I just posted this exact statement in another post, and I will do so again. I dont want to get into a semantic argument about "saving" or other synonyms. However, the ranger skill set boils down to this in my opinion:

We have a skill that work without bugs: TN
We have skills that work, but are bugged: Traps, areatrack, camps, camo, maskscent
We have skills that work but could be sooo much better: Traps, areatrack, camps, camo, rescue, harvesting, maskscent, TN (actually, all of our skills)
We have skills that work but some find too expensive in skill points to be really useful: traps, rescue, camo, camps

IMHO, we Rangers now get a C-/ D+ in terms of functionality, and relative skillpoint vs. perk status. With the outdoorsman (if implemented) I think that that would give us an A-. We are useful, somewhat effective, yet sorely under-skilled for the amount of points that we have to spend to attain master status.

People from Thunderheart on down agree that Rangers have a weak skillset, I know it, you know it. However, I disagree that we are broken, all we can do right now is point out what skill is broken, bugged or ineffective, and work on bringing up new ideas like you did Goldmember, submit it to peer review, beat it around for debate and refinement and then add it to our wishlist/ SoP. Eventually, (soon I hope) Rangers will get some attention and be added to a publish before too long.

Besides, with all the weak skillsets, I still have a lot of fun playing my Ranger and I do really well with it.

If I were to name ONE thing that would greatly help the Ranger tree, it would be a Combat tree. Even a basic shot or two and a few rifle certifications. But please, give us SOMETHING to hunt with. I'm a 4,1,2,4 Ranger with a bunch of Doctor skills. I'm awesome in a group (rez, maskscent, healing, camo, tracking) but am completely useless on my own. I carry around a Nym's Slugthrower (no cert required) for basic defence, but that doesn't help at all if I get aggroe'd by anything more powerful than a gnat.

I also think that a rifle would be the best weapon for Rangers, and makes a bit more sense than a pistol or a carbine.

Good idea Irasha

but that would alienate the melee rangers as does the +to hit for ranged only modifier in the tracking tree.

I agree to improve ranger, but not at the cost of forcing me into a specific weapon.

thats my only critisism

I agree with you wholly. The reason I propose rifles is because they kind of make sense (how many people hunt with pistols IRL? I know it can be done, but come on...) and I see it as the simplest way for them to implement combat for Rangers.

I agree Agon. I thinkI may have possibly been vague in the past few posts I have done (especially my critical analysis), but I don't think we are broken, just underpowered as it were.

I do agree, and there are a lot of other rangers who do too, there is a natural synergy between rifleman and ranger. I have yet to try it. I was a master pistoleer, TKM, and now im having a great time with swordsman...(Ive never seen a RL hunter knockdown and dizzy a deer btw..if I have, im sure I would still be laughing about it

I think that the ranger combat skills should come in the form of

  • Disease/ Poison Resists
  • Trap Launcher/ Bow
  • Creature Critical Hit
  • Creature Damage Mitigation
  • Creature Dodge
  • Bonus to hit apply with melee and ranged fighting
  • Better and more lethal traps

This way, this benefits the entire ranger community rather than separating the ranged/ melee rangers.

Thanks again for your post...you made me think

Excellent ideas. This is exactly the kind of stuff we need.

I would not mind a leetle additional PvP functionality, as suggested in the Outdoorsman proposal, but I think our best bet for improvement is the creature-centric angle.. not to mention my personal preference.

BTW, my guild-assigned title is Outdoorsman. How cool is that?

The majority of these have been posted, though more specifically, in one of the Sticky posts.

    Pvp traps: ones that preset.

And for tracking? dude, dont leave it how it is, Move around harvesting points at LEAST. I mean come on, its easy as heck to just dabble in that and outdo a ranger with all the other tiers, even with these ideas added. I can already kill anything I want to.

    heheh

I would never leave areatrack as it is. My point in this particular post is focusing on the combat angle of the Ranger.

Good point Dwolfe. PvP viability needs to come into play as well.

I don't want Ranger to be merely a slightly better Scout. Rangers need more than just a harvesting bonus. They need skills that differentiate them from Scouts. It needs to be worth the skill points to become a master.

There are many good ideas in this post as well as in the Outdoorsman proposal. There are literally hundreds of good ideas that have already been posted in the Ranger forums. The devs just need to start working on it. It seems like they are revamping 1-2 professions per publish. Hopefully it will be the Ranger's turn soon.
