Thread: another ranger class template ... my two cents

I forgot to respond to a couple of things in my last post:

1) Special ranger powerups -- The whole idea of having a ranger weapon was to remove our dependancy on combat elite classes and allow us to play a bit more with our SP. If all we got were special powerups, then we would still have to master a combat elite.

2) Tranqs -- I feel this already fits in perfectly with the launcher idea. You make a tranq bolt and equip it in your launcher. From the way you describe it, though, I think it might be a better trap than a bolt. The launcher was supposed to be a general purpose weapon with no ties to other classes so that all rangers could use it without penalty.

After taking the day to think about it, I've decided it would be a bad idea to allow other specialized fighting styles (either ranged or melee) to effect how the launcher is used. I always kind of imaged it to be similar to heavy wepons in that there is only one branch that gives power to it, so it has to be particularly strong. The fact that it was in a completely different class (not considered ranged or melee ... maybe light weapon class?) removed the issue of overpowering by completely removing the possibility. The launcher should be a strong weapon on it's own account. We shouldn't have to push for similarities with other classes so we can overpower them.

One of the main reasons to have our own weapon is so that we don't have to get another elite combatclass if we don't want to. With the skill point we spend I agree. We would have the opportunity to master another novice profession or dabble in a artisan elite if we so chose.

However, I do think it would be a good idea to have two styles of ranger weapon, one that worked at a longer range (between carbineer and rifleman) and one that worked at melee range. That way a ranger could easily switch from his ranger weapon to his chosen elite without having to change his distance. Both of these weapons would exist in the light weapons class and not have any tie-ins to other classes.

Let me know what you think.

I can get on board with this. I m not crazy about the arm strap style though.... I would think something in the lines of the elephant gun and a Ranger Melee weapon.

I had another thought for camps tonight which would apply to all camps.

Why not make it possible for image designers to make their adjustments in camp with the same speed as they would in the garage? This would mean that basic camps would have a use again and Image Designers wouldn't be required to spend their time in one of the major cities.

As I've said before, I'm more a fan of the launcher idea than the elephant gun. The idea of having a massive damage attack don't really appeal to me as a Ranger. I agree, we should have an increased damage against creatures (much like the TKA get damage bonuses) as we increase in skill. But I'ma Ranger, and I identify myself as a player who uses tactics and terrain to my advantage. A "one shot" gun or anything that would allow us to just spam an attack would make the proffession change, and that I don't want to see.

I like the idea of a melee weapon that attaches to the arm...and I like the idea of is being seperate. No reason we should have one weapon for two different ranges. The art would have to be right...something like a blade attached to the forearm, but it would work. the attack motion could be a stabbing motion, and there could be specials where you slash (doing extra kinetic damage, and applying the charge) to a quick double hit (that hits the animal with twice the damage and two charges of the weapon at once (i.e. it should do a little kinetic damage, but then apply a double poison).

There should be specials as well in the Ranged line...double tap...A trap and dart at the same time attack. Perhaps a "soft tissue shot", etc.

okay that's the last post of the evening...night.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

I know I may step on a few toe/claws and whatever you ugly lizards have but rangers are hunters and to my knowledge (and own experience) there are no melee hunters. I use a rifle for deer a, shotgun for quail. I am sure there is some crazy crocadile hunter feller running around from time to time that may hunt with his bare hands but for the most part you hunt with ranged weapons. No real point to this post (like most of mine) but rangers should have a ranged weapon all to themselves and if tka blade swingers or whoever are upset about it I apologize, but this is a ranged type prof. imo

Happy hunting to all

I beat the tar out of an Antelope the other day!

-or-

What do think the poachers who run over deer are? They are htting the deer with a blunt object! It doesn't get more melee than that!

Disclaimer: Proof reading this, a lot of my ideas seem kinda under developed, but they get the point across nonetheless, so bear with the terrible transitions and such please (its summer time and I dont want to write good paragraphs anymore )

I never really liked the idea of a Ranger weapon myself. I seriously doubt they would make several versions of a ranger weapon so the one version they did make would probably be odd or annoying for some to use. Also, with the new timer that has been added for switching weapons it would make using it and then switching to a prefered weapon more difficult. What some have already mentioned before and an idea that I really really like is for Rangers to get specials that are not weapon specific. While it might make more sense to hunt with ranged weapons in the real world, SWG was not designed with that mentality, it was designed to cater to all different types. Being a Ranger should enhance our combat abilities, whether we are using a high-powered rifle or a big stick.

A lot of us have had a lot of idea's about Rangers are, but all of these visions are basically the same thing. If your idea of a ranger is Aragorn and the Dunadan then you are thinking of specialized hunters. The Rangers of the north were hunters of the servants of Sauron, thats what they trained for all of their lives, but they did not have different weapons than other men-at-arms, they used swords and bows too, their skills are what set them apart. Army Rangers are also this way, they do not really have cool new weapons and toys that regular army doesn't, but their tactics are vastly different; they operate in smaller groups, and they use stealth and suprise. Antarian Rangers were trained to operate in all environments, but they still used the same weapons as all other soldiers. It wastheir training that differed from normal soldiers.

I have never encountered an idea for what a ranger is that revolves around different weapons. Rangers have always been people who use different or unconventional tactics to fight their battles, and it makes perfect sense. Lets say there is a nameless country and it's ground-based military has two parts, a regular army, and rangers. Now if the rangers had a weapon that was extremely useful and lethal to this country's target, why would they not share it with the regular army, it just wouldn't make sense not to. They could easily take a few hours and instruct some members of the regular army in its use and then they could take that knowledge and teach the other soldiers. A weapon is a tool and nothing more, it does not nessecarily make us better combatants. Any fool can pick up a gun and pull the trigger, or charge brainlessly at a target spraying bullets (or throwing punches). It is training, knowledge, and tactics that make all the difference between a great combatant, and a dead one.

Ok, off my soap boxand now onto what specials we could have.

It would make sense of course to have a "big bang" kind of attack, we know where a creature is weakest, and we should be able to strike a crippling blow to it, more damaging than any other foot soldier could hope to do unless (s)he was lucky. We have also learned that the dizzy state effect is only effective against (N)PC's from a recent 19 answers threadby TH...well why not give Rangers the ability to dizzy creatures, we know what would do that to them, and that would instantly make us more valuable in groups without making us too nessecary. We could make a fight much more easy by dizzying a creature and letting someone KD it so it keeps falling down, but a group certaintly wouldn't perish without us. Right now I dont really have any other decent ideas for specials, but this could be a start.

PS. All of your ideas were great and well though out PSK, even the weapon, I just had to disagree a little

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to put some thought into ranger specific specials for creature damage/defense as an alternate to the weapon and include both in the proposal. For now, I'll just bump this thread to the top to get more feedback on these points.

What would everyone like to see in terms of combat abilities for ranger? If your ideas are siginificantly different than mine, please give an outline for a full new combat branch.
