Part of the reason we don't have a weapon, I think, is because we lack a base in the core combats. We don't have Marksman or Brawler in our build and thus we do not get a weapon certification.
At the onset, when Ranger and Scout were in early development, I'd assume our Combat role was much more prominent in the minds of developers. This is why traps exist and why, I think, trapping had originally been part of the BH base.
We do have a series of weapons. Traps.
They cert just like weapons, they have bonuses that are applied through a type of accuracy system (the trapping mod) and they are intended for combat. As Commandos got grenades, so too were we to get traps.
Sad thing is that traps never developed into what they should have been. They were published in a broken form that was barely usefull once a player ventured beyond 100m surrounding any starter town.
Asking for a Bow, Scout Pistol, Hunting Knife or any other such weapon is great. Unfortunately its probably somewhat unrealistic. Without a base requirement in the "core combat" professions a weapon cert would be difficult to justify. Similarly, we'd need a weapon that was completely independant of Ranged or Melee restrictions such that it would be useful to any build. From a development perspective, why go through all that when traps hold the potential and already have a basic foundation in place.
Owen's suggestion for "arrow heads" of various uses is a good one. I'd simply suggest we stick to our roots and ask to see those powers and functions applied to our traps.
Realistically, I think we're more apt to get revamped skillsratherthan all new certs. I see the Trap line becoming more versatile and promising in both PvP and PvE as a solid alternative to creating a whole new weapon type, skill set, and skill mods.

My two cents...Rangersreally shouldn'tever have a weapon becuase we can easily pick up any combat skill we want (even Commando, if weare willingto not master either that or Ranger). As people have pointed out before, we have a form of weapon already, traps.

Agreed, and well put.. All the benefits of "ranger weapons" can be carried over to traps.

Long time wannabe Ranger here (hopefully soon to be). Before I throw in my two cents, I just wanted to say thanks to all who make the Ranger forums what they are - fun and intelligent posts that have kept me coming back for more since the beginning.
I would have to agree that we need to concentrate on traps as our main "weapon". A new weapon would be a nice addition, but I think it would serve more as a "coolness" factor than actual usefulness. To me, traps just have more potential.
Maybe Rangers could compliment their current weapon of choice through the use of melee/ranged weapon kits (much like the ones Artisans can make, only geared toward hunting creatures) that only Rangers could create and use. These would no way be intended to replace our current throwable traps, but maybe add different kinds of bonuses, depending on whattype of kit is used, when used against creatures. It would also add a "rangerish" feel to our current favorite weapon. Just a thought.

Hate to pimp my own posts, but I thought I'd throw this old document back into the ring (since I'm working on updating it...again).
This is the outdoorsman proposal, and it includes a request for Ranger weapons-- one of each type (melee and ranged). What I did to try to ensure that we still were primarily creature-hunters is make it so that the damage dealt by our weapons is blocked by all armors effectively, but barely blocked by animals (which is essentialy how it should be-- since ring-mail, most armors can block arrows-- but animals skins typically cannot block a strike from a composite-tipped arrow)
anyway, enjoy--

And keep in mind, the CURB is going to change all weapons anyhow - so rumor says.Granted the bow is a ranged weapon, but again, it intrudes on no other class. Even drop the ranges to keep people happy. Not many people shoot long range bow shots. Owen's idea of varying arrows is great, others have posted the same type of ideas. Give us one offensive arrow (bleed) and make the rest defensive/state arrows, like our traps.Ghillie suit - WILL NOT MAKE US INVISIBLE IN PVP. Let me say that again - NO INVISIBILITY IN PVP. For the really smart, no invisiibility due to the use of packet sniffers and promoting their use as in other games. Otherwise, a Ghillie would be like a super /conceal. Planet specific - pretty dumb wearing an Endor suit on Tatooine.Guys, if you do a search for the topics, we have posted all these before. Hell, I posted about Ghillie suits way back in 2003.JB
