and what you consider an office worker is what i would consider a novice artisan in SWG.

We are talkigna bout professions.

Anyone that has mastered there professions, is going to make more money than the person that provides them the resources so the masters can ply their trade.

Then I guess you should have been more specific with your statement. You made a general reference to "white collar workers". White collar workers include the $22k/yr mailroom boy, not just $322k/yr doctors.

back to the economics discussion...

yes, there is opportunity cost in everything. but there is another side to the story as well: supply and demand

last time i looked on the galactic bazaar, the market was flooded with hides and bones (not so much meat, so i will probably move into that market myself). now, your argument about oc is 100% valid, and here's what the reprocussions of this *should* be:

since it is true that the oc of harvesting/selling resources is higher than the potential income gained from this endeavour, suppliers *should* leave the market to pursue other ventures. as suppliers gradually leave the market, the excess supply will slowly but surely be used up, until eventually the market clears. then, of course, there will be a period where more suppliers come into the market seeing it as a viable money making opportunity, and there will be such fluctuations around the clearing point of the market indefinitely.

however, this is not happening. the supply of suppliers (heh) is not decreasing. why might this be? bounty hunters: because bounty hunter is such a popular profession, and there are literally thousands of people training to be bounty hunters, there is a disproportionate number of members of the scouting profession. this is the cause (in my opinion) of all the excess resources that are driving prices down and ranger profits down as well.

my solution would be to nerf the heck out of bounty hunter and remove the scouting requirement. there, i said it! i don't want to go off on a tangent here, but alot of the bh arguments i've seen focus on 1 point: ''we should be better than everyone else at combat because we have the highest req''. or, loosely translated, ''we need to be uber because we are forced to master scout instead of just mastering marksman''. so...take off the scout requirement, and then not only will you be able to bring bounty hunter back down to earth a little in terms of fighting equality, which will (for the most part) make all other elite combat professions happy (and do a great deal to equalize pvp), but you will also be doing a great service to rangers as well. 2 birds, one stone. okay, now, i've talked too long off topic, and if i'm lucky, i won't have just started a flame war..

oh well, i guess most of us (myelf included) didn't get into rangering for the money anyway

oooh, big fancy words and theories.

everything has opportunity costs. it isn't going to be balanced. opportunity costs doesn't effect the price, supply and demand effects the price. opportunity cost (oc) is a resultant factor of supply and demand.

what the original post hinted at, was that theo wanted to have oc be a determining factor in price, where in reality, oc isn't a direct factor, the direct factors are supply and demand. oc is an indirect factor. the oc for hunting hide/bone/meat will help determine the supply. if the higher the oc (i.e. credits per minute, cpm), the more supply there will be.

ok, so let me spell it out, using smaller words. theo is arguing to raise the prices of hide/bone/meat because he can make more money doing destroy missions (or crafting armor). in reality, people will only pay what it is worth to them. if you are concerned about earning the highest yield of credits per minute, then being a ranger probably isn't going to get you that.

I think people are forgeting that this is a game, and not real life. In real life most people are concerned about maximizing profit vs time ---- most but not all people. In a game, you have to take the fun factor in to consideration as well. If you have move fun hunting, than doing missions, then hunting doesn't HAVE to pay as well. Even in real life, there are some enlightened people, who have discovered that happiness is more important than cash. People actually get jobs doing something they enjoy doing, even if it doesn't maximize their profit per hour.

I have always felt the same as you do, and I still do to a degree...

but now with every "scout" able to harvest in a group, organic resources are abundant.

YOU are 200% correct if you are soloing, but are only 50% correct when considering groups.

If I'm in a group of 10-15 people on Endor lets say, I can harvest between 50-150 units from one kill

and we may kill a herd of animals (like 6 or 7 creatures) in 10 minutes, so...6 creatures * 75 units(avg) = 450 units of X in 15 minutes. Thats 450 * 4 (4 sets of 15 minutes in an hour) = 1800 units of X an hour...

GRANTED these times are skewed when you consider you may want a very specific organic unit (ie. Endorian Wooly Hide) you may not run into 4 herds of wooly creatures an hour...

In conclusion if you use my estimates in conjuntion with the thread authors considerations and other peoples, we may yet come to a fair arrangement...

I'm a ranger/pistoleer on Radiant. I mainly made my loot doing contracts for between 15-25cpu, with the contracts usually being between 10k-20k of a resource. On aplanet like corellia I can usually grind about 10k a day of a resource. SoI would do that a few times a week, making between 150k-250k a job. Thought I was making a decent living... but then I stumbled onto some of these auctions on the forums. Wow. The highest paying contract I had ever had was Yavin avian for 25cpu. Well, a few weeks back I managed to sell 1k of good wooly for 60cpu on the forum. So myadvice to rangers who want to earn crafter-style money is:

Don't do contracts. Find the current hot resource and grind away at it, then save it for a weak shift. Then hit your galaxy forum. You'll be amazed, I was.

I prefer hunting alone. First of all, it's hard to find anyone else who actually wants to stay in the field with me for a week straight hunting. Usually only fellow rangers dig this lifestyle, and we all know the drawbacks to grouping with other harvesting-capableplayers (-% drops). Also, going out there with someone and not grouping to avoid this obviously does no good, as you'lleither be missing out on half of a lair's resources, or in the case of your friend harving then giving to you, chances are they can't harvest near the % a ranger can.

Diversify. Our camo skills let us go where others can't or won't go. Do yourself a favor get at least Survey 2 and then buy a few heavy harvs, be it mineral/flora. You figure for every big mineral/flora boom, there has to be some spots non-rangers don't frequent too often to survey. Dantooine Berries, for example. Get out there in the wild, find a high % area and plant yourself a heavy harv. Money in the bank.

I didn't become a ranger thinking or hopingI was going to get rich, but I admit it's become a nice perk.I'd still love rangering even if I was broke, though. Probably because my weak RAM makes cities lag.

You didn't mention harvests, dude.

Reptilian flier lair: 2790 credits to destroy. 8 waves of 3 creatures per lair = 24. about 30 units of meat per kill. 720 units of meat from lair. Until yesterday Dath avian was OQ 940. What this means is that doctors can use it to make buffs that reach 2500. These buffs sell for 2k each. It takes 28 units of avian for a buff plus less important ingredients. I was selling this 940 oq avian on bazaar for 30c/u and direct sales for 20c/u, and I couldn't keep it in stock.

720x3 = 21600

So, 25 minutes to solo lair. (2790 + 21600) / 25 = 975 c / m

Now you are asking 'how the hell do you solo a lair of fliers, they all aggro?'

Well, here's the deal: Unequip weapon. Walk to within 19 meters of the loneliest mature flier. Music will start. Haul butt at least 40 meters away from lair. Equip weapon, obliterate flier. Repeat.

The most economical way to do these missions if you're a pistoleer is with Tat sunburns and Omachek or Bivoli Tempuri. One sunburn will boost action and strength regen to 2000, and you can still drink another one. Bivoli increases mind regens. Combined you can spam specials non-stop. This will cut your mission time down considerably, even to 10 - 12 minutes, and Tat sunburns are about 200 a pop.

When wooly hide on Tat was good I would make bank on Bantha missions.

So the best way to make a living as a ranger is to find the best resources to use and sell them for what artisans, docs, and bio-engineers are willing to pay, which is usually a lot more than you imagine.
