Thread: NRaas: A suggestion for Maskscent
LOL I have to agree with the sentiments of this post. Lie prone, get within firing range and off they trot!
It makes sense that the servers aren't clogged by running AI routines when there's no-one around, but it'd be real nice if the developers could extend that ever so slighty to alleviate this patricular problem. It'd only need to be a couple of metres extra (70 at max) but it'd be so nice if mobs would "react" before you get into firing range!
Just a thought

I know just the person you shouldtalk to about this... KStarfire, the General IssueCorrespondent.
- You should make sure he is aware of this "feature".

That's cool, Nraas. Haven't checked out who new correspondants are, nice to know we've got someone on board for general issues now.
I'll take your advice, thanks. ![]()
You sit down in the wilderness at 65+ meters away from some critter. You stay there for a while. Maybe you're getting camping XP. Maybe you're recovering from being incapped. Maybe you're healing damage. Whatever.
And you sit there for a long time, at 65+ meters away from a nice, fat, juicy critter. And you watch the critter. And he just stands there or sits there in one spot and doesn't move.
And finally, you're ready to make your move. You move in for the kill. Maybe you're standing up and you run towards the critter. Maybe you're prone and you creep up on the critter.
And just as you get within 64m of the critter, he gets up and starts wandering around.
I cannot count the times I've had this happen. I've sat there at 70m away from a critter for 20 minutes or more while I looked stuff up on the Internet or updated the Tempest Resource Webpage, and I have watched a critter stand stock still for the entire 20 minutes -- only to get up and start moving away from me as soon as I get within 64m.
This is SO FREAKIN' ANNOYING I can't stand it.
If Maskscent means that aggressive creatures can't tell we're there (and thus won't attack us), doesn't it stand to reason that it would also keep critters from being spooked by our presence when we get to within 64m?
"And just as you get within 64m of the critter, he gets up and starts wandering around."
To reduce the load on the server, NPCs that have spawned but are not within a certain distance of a player do not seem to be given anycycles inthe A.I. system.
- Meaning, the effect you are seeing is the server has decided you are close enough to the creature to start using valuable CPU time on makingthe creature do something.
You can wait forever, but if the server doesn't want to spend any energy moving the creature, it won't. ![]()
