Ok playing devil's advocate

Back in August 2003, Holocron posted the following on our forums:

[parts of the quote from Holocron with a link to the rest of the post]

Shortly after that, we received /areatrack and /camouflage. The rest of the promises on that list never appeared. While both were very useful at the time, /areatrack has become less effective with the introduction of player cities, mounts, and vehicles and /camouflage has gained many bugs (including breaking consistently on very low level mobs like kreetles and rasps and having extremely varied results with NPCs). The addition of player cities, mounts, and vehicles and the implementation of several new rules (such as calling pets/vehicles without a camp) have also further devalued many of our initial skills. This leaves us in a situation very similar to where we were in August (if not worse). We know that Ranger is not working as intended. We also know that only a very small proportion of the player base bothers with the majority of the profession (many Rangers know more Jedi than they do Master Rangers).

Good background information...a little wordy...try this:

We were promised items such as lure traps, hunting blinds and /track...etc. We received /camo and /ar. Camo is not noticably better or more effective than /maskscent yet it takes resources. /ar, while by far the best skill we have, is still buggy and is a far cry from the /track command that Holocron posted. With player cities draining wilderness spawns, droids/pets/vehicles no longer needing camps, Rangers are feeling an encroachment on our natural habitat.

After this point, we can insert our question.

Please feel free to pick apart my suggestion....

thanks

I would highly recommend including something to indicate that we don't necessarily want exactly what was promised (as the game has changed quite a bit since then). While most Rangers would be happy to get just what was promised (as it would definately make us a lot more effective), there are too many good ideas floating around on this forum to settle only for that. I would prefer to focus on differentiation from Scout instead of the specific things promised. Maybe something more like:

We were promised differentiation from Scout. We received /camouflage and /areatrack along with promises of other changes. Since then, many players have collaborated to generate more ideas on the ranger profession. With player cities draining wilderness spawns, droids/pets/vehicles no longer needing camps, and travelling being reduced to autorunning with a speeder, Rangers are feeling an encroachment on our natural habitat. With this in mind, can we expect to see any significant changes to our skill set in the coming publishes or will we need to wait until after the Space Expansion is released? Also, are the majority of the changes likely to come in small bursts or is it more likely to come as a dedicated portion of a publish?

All I changed are some minor grammatical subject-verb agreement issues and thats it....

The content should be good to go... you rock Nemo0

My second question to be considered:

Rangers, are supposed to excel at hunting and killing creatures, while it may be unbalancing to give Rangers innate combat skills, Rangers would like to have a Ranger specific weapon that would enhance their ability to take down a beast in the wild, some of the proposals have been the Trap Launcher or the High Tech Bow. While these items mesh with most Rangers' vision of their profession, does it correlate with the Dev's vision as well?

How can giving rangers innate combat abilities be concidered unbalancing?

1) Given the fact that you are able to master up to 3 Elite combat professions, accumulating all the bonuses, skill mods, special abilities, defenses, from 3 elite professions. In most cases its mastering 2 elite professions, and adding TN or medic skills, but still you are able to cap your major defensive stats Ranged/Melee def, not to mention the ability to gain both ranged and melee mitigation..

2) Ranger IS a COMBAT PROFESSION and should be infinately more of a combat related profession than a CM is. We are required to enter into combat in order to use our abilities and fulfill our purpose, yet NO combat specific abilities exist in the profession. Well maybe we can run away from our enemies better, but you see my point.

3) the injection of a Ranger specific weapon would be giving rangers innate combat abilities, and without specific combat related specials, skill mods, defensesand special abilities use of these weapons would impair a ranger in combat even furthur.

great job Nemo0 and Agon, really dig that question (even if i still think it's a general one... heh)...

what i like is that it encompasses all of the ranger tree, not just one skill modifier or ability... because these questions are so public (not only seen here on the ranger forums where we know our own problems), i'm really glad you guys are trying to get all of our issues out there..

only thing about it i'm not sure on is the "also" in the last sentence... TH tends to dislike multiple questions when he only asked for one, and even if they are related the "also" makes it appear seperate... maybe:

"With this in mind, can we expect to see any significant changes to our skill set in the coming publishes before the Space Expansion, orare the majority of the changes likely to come in small bursts?"

but i'm not grammaticist... as can be seen by the proliferous ellipses... you guys really are doing a great job, i'll butt-out now...

JuCat:

Thanks for the response...

You have a couple of good points that I wanted to expand upon:

1) I did write may overbalance which, in a sense covers my behind

2) True, you can master 3 combat professions that will make you pretty much undefeatable in PvP and will render you a killing machine of creatures. We as I would like to see this addressed as well. While we are as we stand..not a combat profession but combat support, I would like to see Rangers as a semi-combat profession.

3) I do agree with you that rangers need more punch...more bang for the buck....However I think thatthe Ranger profession should enhance combat skills that we choose to take either in ranged or melee combat. And yes...I really want a trap launcher too...

Lastly...the second question was thrown out as an after thought....I think that we are moving in a different direction as per the question we are going to ask...

thanks again JuCat

I really hate missing one stinking day of Forum Posts

So now that all of the good ideas have been taken....I agree wholeheartedly that we use the Holocron/Agonthalia/Nemo0 post idea.

Make them answer for what they promised us almost a year ago. Man I wish I could go to Fan Fest and make them say in person, why they hate Ranger's.

I do however havea statment concerning overbalancing....

You coud give us flamethrowers....and we would still be underpowered.....Overbalancing is not realy a concern when we spend 140 points just to become a slighly better scout....

yeah... I know

If it were up to me...we would be a mix of a super-spy/ Army Ranger/ Wilderness Hunter.... my intent was "baby steps" first...

I officially retract the word "overpowered"

Yeah but thats a problem seeing as we're potientially stepping on the commando's toes. Many of them want commando's to be a hybrid of stealth and power so it would be pretty pointless having two professions that do the same thing.

Imo what we need from the Dev's is an answer on what our role in PVP will be. Then and only then can we pick a direction. Atm we've just not got anything to work with.
