And overall, I am willing to go along that direct military type combat is not our specialty - in which case, we should be as effective against creatures as BH's are against Players and NPCs. Just as we take a backseat role in PvP, when the creatures start to swarm, we should be able to take the front line.

I think we pretty much all totally agree with this statement. I used to think , "hey why should be so much different then other classes, and why should we be WAY better killing critters." Well when you think about it, the BH has their specialty, Killing in general. But more specifically, killing NPC and players in PvP. The commando has their specialty, taking down large equipment, or large groups and dealing damage in a large area.

So with that in mind, is it so bad that the Ranger is the ultimate animal hunter? why not? If you want to rock in PvP you have to be either BH or commando. Everyone agrees with that. And in our secret poll NRaas discovered that the majority of Rangers want to be PvE based. Sooooo, make us the masters of killing animals. Give us some serious to hit AND damage bonuses on animals. Give us some serious traps that actually do something to level 30 and up creatures. Maybe give us that ranger only weapon we keep talking about, but it's animals only.

OHHHHH a new idea, for me anyway. What if we are able to craft special "amunition types" for animals only. The idea is, instead of a new weapon for us, these act like power ups, that can go on any weapon. They are crafted by us with resources we can gather, and have to be planet specific like camo kits. When you craft one and put it on your blaster, it will now greatly increase the damage it deals, TO ANIMALS ONLY. Until it burns out. Then you drop another one on your weapon. Put them in the ranger Trapping line (to give it something to make it cool). And you gain the abilit to make them per planet in the same way rate that camo kits are accuired.

I agree with the above....why not bring out that crafty Ranger when the opposition starts throwing their pets around...levels the playing field a bit.

Nice point Treb...

"Anti-Pet" should be an optional title you get for mastering the Ranger profession.

"What about simply applying a severely negative to-hit modifier if the other player can't break the Ranger's /conceal, with it automatically breaking, of course, when the Ranger takes damage."

Now that is a sweet idea"

if they're not going to let us disappear off the radar then this is a REALLY REALLY good way to impliment the the same relative effect of being "camoflaged"

there is still a part of me though that wouldn't want the /conseal to drop totally .. only for the person who actually hit you would the camoflage drop.

I echo the "sever negative to hit modifiers" bit though .. in theory you could double/tripple the camoflage skill you have and add it to your dodge or what ever the stat is that stops you being hit..

what would people think is a reasonable ratio of being hit when under conceal, one in six ? one in eight ? one in 10 ?

more ?

ohh and NRaas kudos to you. your state of the profession list is master class stuff, it's so orgainised and readable it give me goosebumps everytime I read it.

How about letting Master Rangers deathblow pets....permanently? Maybe I'm asking too much.

Takei, you're right I totally like this idea also. Would be a good way to implement our camo to PvP. I would say something like just add the camo skill to dodge. That way, as you progress up in Frontiering, you're camo skill goes up, and so does your dodge skill "while camoflauged". If adding the straight camo skill is to high, the how about half of the camo skill gets added to dodge. So if your camo is 50, then when using a camo kit your dodge gets an additional 25.

A permanent DB would be too much.Something to take a large chunk out of vitality would probaby be a bit more feasable.

As a RPer who took up scout and now ranger for the foraging skill (its a long story...don't ask), I am still waiting for them to make good on not an addition, but on something stated right in the foraging description: a chance for a rare item to be found. Note, I'm not looking for holocrons under cabage leaves. I would simply like to see foraged special plants that give buffs equal to say spice, or at the highest levels, of ranger, equal to doctors. Or even odd-ball items dropped in the wilderness or having fallen off passing ships...what have you. But opposed to the "give me more", I simply want what they have not only promised, but put in the skill tree description.

Just thought I would chime in again after catching up on this great thread.

On "Ranger Combat" I am a little in the other camp on the combat side. In general fantasy/gaming genre, Rangers have had some combat specialty, though never as good as dedicated figherts. I really think there should be some combat add for Ranger (though nothing as heavy as BH by any means). We should get some modifiers somewhere that affects both creatures and humanoids...it just make sense (well to me anyway ). Someone mentioned BH in comparison to Ranger, being Humanid hunters versus creature hunters. I want to point out a BH can use all their specials on creatures (I hunt with a BH and watching them crank with a lightning canon or repeated eye shots...wow).

Minmally...the creature to hit should apply to hitNPC or creature(and inmelee)and we should get at least one trap that effects NPC's. I also find Rescue rather useless (at least I get killed instead of my companions when I use it...hehe) and would love to see that replaced with some kind of interesting special offensive move. In summary, give Rangers justa little more combat advantage (I am talking generally PvE here) espeically since the prereq's (Master Scout) are so high in skill point costs.

On special ranger weapon..I am all for that too as I noted before. A "composite bow" just feels too fantasy and not enough sci-fi ish for me (and what about our melee lovers)..but there is the bowcaster, so there is sort of precident. I would prefer a special rangerrifle (or special rifle damage bonuses)and a special melee weapon sword/axe(or say extraaxe damagebonus) to accomdate ranged or melee.

On camo in PvP or versus other players. I am an old UO player and UO had integrated a hide and stealth skill set which worked well in PvE and PvP. This precedent shows that it can work well in a balanced MMRPG. It would be a nice add as others have mentioned.

Lastly, I had a new idea (I hope new as I don't think I saw it yet). Again this is a UO carry over that just popped into my head. Rangers should be able to construct "mounted trophy heads" which could bedisplayedin one'shouse. This could be a radial menu option under harvest on about any creature (ie no resources but you make a cool trophy to hang in your house; give it a high failure rate to keep them rare if you want). Why just limit it to fish trophys? Just a thought.

And finally I want to give a thanks to the Dev's who made /conceal and /maskscent once again not "turn off" during combat (it breaks for the creature that spots you but stays in effect until it expires). At first I thought this a goof, but it has stayed through many patches since mounts, and it is much appreciated.

I am for a special ranger weapon, but I'd prefer to see some sort of damge bonus added in its place. Some of us have already mastered another weapon class and adding this could potentially make that worthless to us. If they were to add a weapon to our class such as a bow I'd like to see Ranger just take you through some basic skills like the marksman tree (making you decent with the weapon but not great), with an elite-elite class added to make you more lethal with this special weapon.

example: add it to trapping or camping (since a bow is a survival tool afterall), and give moderate attack and speed bonuses with some little special moves like bleed and the such. Then add a class called the Archer that requires that you master the Ranger profession. The Archer would further advance his combat skills, while gaining some moderate, but worthwhile additions to the Ranger class.

As an addition, I discovered tonight that I'm unable to harvest organics from my kills while Rallied by a Squad Leader. I assume this is a bug, and is more annoying than damaging... but its there.
