And i think your able to use a CL23 which would give you a creature with 6-9k HAM and high kinectic resists probaly. Talk to your local BE before giving up on the red balls with creatures stuffed inside that you call.

Well, things have changed in 10 months. For instance, if you want to solo enraged rancors, then get buffed, get some 75% kinetic ubese and Novice Entertainer. It's really kind of silly now. There should be some new code so thatwhen a creature sees a player coming up with buffs and armor, the player cons red and aggressive, which causes the creature to run away.

Master Ranger/Master Rifleman is a nifty combo, as you can stay out in the wilds for days.Use food buffs to keep HAM costs down, and use patience when taking down targets and things will go pretty well. I consider it a failure if a creature actually gets close enough to attack me. I don't like damage. Damage bad. Wounds worse.

Personally, I go unbuffed, unarmored, and at the moment I'm only starting my collection of BE clothing - made my guild BE a very happy man with some high OQ milk, meat and hides last night, so he's bumping my priority for some nifty new things. ;-) Ranger / Rifles (not master in either YET). LOTS of concealshot. I'm here for the long game, I don't need millions of credits "right now", I just need to get my dang rifle speed up so for now, "safe" hunting is the way to go. When I get there, I get there. Tho it IS funny that I'll probably finish Frontiering before I finish any of the lines in Rifles....

I use my lil R3 tank (Sparky) who's got ~4500 HAM to just sort of hang around me and then tank if I screw up and actually find myself having to run like the dickens. Mostly I just use camo and maskscent, stay prone, and take my time. I can take down just about anything I want at this point, it just might take a while. And I've got to agree w/JB, anything that lets me use an effective and efficient tank withOUT having tospend skill points gets my vote. I WAS pursuing CH to do Master Ranger / Master Rifles w/some points in CH, until I realized that I could instead do Master Ranger & Rifles, keep Novice Medic + 1 box, and get a decent tank for 0 SP. Now I can heal myself AND my droid, and don't feel as if I've wasted any SP to get into yet another "broken" profession (yes, the 3 profs that most intrest me in the game are Ranger, Squad Leader and CH, probably in that order).

I can say as a pistoleer/ranger Rancors are probably your best friend in terms of higher end harvesting. Ubese is good to get that or some composite if you can find some really good low encumbrance composite. Armor really is way beyond what any of us thought it would be 10 months ago. Same with buffs.

Also, chef foods are very important now too because they got a total revamp. Food and drink are now seperate with a total of "100" filling room in each and your stomach will slowly empty and be totally empty after 45 minutes. So check the filling, food or drink type, and duration.

I recommend

Vasarian Brandy(you can take two of these for about a 45 minute 800+ buff to all mind stats)

Ahrisa(+400 drink buff to focus for 40+ minutes)

Those are good to start with but there are many many more. But those two combined with doc buffs and entertainer buffs(yeah those work well now too.) can keep all your stats high. Mind is *less* important to a pistoleer, but you still want it high.

Also, weapons have changed somewhat on the pistoleer side.

FWG5s can't be made as good as they used to be. So it you have a super krayt FWG5, hang on to it.

Republic Blasters make a good general use energy ap1 weapon. Be sure to nab a good one.

Get a new DX2. They improved the accuracy on new made guns since you left.

And there are now two big guns, thoough expensive because they take loot dropped schematics/components to make:

- A Geo Sonic Blaster. Its ap0 Stun, but unlike the tangle, a good one can have 300+ max damage. So very useful. You need to have Techniques 3 to be certed for it though.

- A DE-10. Think a colt 45 looking gun with AP1 energy but damage on par with, or much higher than the old Krayt FWG5s(ie you can get this guy over 500 damage with good Krayt Tissues). You need master pistoleer to use it though.

On the ranger side of things, not too much has changed. I would definitely get yourself a combat droid with as high a harvesting module as you can get(100+ rating). Then you can use the droid to harvest for you while in combat and it will harvest more than you can do alone. They also make droids with Trap Launchers so that you can have the droid do all the trapping for you.

Also, CHs are very useful still. As I am always partnered with a certain very special BE/CH Natural pets are not as powerful as they once were sadly, but BEs can make some pretty nasty pets.

Welcome back and hope that helps.

Thanks to all. This is all immensely helpful. I had no idea that there were so many new weapons and food items. And droids being effective was a huge surprise to me. Gotta pick one up. Sounds like it is actually EASIER to solo hunt now than it was with creatures. I guess I'll stick to Pistoleer and pick up some new armor and weapons. The Rifleman concept just doesn't appeal to me; waiting 10 minutes to kill one creature might be very effective, but I'd get really bored really fast.
On an unrelated note, there are a crapload of cities now -- too many, in my opinion. But whatever.

yeah....about that.....pistoleers aren't very good against heavily armored critters (believe me, i'm still one, and i just don't have it in me to drop it......)

If you really want to tear up the heavy hitters, get swordsman. My entire guild pretty much went that avenue. They're all picking on me about how im still a pistoleer.

hehe - to piggy-back on another of Fodder's posts, you can also now heal your droid with droid repair kits -- this makes them very useful tanks.

if you go Teras Kasi master, unless you're fighting larger baddies like Rancors, you can go out into the wild buffed and UNARMORED. i do most of my hunting in regular clothing, without armor.

here's what i did:

Migrate all my stats so that all 3 mind pools are maxed. (as a rodian, the max levels are sort of low) then spend most of your other points in the pools that minimize HAM costs of your Health and Action. then divide the rest of the points between the other secondaries and the primaries.

Buffs can now boost your health, action, and secondaries for these 2 pools by up to 2550. Drink 2 vasarian brandies, and eat some Canape or Ahrisa (based on personal preference) and you are now almost unbeatable in the wild.

if you start to get into trouble, hopefully you've got novice medic. then find a doctor that crafts stims, and find some Advanced Stim B's that novice medics can use (they must use experimentation points to drop the medical use on them).

also with Teras Kasi, you can powerboost, which gives all three of your primary pools a bit of a boost.

if i am fighting any really tough critters like enraged rancors, i'll do all the same stuff above, then put on a good suit of 76% - 78% kinetic resist Ubese armor, and i'm all set.

Here's what I did...

  • Mastered Rifleman

  • Dropped all but what is required for MR and MRM.

  • What is left is enough to get CH and 3 boxes in one tree. This allows up to one 19th level pet.

  • Call a BE and have them make you a tank/mount that ether has armor or high kenetic resist. Mine has 49% Kenetic and 35% in a few others (like energy). Also has 2 special attacks.

Set the pet on guard. Anything that aggros gets intercepted long enough to be taken care of. Sure, I can't speed max in every condition, but it's fast enough to hunt with and riding a mount to look for naturals gets me more hide/meat in the end. On a bike running back and forth doing only missions would not get me as much.

I've seen unarmored TKMs tank krayts (well, TKM/Doctors but still). The high unarmed toughness really helps a ton. But you still need the buffs for anything big.

I'm learning that very quickly. I've actually kinda gotten into the swing of things. Bought me a nice set of Ubese armor, some good brandy, a few new pistols, and found out that Coronet sucks for getting buffs (like 10 minute waits). Dantooine seems to be the best place to hunt these days; at least, I encounter a heck of a lot more people there than on any other higher-level planet. And the new strategies I'm using seem to be more effective there than on Dathomir, my old favorite planet.

Man, I wish I'd never stopped playing this game! I love the experience of running out into the wilderness and hunting for hours.

Oh! Random question. I remember at the end of 2003 the Bounty Hunters and Pistoleers were bitching back and forth constantly about which is and should be more powerful. It got quite obscene. How'd that turn out? Did one or the other get nerfed? It seems to be a non-issue now.
