meh. I don't think borrowing good ideas is a bad thing. Which game introduced the concept of controling pets? Which game introduced the concept of mounts? It wasn't WoW. So technically, anything that they do with pets is a result of borrowing from other people. Every MMO borrows good ideas and put them into their own system. and every RPG that uses a d20 system is borrowing off of pen-and-paper games, so I really don't think we should worry about where stuff came from, just see if it works well and if it's balanced.

But when is it too much? The more you take from other games, the more all games become the same .

I believe I've heard people say that Invisibility was a skill way back in Ultima Online. And of course they borrowed it from D&D anyway, which is probably 50 years old.

- I would prefer original ideas over borrowed ones.
- I would prefer fun ideas.
- I need attention paid to bug fixes and functioning systems.

I'll take the latter two points even if they have to copy it from other games. SWG still has enough original ideas, and iterations of old ideas, to be considered unique. (A rant on copying but not implementing them well is subject for another post...)

Course you know imitation is the sincerest form of flattery ;-)

As far is how much is too much.. I dont know the answer to that but if something works well and the players like it and it fits, why not use it? Re-inventing the wheel just for the sake of saying "I invented that" is silly (and I daresay SWG stumbled greatly because it over-reached in terms of inventevness. yes they had some of the most promising MMO play systems around BUT it would seem those promising systems were too complex to release in a timely fashion and were to complex to implement and maintain later and the game suffered as a result of the incompleteness of the orginal design.)

Sadly in the gaming industry and every other entertainment industry, copy-cats each other like crazy..this is good and bad..good because cross-pollenating ideas is a good thing but the bad side is if the idea works then everyone uses it and other sutdios become loathe to try and do something 'out of the box' They would rather wait for some kind of established feature to emerge rather than take the risk and develop the feature themselves.

Thats why it takes forever to see trly different or innovative things reach the public eye. Too many people taking the 'safe' approach. (again its balance because if you are talking LOTS of money, investors dont care for recklesness.)

Glad CH's got help, this definately will make them amazingly fun to play, but why do I feel like we're still in the middle of the Combat Upgrade server downtime waiting for fixes on everything in the game to update?

Entertainers needed changes
Creature Handlers got broken
Squad Leaders still don't have the benefits they need
Most of Jedi Healer is useless apparently
BE's are going to need a publish to fix the pets they make
the spawning system is still a mess
And smugglers still aren't smuggling

I'm sure there's more. Maybe Ranger just isn't happening anytime soon. Shoot, I'd be happy if the adhesive mesh worked and came in a stack bigger than my johnson.

CH is gonna be a heck of a lot of fun after this.

I will be a total.. hypocrite? and say I like copycattting when I like the results and I hate it when I don't like the results.

I hate the fact SWG has adopted that MMORPG Modeless way of navigating and made it the default for all new players (the tutorial even instructs based on it now). The SWG one is soooooo much better. On the other hand, if WoW decided to adopt the (original) SWG way of navigating I wouldn't complain at all!

When I first tried EQ and WoW I thought they were pretty stupid for not using the vastly superior method of navigating that SWG had created... boy do I feel silly now.

Great news for CH. Like Phen i dont mind at all when good ideas are shared/borrowed/stolen. Like the rest xp system in wow. It took bliz to have the balls and show that mmos can be for casual gamers not looking for a 2 year investment and bow did they do it right. A month or two later EQ2 adds it

Wow's hunter pet system is very robust and works well, the only problem is with the lack of abilities you can learn from pets giving you a very bland combat pallette. I know its only early days but by the sounds of it there are a few good abilities out there that should work well.

On keymaps ive always used mmorpg mode but the eq mode without chase cam on (essentially COH mode and much like EQ2 but without free mouse. I thought the old swg control method was great until i played coh and ive never gone back since.

This looks like a TON of work went on for it before it got this far and it's finally rolled out to the CHs from seemingly thin air (like many changes recently ie slicing entertainer etc). Makes you wonder what else they have under their sleeves or is stuff like this just a cookie to make us think they have something under their sleeves for someone else?

Conspiracy theory FTW.

(Lol! So do you think borrowing us good or bad? )

Good for the CH's. Lots of people need fixes/work, and at least some people are getting them.

And BioEngine, as for "What happened to the Smuggler/Ranger/Squad Leader, revamps in that order?"(lol...sorry, I don't know how to quote).......LIES!

What more did you expect?

im not sure what the exact changes to ch are but as a ch, which i have been since i started i must say that i am glad that a new venue of oppurtunity has opened to the poorly respected proffession, most people seem to not look highly to creature handler until they need a pet tamed, trained, mounted, or named.

also, i dont feel that it is wrong to get ideas from other games as long as it makes the game more enjoyable which is what people pay for, they buy the game to have fun and any good change that is made i dont think should be scrutinized unless it is majorly morally wrong, which this idea is not. as a master ch i must say that i thank the devs for making my hard work a little more worthwhile.

thanks
