Thread: Would you continue harvesting if it wasn't profitable?

I would still hunt. The money's nice, and on Naritus there are multiple buyers who offer anywhere from 50 to 100 cpu, but I like watching my character grow in skill and hunt bigger and scarier things. Tonight I soloed my first enraged rancor lair, and it was pretty damn cool. I'm not very powerful-- currently TKA 2/1/2/2, Ranger 0/1/4/0, entertainer 0/2/2/0, and a little medic. (I like to be as self-sufficient as possible.) I refuse to use buffs, too, so after I got Meditate 2 (and the very handy powerboost), I headed to dath to see whose ass needed kicking.
It was a blast, and though I harvested hides the whole time, nobody I know is looking for that particular type at the moment. If I can't sell it, well, I can make many a camp with all those rancor skins (almost 7k). As an aside and in regards to a different post, yeah, my little droid is scared of enraged rancors too.
Bottom line is, I like being paid well for my efforts if possible, but those efforts are their own reward as well. The hunt's the thing, to paraphrase shakespeare. Well, that and just simply being a ranger. The few, the proud, and all that.

I'm more or less part-time hunter for credits.
The occasional good shift of ressources that promise a high harvestyield (dathomirian carnivore meat or leathery hide, endor insect meat as examples) keeps me going easily enough to ignore all those high cpu contracts that make me kill kaadus for hours on end
.
It's a simple thing for me: If it is not located on dathomir, endor or yavin, I won't do it (I hate hunting on the buildable planets). If it doesn't give me at least 150 units per kill, I won't do it.
Naturally this rules me out of almost all doc-contracts, but with the good yields things like dath carn meat offer I still make enough profit from one shift of this to keep me going for a couple of month even with my quite expensive habits (we had a semi-decent shift recently on eclipse, I sold at half the cpu the open market offered and sold around 20 mil creds worth of meat to a single person in that shift)

It would realy be cool if the better the resource the harder the planet etc.
So we would be able to hunt on the harder and more fun planets like yav, dath and endor much more. Endor is my favourite planet by far and its just sad that most of the time when i need to resource hunt, its on lok, naboo or rori.

Like others here I mainly hunt for my guild.I got tired of millionaire master doctors asking me to hunt for them and only offerng 30cpu. My alt is my money maker. But I find I still spend more time with my Ranger just because he is fun.

Sure.. Although I don't ever see it as being void of profit. Even if there was an organized boycott of paying large sums of money for resources, limiting it to 5cpu, someone would always pop up and add 5cpu to that.. then another would offer 10cpu, etc.
I enjoy creature harvesting because it means I'm not always stuck hunting the same old stuff. (Krayts for pearls, Jantas for blood or mission money, etc) The resource shifts and different professions that need them always take me to different planets to hunt different creatures. Although the creatures aren't always the most challenging (corellian herbivore or avian), I still enjoy harvesting and it keeps things different every week or so.

Nope. If the crafters all got together and decided to pay no more then 20-30cpu, they could count me and my harvesting groups out. And believe me, we often harvest more then the docs can afford as it is now. 200-300k of a really good resource. And that's at 50-100cpu.
So no, I would not.

To be honest if the docs got together and only paid 20-30cpu (highly unlikely) the majority would not pass this saving onto their customers.
There are some realy good people who are docs on eclipse and alot i know as friends, i offer then cheap or free organics in exchange for cheap buffs etc but they never charge more than 12k max (as only buffer there ofpeak).
Some want to charge 30k+ which is shocking realy but there is a good few docs who are great people who i think would pass this saving on which i think is a good thing. The majority however would just see profit margins skyrocket and pocket the saving.

You go with the market though. If they did band together and decideon 20-30cpu a couple would still go above it and ruin the meaning of it. Plus with the upcoming combat revamp (hahaa i just love saying it because it wont happen until St Patricks day next year) organics will be harder to get with the changes. And it should either keep the costs the same or increase. That or these silly FS combat bonuses will just negate anything the revamp does

Yes i would still harvest.
Sadly, because of various things, I have pretty much stopped hunting for clients. I hunt when i want, what i want. The other day, i delivered a 10k stack of meat to a doctor, and he was not happy with the meager results. He refused to pay what he offered and, well... kinda irked me.
At this point, ive kinda gotten sick of low payments, high demand and unhappy people. I will make my money other ways i guess.
I like harvesting, but that's not what i am a ranger for. I am a ranger to be a hunter and a survivor... not a mobile harvester that needs "maintenance"

I completely agree, thats how i see my ranger too.
Yes i harvest items and sell them on, but the real fun is in the hunt. I just wish hunting was more fun.

I had the exact opposite experience recently: I had some stacks of resources lying around that I didn't need and gave them to a crafter that frequents RIN. They ended up giving me what I considered a very nice tip for them. And none of the stacks were 10k.

Unforutnatly for me, the thrill of the hunt is gone. Be it fynocks on talus, tortins on rori, or bol bol's (spelling) on Endor, whatever, big or small, its all the same to me. Only difference is how long it takes me to kill it,what the harvest yield is, and if it's missionable or not.
It's just business to me now, no more, no less. Lately with no good harvest going, ive turned to themeparks for fun.

I love being a Ranger, but I didn't take it to get rich. If I wanted to make money, I'd pick up Artisan again and plant my 6 heavies. That's how I made serious money. Ranger just kept me liquid as I blew money on pistols; until I bought the RIS helmet, that is. I'm not poor; just not as rich as I used to be.
Valcyn had a dry spell creature resource-wise, so I did a bunch of theme parks and had a blast. I waited for e-mail contracts and monitored the trade forums for contracts. Currently, I'm collecting Rori carnivore. For a change, I tried working unbuffed which can be a challenge, but it maximizes my profits. I've got my eye on a RIS chest plate, you know.
Long story short (too late), I'd continue harvesting. I'd probably keep most of it for myself for tents, traps, and camo.
