I've been away for a while, what's going on?

Read the Big Announcement (if you haven't already). We're becoming extinct.

I know about the big announcement ("SW-FPS-G"), but since this thread was specifically targeted at Phenix, I thought I'd missed him making some big annoucnement of his own.

Never mind.

I think the best thing for all of us to do is give it a try. SWG was my first MMO, and I was hesitant about it. I came to love it (and the people I met) over the years. I won't give it up easily, but my sceptical side says that this may be the last straw, which saddens me a lot. Now the testers in Austin have been saying it's fun, but in my mind, simply being fun isn't enough. Is it engaging the way that SWG was for me when I first bought it? I doubt that. What was cool about SWG was the idea that it was so open-ended. You could be a mild-mannered tailor by day, and a rifle-bearing soldier of the Empire at night. That was so cool.

As I've said, I'm going to try it out, as I recommend we all do. But this is the make-or-break change for me, and I don't blame anybody who would decide to leave at this point.

I'm with you Phenix on giving it a try.

One initial concern I have, is about SWG being more FPS like. With turn based games like SWG, PvP was purely based on who could use their skills best, whereas in FPS games it's more who has the best hand-eye coordination, who has the fasted computer, etc. I would be sad for SWG to go that way.

Having said that, the hand-eye coordination side is just how JTL has always been. In fact my first MMORPG ("JumpGate") was similar to JTL, kind of like an online Elite, althogh it had a proper physics engine. So, having a "twitch based" MMORPG isn't that of an alien idea to me.
