Thread: in need of a Ranger's point of view
PBN
My comments were in no way directed at you personally. I don't think I ever mentioned Chef, it was the Docs I was ragging on. Chefs are now on the short end of the stick, but only are there due to the antics of others, mainly Docs.
Quite frankly, I have stopped harvesting on order except for a couple of friends. Or, in last nite's case, when some chucklehead offers 100cpu for something I can get on a planet that has little danger, I am there. For once, areatrack worked great, I got 2k of hide in less than an hour and made 200k credits. Laughed all the way to the bank.
I will go and harvest good stuff, and stockpile it. If someone is offering a price I think is fair, I sell. If not, it sits in my craft machine.
Again, not you personally, not even Chefs in general. It is unfortunate that the many have to suffer for the sins of the few, but then, Life is not fair.
I would suggest finding a Ranger and offering him discounts, freebies (a couple plates of veghash now and then), and see how that works out.
Good Luck

The only problem with this is there are not enough of us to cover the demand to personally collect resources. If I need to collect Insect on Endor and Avian on Dathomir, I will not get one of those sense you have to hunt the entire shift just to run a factory to do 3 crates of food or stims. Those three cratessell in about an hour. Also consider the Role Play aspect of this, REAL trappers in the fur trade have traps that "harvest" ever sense there was a thing called "hunting and gathering". Not having this kind of trap makes no sense to my pea-brain.
Add to this few see a point to being a Ranger when Scout + freed skill points will yield a better hunter and hold up to PvP. This is the direction the guilds go and hunt just enough for themselves. The few freelancers left can work all week to get one or 2 merchants the stack of just one of the components. And if it drops off of a Durni, there is an order of magnitude change in Cr/U. A trap here would work wonders.
Im a rather new ranger but i like the idea of a ranch. It just needs to be implemented correctly. It should be ranger only and the we should have to capture the creatures ourselves. The put them in the ranch and watch them slowly multiply. As the population in the ranch increases so should the creatures produced. ( exponential growth rate) This way its not really a harvester. The ranch only provides us with creatures on hand to harvest when we like, while gaining intrest when we have more creatures in the bank. The maintance of the building should balance out the benefits. This way rangers who want ranches and those who dont will be on even footing.
There probably be some kind of limit on the population but i think it should be a limit on the potential resources that can be harvested. So u could have hundreds of kreetles or only a couple of banthas. (sorry i spent a lot of time on tat in my pre ranger days) And making different size ranchs with different size limits would create something which rangers might actually have to buy ![]()
And perhaps the ability to have vendor that can only sell hide/meat/bone/milk. i have yet to take an order. (the idea doesn't appeal to me) While maintaining ranger and a combat profession i would find it hard to get merchant, and selling through a merchant would limit our profit and increase prices on resources which are already highly priced per unit. (though not without reason) Considering that high cpu selling on the bazar is impractical.
Perhaps its just me. I haven't been a ranger for long. I'm not a master yet and I haven't taken many orders so I'm pretty inexperienced. But I kind of like the idea of a farm. Most rangers are hunters and thats fine, but why can't we add another element to the profession and let some be farmers? These farmers could harvest from their livestock. The harvests wouldn't kill the animal(kinda like shearing a sheep) and the resources would only be of medium quality at best. The harvest would also yield 50% of what you would have gotten if you had killed the creature in the wild and you could only harvest a creature once a week or so.
These farms should become available at novice ranger and the number of animals you can keep should increase as you progress towards master ranger, perhaps capping off at 100 animals. These farms could also be built on the nonbuildable planets and would require a massive amount of resources to construct. These could be the outposts that have been discussed. In this way, even with 100 creatures the resource yield wouldn't even come close to what you could do on a single day's hunt.If any structure should be allowed to be built on those planets it should be a farm or ranch and if any profession should be allowed these structures it should be rangers. I've never even considered getting a house because it seems to me that rangers shouldn't have houses, they should be out in the wilderness. Being able to go home to a farm/ranch on endor or dathomir would change that however. It seems that if we are to have a home that it should be a farm/house on one of the wild planets where no other profession can build.
I find the other professions not even remotely interesting but would still like more depth to the ranger profession. At present we are hunters, but I feel we should be allowed more than that. I also feel this wouldn't ruin the economy for rangers but actually add to the significance of our profession.
Finally, these structures would have to be given to us in addition to harvesting traps. Not all rangers want to be farmers. Some may be like me and only want to do it part time while hunting the rest. Others will want to hunt full-time and will still need harvesting help. The harvesting traps should still be implemented in addition to the farms.
Just my opinion.

Trap = good. Harvester = bad. I don't mind the luretrapor /track as that would make getting a certain resource a tad easier, but I honestly think any (yes, any) resource that can be gathered while afk (or while not even online) is bad. I suppose if therewas an animal harvester/helper that you had to be around to use (aka lure trap) I could go with it, but people want the easy way to get the resource, don't they?
On a somewhat related note, it has been mentioned that maybe the farm could spit out small quantities and/or have not so good stats. Well, how is this better than hunting it by hand? The resources that people say aren't plentiful are the high OQ stuff, right?
On the other end of the spectrum (if these farms were to put out high quantities of a resource), in the increased harvesting thread it was said that too much increase in harvesting would destroy the economy. I personally don't think it would, but bear with me here. So, all of a sudden you have a pile of "free" resources that suddenly pop into the market. Even if they were to put the farmschematic/certification as a Ranger-only skill (like many have said, we should then rename the profession to Farmer) there would be a quick addition of Rangers to the game followed by a mass exodus as the resource market becomes sosaturated that very few Rangers would be needed. This happened with AS and WS on my server; to the point that it is hard to find weapons and armor other than from a few sources (there is probably more to it than just a large influx of weapons into the market).
Perhaps these are the ramblings or a cranky old Ranger who is afraid of change, butI hope you can find the logic in my statements.

Ranger: 20k stack? If I have time... between you the doctor, the chef (who wants meat for other things), the architect, your other order, the armorsmith, the weaponsmith (special drops), The two of us (me and the other ranger on your server) have been pretty busy.
Lol, me and the other ranger!!! Wh00t. That's good stuff. I actually found found 2 other rangers on the same planet the other day. It felt like a might cold night in the desert.
Now for a little seriousness. Back in October, I tried to start up a little venture on Sunrunner where ppl would bring their contracts to me and scouts/rangers would dedicate a whopping 3 hours of their week to a group hunt to fill one of the contracts. The idea was to have 2 groups per night hunting and each person that brought mea contract would get one hunt. If they wanted 15k hide, and the hunt only netted 10K then too bad, you had to submit a new contract (I know that's not the way contracts generally work, but I wasn't going to be on every hunt and I had to have a means to control and schedule the hunts.) If the hunt netted 22k and they only wanted 10K then the remaining 12k would be put up on a vendor or used to fill a similar contract. Now that my weapon profession is something more uber than a carbineer, I see that this system isn't necessary, but I outlined it here to demonstrate the research and time i've spent looking into how to handle these issues.
Right now, a chef/be can charge all he wants. The demand so far outways the supply that if they wanted they could sap all strength from the economy. We, as rangers and scouts need to start charging more for our services and goods. If this causes a huge inflation in prices for goods from the be/doc/chef, then the system will have to be adjusted. That adjustment will likely come in the for of increased harvesting for rangers.
There is currently a push from the ranger community for higher harvest rates for rangers. the reason for this is that in a group, ranger harvests are barely more than scouts. The argument for better harvesting has come in two forms: More resources per harvest and multiple resources per corpse. Some are arguing for 2 resource harvests and others for all three.
I have a third idea. I'd like to see a 30% increase to harvest at master and a new skill at frontiering 3 that allows you two harvest a secon resource. The second resource would be harvestable at 50% of the max rate. So, if you harvested 120 meat off a corpse for a chef, you could still harvest 60 hide for yourself to make traps and camps from.
