The new thread is up guys.
Sorry it took so long. I did my best to preserve what it meant to bea Ranger-- tactical, reliant on traps, etc. while making us a profession that is worthwhile to have. In the end, I think I was able to balance out the desire to maintain the "Outdoorsman" spirit while also ensuring that we have game-wide abilities that make us worthwhile in combat.
I know a lot of people don't want us to be a cookie-cutter profession when it comes to combat. I think this little theory allowed me to see us as something different than the typical "put tons of damage on them as fast as possible" mentality. It gives us something a bit different, and makes us be both active and re-active in combat, changing our tactics based around what we're up against.
I still love the spirit of the Outdoorsman, the idea of being a wilderness expert is still what keeps me a Ranger, and I tried to keep that spirit in mind. I hope you guys like the ideas. I think the ideas of a self-enhancing class will greatly influence me (though I obviously won't keep anything that everybody hates) when I'm writing the Outdoorsman 3.0.

To be honest I don't think the argument for or against Creature Harvesting really matters at this moment (no offence). If they were going to remove Creature Harvesting they would not do it until our revamp anyway. Or upgrade or whatever the heck it is. (Do you notice they say revamps are coming and nothing happens, then they say no more revamps and we immediately get two?
I think they are just messing with us!!!) Anyway, back to my point. When we do get our revamp I don't think we really need to "give up" skills in order to get others. We don't need to get rid of Creature Harvesting - we just need everything else brought up to the smae level of usefulness. And if we were going to give up our skills we would have to give up both Harvesting and Tracking, since those are our two really useful ones - and personally I am rather attached to them! /grin
I do understand the feeling that maybe we need to trade skills to get others, or totally rethink our profession and what we are in the universe. It is born from the feeling of "nothing else has worked, lets try this." or more specifically "We've been throwing the outdoorsman at them for years with no result, lets try something different." But I do not really think that is true. I think we, most of us, picked up Ranger because of what it said in the skill boxes or in the (gulp) manual. And Harvesting, Tracking, Camoflage, etc. were all part of that. What we need is for the profession to live up to the potential we saw and initially became excited about, not to change it completely. Changing the profession "focus" won't necessarily make it better, it will just make it appeal to different people.
I don't really care what FotMer decides to pick up Ranger for credits or who has a Ranger alt, I play for myself. No matter what there will always be people picking up professions for shallow reasons, just ignore them and play the game you enjoy. Eventually they will move on.
