If someone hires me to track, say a krayt, how much would I charge to track that for them, would I charge by the hour, or would I charge by finding a creature? I mean, I am missing out on valuable hunting time. I thought that maybe a I would charge by the hour, plus an extra fee if I found one. So lets say I can harvest 10k of a 30cpu resource in an hour, I thought about charging 30k per hour of tracking, plus 100k for finding a krayt and 500k for finding an ancient. Is this too much? Or should I just charge for finding the beast. Any helpful hints will help. Thanks.

I don't do any tracking outside of my guild for the most part. but when i have, and rangers that i know that do it..... it is usually based on mood, and creature. and it comes down to X per to start Y per hour, and Z for finding it. X and Z are based on the difficulty of finding the creature.

Okay, first of all the "Don't flame me" Disclaimer: The following is an observation, meant as information for consideration and not as "The Right Way" to do it. There is only one way, and that's the one you ultimately are happy with.

Right, here we go.

First off, never, ever, ever agree to track based on results. You could track for creature X for days and not find anything (think gorax) or one of the party notices it before you "hey, YOU didn't find it, the medic did... and you still think you're getting paid?"

Agree a price up front. Per hour or part thereof. Set a minimum time and a maximum time that you're making yourself available.

Don't underprice yourself. Some high end earner is looking for an uber creature for a quest? You want to start thinking in terms of 100k / 200k per hour. In the past I've had a 'tell asking me to track krayts, I've been happily busy doing something else and thrown a silly price at them. 500k for half an hour, whether I find it or not... and dammit they said OK. Still, an hour later, I was a happy ranger (We found two as krayts but some jedi were already on the job. I left the clients to 'discuss' things)

You are being paid for a skill that you have. NOT for the random kindness of the spawn system. They want you to track, make them pay for that. If they want to pay a bonus on finding the target, fair enough.

Oh, and make sure they pay you up front. Never does any harm to ask. After all, you find that big beasty for them they are going to be too busy the next while killing it then hanging out with their guildies being uber to remember the ranger...

I track by time. 50k per hour, or any part of that hour if I happen to find the object of the search faster. The money is paid up front.

At the end of the hour I usually say see ya, as I am bored beyond tears.

I do specify right off I will not be fighting any creatures unless they want to include me in the group, with full harvest/loot sharing rights. Failing that, I findthe objectand leave. Or the hour ends and I leave.

You can make some decent change doing this for Jedi's in training and the Hermit quest.

(One guy offered me 100k to find the pirates for him. Proving I am a nice guy, I refused the money and told him they were 150m to his north. I had just done a /ar to see what peoples were about. I even told him his other North as he took off South.)

nope, you'd never see a ranger do that...

"Bantha, 320m SW. Follow me..."
"Guys? Where'd you go?"
"We went SW... where the heck are you??"
"err... I was just, uhm, checking for a good campsite..."

I never even though about tracking for a profit before somone sent tell that they wanted to pay me 100k an hour plus a 100k bonus if I found them a Giant Canyon Krayt, needless to say my first tracking job I had them bring me some meat for camo kits, being me to lazzy to do it myself. but the First /area I did i found the dumb thing, leading to a spwan site of it. I sat back and watched this group kill it, I havested what i wanted and left, since i was asked to find a few things for the hermit but the guy didnt like my price of 100k an hour per quest. and in reguards to those pirates even with tracking i havent found them, i found the leader but he wasnt responding, so im waiting.... .... i think i started rambling.... ... .. oh well /shrug.... only if credits could be tracked

Dragonas asked if he was getting a good deal. The simple answer is "are you happy to track for what you are charging"? If the answer is yes, you've got a good deal.

A more convoluted answer is "how much could you realistically expect to earn in that same amount of time by harvesting"? And here it gets complicated as it depends on what weapons level you are, what's in shift, who is buying, etc etc.

Going after Talus avian the last couple of nights I've got a nice little stash put away, I've racked up a shedload of weapons XP and have had the chance to explore a planet that I'd sadly neglected in the past. (Master Ranger with Rifles 3242) I'll be selling my stack on to a doctor later this afternoon and know that I'll be a happy bunny tonight.

I could have gone and tracked, but I was having plenty of fun working the wilderness and tracking for myself.

However, last time there was a good Talus avian shift on I went up and harvest like mad for a couple of evenings, sweated blood and barely got 2k units. The doc I was supplying wasn't over rich (at that point) and we'd come to a part payment / part buffs sort of deal. Worked at the time but I didn't earn THAT much. (Ranger 2-ish, Master Marksan / Novice Rifles)

I could have gone off and tracked for coin and very probably made a lot more, but I'd have been bored to tears after 15 minutes and by the end of the hour I'd have been willing to pay the client to never ever call me again.

Anyhow, am rambling now, but the short short answer is "there is no right answer" just the one that makes you happiest. Is your motivation ingame to a mass a mega fortune? Have the biggest balance on the block? Or to just have fun, earn enough to cover rents and the occaisional spice/twi'lek party? The deal that gets you to your own personal goal is the right one.

(I have to stop meditating at that shrine, it's warping my mind)

Why would I ever consider flaming you for this post? I think you've hit the nail on the head here and I'm gonna give you stars for it. I completely agree here... especially with "doing what makes you happy".
Personally, tracking for others is not a ton of fun for me. I feel inadequate when I don't find stuff (even though I know it's not really my fault) and people often don't like paying 200k per hour... but that's because they don't understand that there is an opportunity cost to tracking.
Anyway, Almagill, you've got some great points here. Well done and thanks for saying it.

...reading this over, it sounds kinda complainy. I don't mean to be that way; sorry for the bad vibe if I put it out there.

Okay, tell me if this is a good deal, or if it sucks.

I have been tracking GDK for two different people. I have been charging/offered 50k per spawn plus 1 mil bonus for any loot found on my spawns.

After reading this post, I have begun to wonder if this is such a godd deal after all. Would like some feed back before I decide to go for an hourly rate. Thanks!
