The only situation you will get someone laughing at a BH is a jedi claiming alpha classes are all good.
BH has a great skill set and this has just got better (increased duelist stance by +100 defense). Rifleman is all good but only very powerfull when using cc specials. BH on the other hand has a great set up of offense/defense/cc.

Its all down to the emphasis on full combat templates now. Before we could get away with just being a rifleman, now it isnt, we are at a disadvantage being a single combat class as ranger doesnt provide anything worthwhile in that regard.
The CU sorted a lot of things out but ever since Tyrant left the CU went off in this strange direction. Before the CU planets were filled with creatures that had various toughness and danger levels and actually made up a half realistic ecosystem. What i mean by that is you didnt go to a planet and hunt a level, you went to a planet to find a specific creature or npc that through past experience you knew was tough or easy. That was more immersive.
Yea I miss that too, thats right there is what made creature knowledge as a skill worthwhile, now its simply obsolete as a skill, and something needs to come in as a replacement. I do grudgingly see the develoeprs point in simplifying things the way they have, with the immersiveness came a LOT of complexity that players simply did nto understand and in the end, SOE could not manage the expectations. It came down to a choice of " its simpler, andworks for the most part, or its complex and we cant tell if it works or how its supposed to work"
I dont like the fact you can use any special with any weapon, it diluted the whole profession idea and instead just made you a generic template. Before i was a ranger rifleman, now im a ranger weapons user and i dont like that. I dont like the fact i can fire my pistol specials with my rifles, i dont like the fact i can sniper with my pistols. Anyway, the point i was making is that only having one profession in your template count towards combat speeds, accuracies and defenses is bad. Thats the situation we are in atm
That is the down side of acheiving 'Balance'. It means we all become more similar to each other in various ways. The SWG players themselves proved that this was a necessary evil to undertake by the way they flocked to any template considered 'ultimate'.
SWG players create imbalance themselves by flocking to whatever template is considered 'ultimate' and the point of the CU is to make no one template 'ultimate'. In the end it means adding more checks and balances so that for every advantage there is a corresponding disadvantage (JTL ship crafting is a very good example of this process)
The problem as I see it is no one profession can have more adavantges than another (excluding Jedi) and the players themselves will scream bloody murder if someother profession has something they dont. Rangers are already hearing moaning about P-Darts and Krayts, and the profession is attracting respecs who care nothing of the 'lifestlye', they just want to solo pearl drops.
Of course the big problem for Ranger is it was NOT included in the CU balancing effort exceptto use Ranger for computing the Combat Level. This is a bigger problem for us, because SOE does NOT see us as a combat profession and thus we have no place in the CU, and no one seems to be establish just where a Ranger should fit in regards to balance with the other Professions even if they did change their minds.
Bit in Red.
As i have pointed out before - look at the CU profession schematic and you will see that there is a spot with no profession filling that role. It is a tanking mezzer. That sounds like the perfect combat role for a tough old ranger chucking stat applying traps to me. We should be aiming to fit ourselves into this whole rather than trying to find a role for us that is already filled by another profession.

A tanking/mezzer would fit perfectly with my personal take on how ranger should be. Obviously there are other opinions and they are no less important than mine but thats how i would like to see ranger go. good defensive stats with very high CC through mezzs, roots, snares and debuffs. A survivalist in other words.

I have no intention of hunting Krayts. I'm grinding my way up through scout and ranger, taking my sweet time, experimenting with traps and combinations, milking everyhing that I can, learning my way around the different planets, setting up camps whenever I take breaks or rests because that's what you're supposed to do. I love these 2 professions (scout/ranger).
