Thread: What is the point of bieng a ranger?
Dromare said: I was just wondering what is the point of beinga ranger I dont know what you guys do but what is fun about running around looking at trees?
Well as a Tatooine Ranger, my fun is running around looking FOR trees ! lol
If you stand out in the far desert, during a raging sandstorm for long enough, you can eventually see the trees, rivers, and you canfish in the ocean and talk to the mermaids. <giggle, crazy laugh, drool>
(Sorry, I have sand in my mind pool.)
(Actually, there are sometrees on Tatoonie and you can fish there too. Yes, really)
I believe that what I have said may have been misunderstood by a large number of the community in my previous post. I indeed said that (in my opinion) Rangers are a support class at best, and I qualify my remarks by the following:
1.) People don't look to Rangers without weapon skills to do high amounts of damage in groups for PvP, and thus far for PvE. Now, suppose that Ranger had quite a bit of, let's say, Rifle skills. The Ranger may be able to dish out plenty of damage, but it isn't his/her Ranger skills that contribute to the damage dealt. It is the other "pure combat" skill that he/she has practiced. However, what peoplecounton Rangers for, is to provide Combat support via traps, camps, tracking, etc.So while yes, I believe that most Rangers utilize a "pure combat" skill to advance in the Ranger tree, they can always drop their "pure combat" skills later on down the line while retaining the Ranger branch.
2.) It is a well documented fact that Rangers, in the sense of having no "pure combat" skills by itself, were never made to excel in PvP. This can also be said about alot of other classes. My perspective being, that the Ranger classpossess special talents to make up for this lack of PvP power. It comes in the form of hunting and harvesting biological resources. This in turn enables other "support" professions to better support the "pure combat" community with their goods and services.
3.) I am at fault for not further clarifying my opinions in my previous post, and for that I apologize. However, please understand that there are several newer players that may happen across this post, and I don't want them to discount the Ranger class without ever trying the profession out for themselves. The happy-go-lucky positive side of my post was meant to appeal to them, and inspire them to give the Ranger tree a shot (flaws and all).
4.) I do agree that there is alot missing from our Profession. I enjoy reading these boards and find alot of refreshing ideas that I am excited to see implemented (hopefully).

Point taken about damage. However, I think you are making a huge assumption on what constitutes combat in this game. Merely being aggro will not give you combat experience. You must do damage before the creature is killed. You can throw debuff traps at leviasqualls all day as they are painfully slow and will never catch up to a scout (trap kiting). You will get plenty of trapping experience but you won't get combat experience unless you whip out a weapon and kill it. It's really the only point I was trying to make.

Once you land a trap on a creature, you have initiated combat as far as the system is concerned. At that point you fight, run or get incapped.

I agree with your last post.
I think we need to have a big boost to our PvE skills with reguard to hunting. I my opinion Rangers should be the best at hunting animals, most of our skills point to that and one of titles is Hunt Master.
Yes, we use different class sets to do our hunting damage with but our very Rangerness as a Hunt Master should give us vastly more damage to creatures than we do now with our meager "To hit Creature" bonuses.
This should apply to creatures both in PvE and PvP but not to players in PvP or NPC's in PvE. A Ranger in PvP would be the best at killing Beast Masters critters but not a threat to the "people" killing classes.
As I have said many times, Rangers should be the BEST at HUNTING and KILLING Critters and not the best at killing NPC's and players. Any skill that a Ranger should have at killing Players or NPC's should come from his other classes combat skills.
We should have a big damage bonus to creatures in addition to a increase in our "To hit Creature" Bonus. A Ranger should know the weak spots of a animal better than a Commando, BH or other. This could be translated in a group to provide some sort of creature bonus when a Ranger is in the group, this would have to be done with steppingon Squad Leaders toes though.
The skill points should be modified so the biggest and baddest creature killing abilites, and they should be pretty powerful, come at the Master Ranger skill, and the points left over should be enough to master a weapon line, like Rifleman, Carbineer, Pistoleer, Brawler etc but not enough to become a Master Bounty Hunter, Master Commando. You should not be Master at Killing both NPC's and Creatures.
This combined with fixed and new traps as well as the other improvements we need would make a Master Ranger a great profession yet not overpowered.
Personally, I would not even mind taking some negative bonuses in combat with players and NPC's to gain the big creature bonuses I am talking about.

Maybe I am missing something here but why a smuggler?
Which brings us back to my point: Rangers are a combat profession, just a bad one that needs repair.
I was a mid level creature handler whenI started using traps. My "exploit" (not really an exploit)was called a graul mauler. Stick him in front of something tough and throw traps tillit dies. You get alotof trapping exp.

I shouldn't have used the word exploit as neither of these are exploits. I just aimed the remark at the generic ranger who often ask here how to get trapping experience. I assume most CH/rangers already knowyourtrick but who knows. ![]()
DFH: I tried again last night and have a hard time verifying getting combat experience with traps. I'll take your word for it. My guess is that if we get combat experience for traps, it is similar to the combat experience medics get for healing. /shrug
