Now I will have to check the game out I guess. /grin

After the SWG experience I really was not sure I wanted to for one reason. The time period. Many of the problems we have had with SWG is that it is set in a time period with no Jedi and where there are only so many things you can do before continuity is broken. I didn't like the fact that it was set in LOTR time, because if they want to create a flexible game play experience many huge LOTR fans (and they are equally as rabid and the Star Wars fans) will be screaming about how this isn't middle earthy (I maybe one of them).

Plus, while I love the LOTR times, if I had a choice I would not choose those times to live in. The world is fading, becoming more "normal." The elves are all but passed to the west. The line of great men (Aragorn's decendents) is all but gone. Few Ents roam the forests, and the forest themselves are asleep or dumb. I would much rather they had set the game in the time of the simarillion, when ther elves and the world was young, the dwarves were just reawoken and men were new to the world. Maybe during the first war between Melkor/Morgoth and the other gods. Or when Sauron first turns back to evil before the fall of Numenor. Then you would have a lot of flexibility because that time is only breifly (but vividly) sketched by Tolkein.

ok, dont assualt me here, but:

is the samillirion or whatever, the book Tolkiens son put together after he died, with all of his unpublished work and some of his sons own added content. it was all about the history before "the hobbit" and stuff right?

Yeah the Turbine only have the rights the the 3 lotr books and the bobbit. Everything else including the simarillion arnt included.

Personally i think it was the best choice to base the game in this time. It gives much more sense of living the world you have read or watched being able to play at the same time as frodo and the crew taking the walk. Its the same with star wars, although i would think it would be cool to play back in kotor time in an mmo, i would much prefer the kotor experience in this time line alongside the film story.

The difference between Sony and Turbine and their respective games will be in how they have approached the stories they have liscences for. Sony approached it making a world alongside the films, they make decisions that can be totally against the films just because it wouldnt be fun. This isnt to say it could be done in a cool way and still be fun but faithful to the films its just they choose not to spend to time doing that. The big differences here are that turbine have Tolkien Enterpises working with them on every part of the game, helping them with questions, content direction, feature design and story. That helps so much. If any of you have read the way they have handled the health system then you will appreciate the great legnths they have gone to whilst still not going again lore.

These new changes to swg are great forme and i will love playing this game from now on, but i think that lotro will be a totally different game that will be the most lore appropriate game out there and still being fun for the masses. Ive been following Lotro (formally meo) for around 5 years now through its developement (started following it before id even played an mmo and knew about swg) and the closer we get to 06 the more excited i get. I just wish they would of chosen to flesh out the world more through personalised housing at launch and a very cool world crafting system letting you plant crops and brew ales etc.

Nice idea! And knowing you, I also loved the (longish) disclaimer!

Its fun to realize the impact SWG has had ont he mindsets of gamers - people calling for non-combat classes etc. and citing SWG as an example. I hope someday someone picks up the customizable template idea and runs with it as well.

Yup, there is so much potential out there for more than just combat.

Crafting and Social professions shouldnt just be side gimics or addon's, they should be full fleshed out gamestyles. Now im not talking about cracking out the hawtpants and knocking the enemy dead, but more along the lines of something to do when you just arnt in the mood for combat.

I love combat, dont get me wrong, but i would love to do something extra on those nights where i just question whether i can be bothered or not. Something like planting my next batch of fine hops would be perfect. I know id play to game so much more if i knew i had other things to do besides combat.

Well those of you who have been with us over the years know that I enjoy coming up with ideas. I always thought that SWG was a step in the right direction in terms of gameplay choices. Now one things I always wanted as skill to be more involved. The NGE could potentially do that for combat classes. But, along with a friend of mine who writes a little code, was kicking around some ideas, and we really wish that SWG had created "mini-games". Essentially, these would help flesh out the crafting and entertaining gameplay styles of life. Essentially, rather than popping open a generic crafting tool and letting it do all the work, you'd have to use your skill. The better the skill of the weaponsmith, the better the weapon.

Essesntially, the way we decided that we would have coded it is thusly: you equip your tools, and you get near a workbench- the higher the quality of tools and bench, the higher percentage of the resource stats you use. So if your tools and workbench are rated at a .90,when you went to make repairs during the crafting process, you'dbe less effective. A .50 tool and bench would taketwice as long to repair something as a 1.0 tool (time matters) Resource stats would also be importants, though they'dwork a different way, and I'll get to that. The system would look at these numbers, and feed them into a mini-game. Now this mini-game would be entirely client-side once it started up. You wouldn't be sending info to the server until the game was over.

Essentially, it would also require some skill. You'd have to allocate certain amounts of resources for each part (too much or too little could negatively affect you, and using your tools, refine the shape and repair damages/defects, all on a time limit. You'd have crafter specials during this process, which, when used at the right time, would greatly increase the strength and durability of your weapons. Now, getting back to resources, you'd have to choose wisely in order to perfect your trade. While the skills will play more of a role, resource stats will still count for a lot, but not in the standard way.

Good resources will always matter, but picking your resources is important too. For example, a more malleable metal would make it easier to repair blemishes, but you wouldn't want to put it in a sword, because it would reduce the durability. Also, you wouldn't want to put a hard and brittle (low malleability) into a flame-thrower. Using it with a brittle metal would reduce it's condition faster. So not only does OQ matter, but the secondary stats are more important based on what type of weapon you're creating. A gun that shoots cold blasts needs more cold resistance, lightning weapons need better conductivity, etc. So you really have to think about which metals to use in which guns. Also, certain planets would always have one stat a bit better. For example, Mustafarian metal would be very good for making heat-based weaponry,or heat-protectant armorwhile metal from a colder planet would be very bad for those roles.

That's just how we designed it in our heads though.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

Well said Owen. If they ever implement a brewmaster profession in MEO... I'm TOTALLY there!

Definitely agree w/what you say about non-combat stuff to. With this announcement, I looked at the 9 branches I've unlocked so far for fun and loot, for which I've been oh-so-slowly gathering FS XP (I often cap and forget to turn it in for weeks at a time 'cause I'm busy, ya know... playing). I briefly (For a day) flirted with the idea of trying to make a crazy run for Padawan to get my 2nd slot, but when I sat down for a minute and did the math, and realized I had around 9 days to make 61 trips to the village, do the Mel mission, and ALL the Padawan trials... I just decided that THAT is why I wasn't going for Jedi in the first place, that I play the game to play, not work 7-10 hours a day grinding. If they do decide to let us release and redo professions, or give us all a 2nd slot (and jedi a 3rd) or whatever, awesome. Otherwise, I'm not gonna sweat it. If I find I absolutely need to do something new, and stay on Ahazi... well, I guess I'd gut a 2nd account. Maybe.

So....I went off and have been helping guildies get to CL80 before this hits (most of our combo crafter / combat types, gonig to full combat for the time being so they get the best respec possible), helping them on space missions, and most importantly, helping one of them realize her dream to make a Jedi/Dancer fan video (her 2nd), since it won't be possible to have a hybrid like that after CUII hits. That's probably the most fun I've had in a LONG time, clearing the "set" on Mustafar, helping watch for "bad guys", having a bunch of us coordinate duels with the 2 Jedi/Dancers being filmed so that they could dance with lit sabers... man, what a blast! I'd miss that aspect of the game FAR more than any old"kill X creatures for Y reward" stuff. Non-combat & Social indeed.

That sounds awesome Dekiion! I tried for the last two days to make the run for Padawan so I can have that extra character slot (I too thought I would unlock by laying normally, silly me)... but its not going to happen. I would have to max out my BH weapons xp 3 times a day for 8 days in order to do it. Just not going to happen. I have a feeling the next few days will be spent helping out crafters pick up combat for the same reasons you stated.
