I don't much care for running missions either-- somehow it seems more monotonous than just striking out and areatracking. I typically land at the most desolate starport on a given planet and then activate a POI wp that's reasonably far away, say between 6 and 10 km. Then I walk to it. I'm rarely disappointed and usually have a decent stack going by the time I get to the POI, at which point I pick a different one to walk to. As for how much I harvest during buff sessions, well, I never keep track. Most of the time I'm not buffed anyway, and can just hunt at a leisurely pace, stopping every 42 minutes to take a couple more swigs of brandy. Just yesterday I was gathering yav animal bones and bristley hide for a client. He didn't want much, and I ended up getting 10k of the hide and 7k of the bones in a little less than three hours. No missions, just fun. Plus, a lucky encounter with four stintaril prowlers netted over 2k bone in a matter of minutes. Oh, and unlike some rangers, I likeusing aharvesting droid.
Just go at your own pace and have fun. Try not to have unrealistic expectations-- 100k stacks (solo)in a day or two only happen with things like dath leathery hide, unless you enjoy staring at a computer screen until your retinas mutiny. Have fun, enjoy, build a good working rep with your buyers, and the money will come.
Oh, and don't eat the brown veghash.

My last "walk about" as a ranger was for Yavinian Scaley Hide, 80K units in three or four playings. I had set out to get 100K but as usually I got bored with killing Kliknicks and Snakes so I stopped short of a self appointed goal, the first sign it was time to retire. As per my usual M.O. this was unbuffed, unarmored, and solo.
