BEgear with a +11 camo skill tape.

This puts me at +115/+148 camo assuming the tape stacks with the camo gear. Even if it does not, I should have +115/+137 camo.

Kreetles, sevortts, and evil settlersbreak my camo often andconsistently. I seem to have much better luck against higher level mobs such as bocatts and mountain squills than I do against these mobs. I am not referring here to the bug where you are attacked without checking for camo, I am referring to getting the message that camo breaks. I realize I am giving my impression here instead of hard numbers but it seems I can run through the middle of a squill lair without camo breaking most of the time, whereas running through a kreetle lair almost inevitably breaks camo.

I think part of the problem may be in the way the game handles the extra mobs. Usually there are several of these low level creatures in a pack as opposed to only 2-3 of the higher level ones. But I have had a single kreetle on my screen break camo as well. I even had it break in the center of Mos Eisley the other day with no aggro npcs/mobs on my screen.

Something is drastically wrong with this skill. I am having the same problems with maskscent (even though this is technically a scout issue, it bears mentioning because the same code seems to apply to both). I would say that +camo not working properly (both this issue and the bug where it is bypassed by some npcs)is my biggest issue with ranger.

I will have to agree on this one. I have Kreetles break Camo and Mask Scent more often than it works, in fact, and I am not exagerating here, I will avoid Kreetles and other low level mobs because they break my camo nearly every time.

My Mask Scent skill and Camo skill are both at +100/+148.

I can walk up to Grauls and Rancors and pet them, even given a kiss to several , but it just bugs me that something I can kill just by looking at it right can break my camo.

That is all, rant over.

Perhaps the skill mod is 'rolling over'. BTW, according to BE's only +25 applies no matter how much skill mods you have.

No, it isn't a roll-over. I had this same problem with low CL creatures (howling plumed rasps are my mortal enemies) before and after having +maskscent/camo gear.

Anyone else wish to chime in on this conversation?

As for myself, I have not had much problem with /conceal...

  • Applied to my companion, it only falls due to creatures 2-3 times a session (2 hour period).

  • Wehadbeen hunting on Endor last week, so I can say we did run into numerous aggressives.

As for /maskscent, I can say that it does drop more frequently than my companion's concealment, but that is to be expected considering it has a low success rate.

However, Ido not usually mix with the low level creatures nowadays, staying to the larger and less numerous big creatures.

  • So I can not say for sure whether the increased number of checks incurred by the more frequently occurring low level critters would impact my success rate.

This was a problem before adding the +camo gear. The camo gear does not seem to change it's frequency in any way. I had been hoping that it would help :/

Also, I applied camo to a friend today, who had it broken by a kreetle.

"I applied camo to a friend today, who had it broken by a kreetle."

Even with the most simplest of low level creatures there is still a 2% chance of failure.

  • Inprobability, each of those2% chances add up to being a good chance of being revealed.

When I put the kit onto a friend it next to never breaks... when applied to myself it breaks consistently. I have honestly given up using conceal on myself, opting instead to just maskscent myself and save my kits for friends.

I have always said my ms/conceal breaks far more often then makes sense, so much so I stop using it out of tediousness (is that even a real word?). Durnis, Gubbers, HPR (as stated earlier) and mid levels like Tabbage and Violent Krahbu. In fact, pretty much high level too. I suspect now that it has something to do with Rifleman but I can't quite commit to that. I do know that using cover is the last thing I want to do until I get sneak.

Last night I was on Dathomir, I ran from the south outpost to the north one with maskscent on. It wore off once. I ran back to the south outpost (slightly altered course, as to not run past the same mobs)and had maskscent break with every mob.

Only once did this result in combat (with a rancor youth), but odd how running one direction I have no problems, and the other direction I get spotted by every animal.

I've not started using camo so I can't comment on it, but ifit and maskscentdraw off the same skill mod I would think the same would be true for it.

I still use maskscent from time to time, but only to stop something from stalking me. It seems to work. I use conceal on other people in my group for the same thing. But it's easier, faster, less costly, and safer to just avoid aggros by distance rather than relying on an inconsistent and ever-changing skill. I'm a Bothan with no skill enhancers as of yet, but from talking with other rangers who do have themthe bonuses don't seem to help. My maskscent is +100 and camouflage is +115. I can't say that I see much difference in them, but I haven't sat down and done controlled tests to see.

From my own experience, conceal isn't worth it. It's an elite skill and the percentage chance that a low-level critter likethe kreetleis able to break +115 concealment should be next to nil.It should be a rare moment. It isn't. For me it happened multiple times per day to the point that I don't even bother when running out of town with it up, I generally wait until I'm out and about. Even then, it's almost guaranteed to drop on any large group of critters, regardless of the level. And I must have really bad luck with NPC's because I routinely get plinked (for example) by Valarians from outside 60m with concealment up. It seems they completely ignore my concealment.

My litmus test will be when the patch goes in that lets concealment stay even during combat. I intend on using it a lot then, just because. If people again start asking me tonot conceal them, I will know something is wrong.

I'll chip in on this and say that there does certainly seem to be some inconsistency with the success/failure rates of maskscent and conceal. It seems that at times it will break at every opportunity yet at others I can run through fields of reds at will.

I was going to agree with the original posters sentiments that kreetles (and some other low level mobs) seem to break maskscent more often than not, but since reading more of the replies I'm intrigued by the "North/South" idea. It's something I'll try to take note of in the future when maskscent starts breaking more often than feels right.

I'll admit that at first the idea of direction affecting anything like this seems somewhat far fetched. That said, I also came across similar claims when reading through the test centre bug threads concerning mounts. A number of people claimed that the rubberbanding when crossing rivers seemed to occurfrequently when travelling in a certain direction and almost never when going the opposite way.

That said, generally I love the way maskscent and conceal work now. I can walk through dungeons at will with little or no chance of drawing aggro, my biggest achievement to date being the rancor cave on Dathomir. Try it, it rocks!
