"Finally, the devs don't have enough hours in the day to respond to every crackpot proposal that comes down the pike on these forums. If you have been paying attention you'll notice that most threads of this nature draw no offical response at all. If you're expecting a dev to come along and give you an opinion on this, I suggest you have a seat and find a good book. The The Mythical Man Month by Fred Brooks would be a good start."
I am well aware of the time they say they have available, however you're taking this issue to task and calling it a non-starter is irritating at the minimum. We have great people playing Rangers and in these Forums and when someone takes the time to come up with a unique and original idea I think we should be supportive. Constructive criticism is great up to a certain point. I am no programmer, so No Silver Bullet is not going to make any sense to me, but others in this thread see it as being a feasible idea so it must have some merit.

In my work as a programmer I had to make changes to existing databases and the programs accessing them and it can get ugly. A lot of the time the existing database structure cannot support a more dynamic type of data and it has to be reworked fromt he groud up. Therefore it is often way better to find a less intrusive solution that accomplishes a similar goal.
From what I read on the forums, the reference resource database (the one with all the stats for a particular resource) is very static and only adds/removes items on server resets. Therefore any solution that tries to dynamically modify this is bound to get messy.
On the other hand the crafting process already supports the creation of components with different stats. Therefore it would be trivial to add new components made from hides, meat or bones exclusively. The issue would be for the recipes requiring the organics to be able to accept the 'tanned leathery hide' rather than standard 'leathery hide' and then process them accordingly into the finished product. However, this would most likely just entail UI and surface bussiness logic chages with minimal database impact.
