Thread: rescue
"I've used it, but I don't really see what it's for besides the creature attacking me as opposed to someone else."
That is actually the exact purpose of /rescue.
- Using the command is supposed to draw the aggro off the target and onto you, hopefully long enough for your target to escape.
Most players consider it a death wish to use the command...
- But protecting the one person that can Revive me after I die is a prime reason to use the skill.

----
Being Melee does help of course, as I can tough out a lot of close range damage before dying...
- The command is not for everyone.

"I've never, ever gotten /rescue to work when I'm not holding a ranged weapon."
The main issue with /rescue is that the Ranger must engage the aggros before their attention reverts back to the victim.
In order to do that, the Ranger must damage the aggros...
- Meaning if you are a melee fighter you must be near enough to actually do some damage (with a Ranged weapon it is simple enough to shoot the beast from any distance).
It is also a good idea for the victim to run behind the Ranger after the command is performed, as the beast may decide to re-aggro its nearest target.
/rescue simply isn't the greatest skill to use out in the wilderness on other players who are unfamiliar with the mechanics of the command. First, the person you are trying to /rescue needs to lay on the /peace command. I have a system worked out with my friends for when they get in trouble. They know to hit the /peace command and run my way. I have a simple macro set up for doing /rescue.
/yell Hit the /PEACE command and I'll /RESCUE you!
/rescue
However, it is tough to try and target a player who isn't in your group. The /rescue command works a ton better when you can just alt-select a person in your group.
Teranus,
Please read my post that is right above yours. Yes, you do have to target the player you would like to rescue. Yes, the creature will more than likely keep attacking the person you are trying to rescue if that person keeps attacking the creature. Like I said, the person you are trying to rescue needs to lay on the /peace command for best results. Hope it helps :-)

You use rescue, it works, and while you're fighting 2 ancients off with your rifle at 0m, tossing traps until carpal tunnel kicks in, a nightsister stabs you in the back and blows up your bike.

All our abilities should be useful to some sup group of us, but they cannot all be useful to all of us. They should work however, so add it to the list with foresting.
