Game wardens could be considered a Ranger, yes, but a particularly focused one.
Thing is here that people are not separating the specific from the generic, and using rl or fictional examples to show their point of view. Problem is that for each specific instance, a counter can be provided.
Ranger was a generic title given to wilderness experts who ranged far from home. Some elite combat units, the US Army Ranger, for example, just happened to be given that name, as that was the kind of skillset they requred.
As an aside, it's interesting to note that the classic representation of ranger in fiction, Lord of the Rings, was written in the late 1930's (ie, before the US Army Ranger) and the Star Wars (as is a lot of modernSci-Fi/Fantasy)is highly derivative of Lord of the Rings. I believe that Ranger in these contexts, refers less to the skill of the person involved, and more to the honour of the people chosen. These are supposed to be not only elite troops, butpossesed of the finest moral standards.
So anyway - for me, Ranger should refer to a wilderness-centric skillset, which can support the playstyle of both creature-centric (hunter) and npc/player-centric (paramilitary) factions. Or both.
Personally I feel that the Special Forces type ranger mooted belongs more to Commando, even if some of the skillset would be very suitable for a generic Ranger capable of both hunter and paramilitary roles. (but then, maybe the Devs have a particular Heavy Weapons specialist type role in mind for future revamps for commando...)
I win!
I believe that the "big-picture" roles are going something along these lines; keep in mind that there is absolutely no basis in fact here, as it's just my opinion and guesswork.
Rangers are filling the role of light infantry/recon; locate the enemy, harass the enemy. Stealth is a primary attribute, because toe-to-toe, they'll end up cooling meat. But if they get the surprise, the enemy is going to have serious issues.
Commandos are the heavy infantry, the Unstoppable Force. Come in with the heavy weapons and annhiliate the enemy with overwheming firepower. They use the heaviest weapons around, and should make any opponent lose bowel control when they see them coming.
Squad Leaders are the glue that holds it together-masters of group tactics and small unit actions. Their leadership allows their unit's strengths to hit the enemy's weaknesses, while minimizing their own weaknesses by crippling the enemy's strengths.
Obviously, there are some issues around; Commando's really need to be beefed up a bit to fit that idea. The SL's are in the midst of their revamp, and the Rangers are possibly on-deck. But I can easily see these three professions starting to work pretty closely together in the GCW.

Some posters are REALLY starting to irritate me on this new change. "The hunting stuff is going to scout. Ranger is military now. Go scout if you want to hunt." type posts are ticking me off 100%. You are basically saying "Well, we're taking away everything about this profession and giving it to another. Who cares that you played it this way for 2+ years, move to the other profession."
Its like dropping jedi skills into the FS trees and saying 'Adjust.' Its ignorant and disrespectful of anyone to tell someone to like it or get over it when everything they loved about a profession is taken away, given to other professions, and a new pvp spirited profession put in its place. You should know better, but you don't because you are one of those FOTM, want-to-be-uber, more concerned about skills and loot rather than content, pvp twits.
Devs turned ranger away from content and gave us a violent kick in the back end towards pvp and people want us to take it with a smile. New flash, jedi grinding and pvp is not what drives everyone in this game. And many of the non-jedi grinding, non-pvp people WERE in the ranger community.

You are NOT being forced into PvP. It is just a much more viable option now. PvE is still the core of this game.
Yup Everything that is outdoorsy from ranger goes to Scout, so if you are a Ranger now, how exactly do you lose it as you have to be a master scout.
The devs ahve not turned us away from content, they have turned us TOWARDS content. We will be even better stealthy hunters of critters, but we wont be RESTRICTED to this content, we can now actually participate in PvNPC content and PvP content if we want.
We have played this restricted Lord of the Rings fantasy style Ranger for more than 2 years BECAUSE the devs havent given us a STAR WARS Ranger. Now they have given us what the majority of people want, a creature hunter who is adaptable to ANY environment, who has traps superior to scout and who is also a paramilitary expert as rangers in star wars (not fantasy) are.
I would never say to anyone they should just play as a scout if they want to be a fantasy style of ranger, I would say to them, go play a fantasy game! It says it on the box - STAR WARS, and finally, after the devs having no idea of what a SW ranger is and pigeonholing us into a fantasy ranger type in a star wars universe, we have finally become rangers in the star wars mould. (If you actually have read some of the original rough drafts George Lucas made for his star wars screenplays, he actually mentions rangers in them- hows that for SW canon!)
Ill just have to assume that l337 was your password or something that somehow got mixed up in this sentence, but the rest of it I understand well enough. Ive been around for a long time now, and Ive been on one side of the debate for most of that time, so I am not at all troubled by the new direction that RANGER is taking. This is an addressing of our skills so that we can do with them what we please, not be restricted for all intents and purposes into doing what the profession dictates us to do.
Being a RANGER will not stop you from hunting creatures in much the same way that being a Master Carbineer does not stop you. Id even go so far as to say that a majority of the people who were interesting in solely harvesting organics have long ago dropped master ranger or even most of ranger in favor of master scout or 0040 scout because it was simply inefficient to have all those points tied up in being able to do only one thing. They found they could harvest more efficiently by combining with medic, more weapons skills and still harvest insane amounts because of the high CL of the creatures harvested. The CU made the harvesting of organics a viable option for scouts and Ranger-as-hunter lost its purpose at that moment. We needed a new purpose and RECON is it.
Keep the title RANGER, as it is highly appropriate to the idea of RECON.
I'm thinking I need a Green Beret.
