Rebel Private.
I did resign once due a series of accidents with mine fields, turretsand ST's whilst out hunting, but I felt terrible about it so am a reb again.
I am 99.8% covert, the .2% was twice defending my home cities rebel base on Lok.

I love smacking down "the man".
I think every guy loves 'smacking the man', 'bashing the bishop' and 'beating the meat'. You're not alone there drak, perfectly healthy

Rebel Colonel here. I don't use my faction for anything in particular right now. I don't really deal with anyone who is not in my guild, but if someone asks me for training, I ignore faction.

I forgot to answer my own post. I'm a rebel.. I think my rank is SSgt. I have plenty of faction points to go to the next rank, but haven't gotten around to it.
I started as a rebel because my brother, who used to play, was rebel. I ended up joining the guild he was in, having faction points given to me and then being taken to the recruiter to become a rebel. I was drafted!
My original intention was to become an Imperial, but that was a long time ago.
Honestly, I like running around Tatooine and being scanned by stormtroopers... then being overted and chased through town. I've even survived a few PvP attacks that way and came out victorious. (unbuffed, I might add)
Otherwise, I deal with doctors, chefs and BE's from all factions (most are neutral or imperial) and I know many rangers who are imperial. So, the GCW doesn't affect me, since I don't want to limit my business opportunities.

My affiliation is similar to Kotha's-- imperial, very low rank. Although if I bothered to find a recruiter, I'd probably get three or four promotions. Haven't been paying too much attention to the GCW, what with all the beasties running around begging to be hunted. Besides, my toonhas taken adefinite The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly view of the war-- it's in the way. It's both obstacle and opportunity. I'll enlist if I gotta to reach my goals, butI couldn't care less about the ideology behind it. Rebel, Imperial... I just wanna get paid. May get back into the faction point collecting though, if it does in fact have any bearing on ship accessibilty; this ranger needs a tie advanced. In the meantime, I'm slowly building up my bank account for the Great Ship Purchasingand maxing out those skills. Well, the mundane ones anyway-- ain't got no force sensitivity, don't want no force sensitivity. Say, do I get my Grumpy Old Ranger badge now?

Generally not stated in public, however

Currently, Master Sergeant for the Alliance.
Formerly, Sergeant in the Imperial Navy.
Though, to be honest, my sympathies lie with the trees. /meditate

Guess my forum tag says it all, huh? Warrant Officer II.
With a real life lifetime of 'question authority" and "subvert the dominant paradigm" etc Rebel was the only way to go.
I agree that faction should have nothing to do with training or other common courtesies.
May have a grayer head than many in the game: started because my 29 yr old son hooked me into it. We started a guild called Hobo Junction, which by Hobo Heritage is all about being pathless and unboundaried, a more Rebellish take on life, I think.
My son is a Master Doc and he spams: "Buffing 10k Imps pay 15k Overt Rebels buffed free" and yeah, he gets flagged. Once an Imp jumped into the buff circle and killed him, destroyed his droid - but while he was cloning an Imp in the circle rebuilt the droid and it was ready when he got back. A good time was had by all.

Im currently rebel, but first went imperial. Frankly im just a dirty little badge hunter
so i jumped ship after i finished the imp theme park (didnt get to kill the emperor tho.....i did try haha). Anyway theres stormtroopers abound to kill, but i usually stick to PvE cause i dont want to waste my time getting ganked from here to yavin 4

Rebel, I think my rank is somewhere around Lt. or some such. I came back to SWG after the Beta mainly because JtL seemed to be somewhat immenent and I thought it would be prudent to build up a nest egg in preparation. As to how it affects my play... not a great deal so much as I do not go out of my way looking for PvP, though it has led to a number of confrontations after I drew a TEF for either runninga Rebel mission or just removing a few stormtroopers from the environment. Guerilla of opportunity, I suppose. A few imperial players have come across me with the flag and usually with some damage from my encounters, and I was summarily executed for my crimes against the empire. I have neither the template nor temperment for RPG PvP play.
