well, master brawler is currently preventing me from mastering ranger(i do need the +5 to polearm speed). i am master pike, master brawler, and 2040 ranger. i can dish out the damage, but i certainly take lots. after a night of hunting, my BF always exceeds 200 and i have a few hundred wounds that need tending to. pikeman is definitely the coolest combat profession i've done. i've done pistoleer, carbineer, tka, fencer, bh, swordsman. the area attacks made polearms one of the fastest professions i've mastered. anyways, here's a few screenies of my pikeman in action...

My hybrid character is designed to be a "Roleplayer's Bounty Hunter"
-Novice Bounty Hunter with Carbine Tree enhanced with the last 2 trees of Carbineer (a bounty hunter should be reasonably proficient with at least one weapon... I chose carbines)
-Novice Ranger with Player Track and Conceal (the ability to sneak up on someone you are trying to track down is a must for the hunters of the galaxy)
-Novice Creature Handler with level 3 of the last tree (I have a nearly perfect battledroid as a "partner", and I enter battle with an exploding droid... first strike can make or break ya in a battle)
I am contracted to the Rebellion to take out the Empire (and I'll even do it for fun)... my favorite "dirty little trick" would be to set up a series (3?) of faction scanners as a "net" on a path that is known to be travelled by my prey and bring them overt. After that, it is up to my skills as a warrior. Here's the thing though... I've never actually implemented this on a player (I'm not entirely sure if it is "legal") I've been brought overt travelling by a faction base and killed by NPC's, so I really can't see why I shouldn't be able to... other than the fact that I am actively hunting a player with the goal of sending them to the cloning center, whether they want to enter PvP or not
I'm nearly positive that someone will disagree with this tactic, but consider this... bounty hunters aren't necessarily the nost noble of people to begin with. Faction bases do the same thing, but mine is portable /evilgrin Add in a shifting faction alignment (keep your faction points at over 200 per side and switch from side ot side depending on who is contracting you to "eliminate" another player)and you have a business model even Boba Fett can appreciate.
I would be VERY interested to hear what the devs/CSRs think of this tactic... for legal reasons. I don't want my character deleted for "unfair play" or some other non-sence.

Just curious. Has anyone tried a Ranger/Carbineer build?
*Raises his hand*
Yeah, I'm a Master Ranger (off and on to try various things out until they actually fix us) and a 2-4-2-2 Carbineer. I'm planning on finishing up with Master Ranger, Master Carbineer, andthe third skill box in one of the Creature Handler trees (I haven't really looked at them tooclosely yet).
Pros:
- Lots of damage with /cripplingShot
- Close enough to critters to kill and harvest quickly but far enough for a head start if I have to run (though that usually doesn't do much good)
- Variety of damage types with the different carbines to pick on vulnerabilities
- Dizzy and knockdown effects work well against NPCs
- Fairly quick weapon speeds
- A variety of AOE attacks
- Good counterattack and defense mods
- Ranged damage mitigation 2
Cons:
- Huge action usage between specials and traps
- Bad combination for a Zabrak (low action secondary max stats)
- No meleedamage mitigation
- Probably others I can't think of right now
Overall I like it, but then I haven't tried any of the other combat professions, so I don't have much to compare it to. I was once a Master Squad Leader and a 1-4-4-4 Ranger and I didn't like that combo so much, mostly because I don't group very often. I only went to Master SL for my first holo. It may be a lot different after the SL revamp, but I've since dropped the whole SL profession.
As mentioned above, the biggest drawback is the high action use by every single carbine special. When I hunt the big stuff, I have to keep buffed with food and/or spice and I always keep my combat droid between myself and the creature. I need to find a good vendor for action powerups though, that's for sure.

You should be fine doing this as long as you don't keep killing the same person over and over again (i.e. griefing). Doing it once is just using what the Devs have in game for an interesting purpose (although you are probably best only hunting targets that have agreed at some level to be hunted--don't take random contracts for people who might not appreciate it, if only to avoid the harrassing tells). This tactic is not much different (at least as far as game rules go) than travelling to faction bases and killing the faction farmers. It is just a lot more inventive.

Working towards: Master Ranger / Master Swordsman currently (2-2-3-3 Ranger / 3-4-4-3 Swordsman)
Requires: Master Scout / Brawler 0-0-4-0 currently ( Master Scout / Brawler 3-0-4-0)
This was not intended as a "template", morea matter of picking up some professions that appealed to me: Ranger and Swordsman.
What Swordsman offers the Ranger is a powerful tanking and solo ability in combat with creatures. The melee mitigation, two-handed toughness, and the sheer damage-dealing capacity of the Swordsman means that one with moderate armor and generally without relying on buffs can hunt successfully and for long periods without any external support. With buffs and careful food management, one merely hunts faster and tackles much larger prey with a very high survivabilty. Where Ranger has helps the Swordsman primarily are the traps and camps. Without buffs, the use of a camp merely accelerates the healing process, reducing downtime and also keeping the wounds accrued to a manageable level. Glow-wire and Flash-bang traps are enormously useful to the Swordsman. Particularly the flash-bangs, being a source of blind that can affect several creatures at once, key when being swarmed.
The weaknesses of this template come in facing NPCs. The lack of ranged defenses put one at a disadvantage against any blaster-toting baddie. This danger has become extreme in the face of NPCs using special attacks once again. As someone who enjoys exploring the quests and faction missions, this deficiency can be felt pretty strongly. While the tracking has been enormously useful in keeping tabs on quest-important NPCs, my intention is to master ranger, and then release skills such that some TKA can be picked up for improved defenses and/or Master Brawler, for the benefits to the Swordsman aspect of the character (+5 two-handed speed, Intimidate2 and two-handed-lunge-2)

Well I know its kinda dull but I've been thinkin about takin my alt MR/MR/CH and going MR/TKM...
Fromthe speed perspectiveit makes the huntin that the guild is always naggin me to do for them go a lot faster than with rifles. I mean, I've spend a good part of the past week huntin avian on yavin (150cpu on sunrunner right now) and runnin around cleanin up the mess that was formerly birds is a pain in the butt... not to mention with meditate really cuts out the down time...
Just walk in spin attack the lair, then let em pop out while you poke em one by one... as opposed to shoot them one by one at about 60mand go and find their bodies scttered all overafterwards... and god forbid you like to have the flora on high on yavin for visual effect like I do... you'll lose half the stinkin bodies lol
Unfortunately from the RP perspective I'm not too impressed with the idea... *sigh*
Coolness or Speed...
Oh... and it'll give me a chance to use traps too... which is cool cause with rifles they dont normally get a chance to get anywhere near me till I'm dead
It does kinda have a cool monk livin off the land kinda feel... now if only I wasnt so addicted to buffs I'd be able to almost never go back to civilization

Using a harvesting droid solved all those problems for me. So now I have a creature targeted, send pettanking, I'm shooting with the rifle, it goes down, I press the macro to have the droid go harvest it, tab to the next creature and repeat. This way you don't have to find any bodies, you get a ton of harvest and you're still 'flavorful'.
It's been working for me anyways.

Springbok: I hope you are full yprepared to drop med. Med was also th elast thin gI dropped before fully mastering the stick. It will help once you have completely dropped TKA to pick up medic 0/1/0/0. That way your can heal your own wounds faster and heal your damage since the defense from Pikes is horrible.
Right now mt template stand as Master p[ikes....Ranger 4/2/4/4 and medic 0/1/0/0, it is good and I tanked a krayt the other day for a while. Just make sure you have a doc with you or a master medic if you go on th elong hunts, so they can heal poison/disease.

I just started on Ranger so right now I'm scout 4/2/4/2.
Eventual template is gonna be
Master Ranger
Master Swordsman
CH 0/0/3/0
Gives me a CL of 18 so no GSP's(sigh) but I'd like to have the group command, in case for whatever reason I'm hunting on my own and need a boost in overall mission difficulty. This also gives me a +105 bonus to harvesting from creatures so... unless you cap at 100, that's going to be good.
