Thread: Casual player now Master Ranger and more...
Thanks all for the info.
My choice is made, I guess... I'll first go with a sword for testing how it goes (it just look nice) and after I'll raise my rifle skills.
Once I got the Conceal Shot skill, I'll then decide if I want to keep my swordman skills.

I am a Pistoleer (2-4-4-4) with a dab of medic (0-0-3-0) and find I can take down anything given enough time and stim paks. And my pet CG helps too.
Fact is, I would encourage everyone to have some medic, at least 0-0-2-0 to use Bs.
Anyhow, that's what I am. Regardless of your choice, remember, its all about having fun.

You can use B level meds and stims at nov medic, they have a med skill rating of 5. You just can't make your own without going up the craft line. So at 0/0/0/0 in medic you can use stimB's, you don't need to take anything to get you there.
Holo-madness has sent me to ranger and I gotta say it's fun compared to the 1 trick pony that pistoleer is. I was a master pistoleer /master doc and limited to 1 style of attack, stack bleeds and chop at health bar. Now I have, gasp, tactics. And a reason to use those tactics. I would not recomend pistoleer unless you just want the speed line. There is very little else there.
WTG on Master man, congrats.
Well I'm a Master Ranger, Master Gunfighter (that's Pistoleer, pleaseput down the bricks) and Novice Medic (0/0/01 so I can make the woundpacks) and it works pretty well for me. But I do have to say that Pistoleer isn't all it's supposedly cracked up to be, many of the specials are broken or simply don't do enough to justify what they cost in either HAM points or their level in the trees. But there are some shots that are very good ones as well and those are the ones that people are focusing on when they pick up Pistoleer boxes. Another thing is there are many BHs and Smugglers who mix in some Pistoleer skills to augment the Pistol lines in those Professions, which inflates the numbers of "Novice Pistoleers" to make it look like a popular profession. It is one, as an add in, not a all-the-way-to-master one. I can honestlysay I know more Master Rangers than I know Master Pistoleers so that's saying something there.
As for Pistoleer not fitting in with the idea of a Ranger, well heck we can't even decide what the idea of a Ranger is, it varies from person to person. Some people wish we could have Image Designers put pointed ears on humans so they could complete their Legolas deal, others think we should get Smokey the Bear hats and get TEF flags on people who lean against a tree the wrong way, while others think we should get black berets (they didn't used to be standard issue for the whole Army) and garottes. The whole concept of "I'm a Ranger"is pretty wide open, ask any of them what that means and you'll get as many answers as there are people you asked. My personal in-game concept for my character is an Imperial Sector Ranger, think Texas Ranger who tracks down criminals, Rebels and people who bounce checks by daywhile by night hunts the biggest red concritters he can with the smallest pistol possible to do the Star Wars storytelling variations of the Grizzly Bear and the Pocketknife yarn.
He's basically not right in the head and has been told this by many many people as they come across him fan shotting whole Mutant Rancor lairs "just to see what'll happen".
Rangers with rifles are valid, CH-Rangers are as well,my best in-game friend is a Master Ranger with a sword and there are all sorts of Rangers between any of those two extremes, I'm sure somewhere out there is a Ranger who's also a Droid Engineer and packs a launcher pistol. I'd like to meet him because I need some new droids...
But I digress, congrats on making Master Ranger, it's a great profession and I wouldn't change from it for the world. As far as what is a good weapon skill to bring up to complement it, that's all a matter of choice and I've seen any and every combo under the sun work with it. When people ask me about what a Ranger can do when they're considering the profession I tell them pretty much anything you can think of, the skills aren't cut and dried and lots of things I do now I wouldn't have imagined doing a couple months ago, being a Ranger in itself leads to a lot of thinking outside the box, so use that to carry over into your other profession choice, pick what you think would be fun and then use a big hammer to get a square peg into a round hole and roll with it. If it works I'd like to hear what you did, if it doesn't try something else. That's one of the great things about the game, we can always change paths if we feel like it so experiment around.
