heres my 2 credits

Ithink it should be called a trap gun, since it will deliver whatever charge you select. The charges could be anything within the scout trapline, since it sounds like all the effects people are asking for fall in that group. The gunshould be far more effective then any thrown trap and the range would exceed any thrown trap (max 50m, from my trap throwing experience). This would make it a more worth while skill to obtain. I think by calling it a rifle you make it sound like it only belongs to one class. Not every one hunts with a rifle, trapo gunmakes it sound more PC (politically correct). Though I do the guass rifle idea.

If theywent with a bow, I think it should be a compound bow. It sounds more high tech and they are compaired to a tradition bow.

On topic, I did the list. Would like to know if the To hit modifier is applicable to melee attacks. To Continue with the psyudo off topic discussion, I think the damage bonus vs creatures would be better. This shows hunting skill improvement overall, I alsobelieve it ties in with the knowlege of animals, their behaviors, and anatomy. Poisons, they might be kinda neat but that is the combat medics thing, being able to harvest poisons to give to combat medics for more powerful components, that might be good. If you are talking about a special thing for us to use to hung. How about a silencer. Produceable by us for wepons. Granted this may do nothing for me as a melee class but it would give something special without giving us a "ranger" weapon. This may be more likely than a special rifle, pistol, carbine, because it is one item instead of multiples. It also is less likely to obscure the line betweenrangers and combat classes.

The gauss rifle idea has a special place. I love these thing, built one as a science project(very basic one) Gauss rifle, aka rail gun. Nearly unlimited straight line range(depending on power of gun). Amazing armor pirecing capability Ex: The one they were testing for the space program sent a 5 gram lexan disk with a nickle iron rod for the magnet into a 2 ton pendulum and swung the pendulum 15 feet. The impact target was a 8- 10" block of aircraft aluminum( this was used because the maiablility helped absorb some of the impact). The projectile went 75% of the way through the material and produced a rather large goose egg on the back side. At this point it may seem like a great weapon. Maybe- awsome straight flight path, huge damage, super heavy equivelent of armor piercing( could be better if the rod was depleted uranium or starwars equivelent coated with nickle steel. This would make it a sabot round. I can explain this later if needed. But they are huge. In Starwars universe, not a big deal, I mean they have lightsabers after all, beam of coherent light and all, power supply is the size issue and this isn't a problem for us. The problem is noise. They are the noisyiest thing you could imagine. The reason they are so cool, so powerful is the projectiles travel at super-hypersonic speeds. Now this would make them the ultimate one shot kill weapon explainable in three words....SONIC BOOM CONE. The cone would start to form part way down the barrell. (current problem with high power portables, barrells blow-in starwars not an issue). Jump ahead past the fact that every on the planet now knows where you are, and that you might dizzy yourself for 5 to 10 seconds form this, this would solve the power to cycle time ration however, you hit your target, how can you not? You could even setup fiberoptic sighing down the barrell assuming the boom cone didn't shatter the optics and the fiber that is. All you have left is a big blood colored puff. The cone would anilalate the beast. We could scoup up goo. But the bigger issue(in RL not SWG) is that this is the weapon that shoots through the bad guy, the guild hall, that broken down land speeder in the front yard, the poor bantha herder on his mount and the landing shuttle back in town. Now in all these instances you have huge fatalities. The cone would at least incap if not kill everyone in the guild hall, the bantha herder of course, and the sudden massive change in pressure would not only kill every on in the shuttle but cause it to blow up too. But only if they did it right.

Really though the only thing in the last part of the description that applies is that it would be really really really loud.

In the Traveller game system they solved the noise problems by toning down the power scope. the weapon launches projectiles at near sound barrier speeds. But it does not create any sonic boon or send projectiles faster then the speed of sound. the trade off was for a very quiet weapon with less power then what you are describing with your real model Rail gun.

[disclaimer] this is just my humble opinion.

As a few including myself have pointed out, no other class has a self crafted special weapon. While it is quite conceiveable that we could craft this weapon, it is also concievable that we could craft simple survial knives or 1/4 staffs. Both of those items are crafted by WS or artisians currenlty.I do not think they will allow us to craft any weapon period, including the bow. In fact the insistance on this may well be the part of the proposal that keeps the devs from ever implementing it. I do think they might be aggreable to letting us craft the arrows or projectiles. Or a power up that makes the gun produce special effects for a set # of shots. Like one of our fellow rangers mentioned further up the thread. I really like the idea of the weapon which ever it in fact becomes. To be useable as novice ranger and improve with advancement in the profession.

Only avialable to a Master Ranger a Pistol/rifle/carbine hybrid with a folding stock, stock wouldn't be used with pistol, the ammo could be harvested in diff types. such as, Heat/cold/acid/energy. a combo of harvested resources from creatures and minerals and chem. Just an idea.

The ammo could be used like a powerup 100% with experimentation on effectiveness or just like a trap no experimentation, it just does dmg. based on the guns stats min-max dmg. spd. etc.

I don't remember that thread but I gladly turn the credit over to whomever thought of it first

Just a thought on expanding that idea. The gun could be like a fishing pole you basicly drop items in and they disappear as they are spent. You could also mix or match the shells that you put in and the order that they are used depends on what was putin the gunfirst. Set the max number of shells to say 5 or 6. Shell construction could be one addition schematic called "shell casing". You could simply combine and shell casing and a existing trap to make the final shell.

10+ metersis not much but it would be nice to have. Accuracy and effectiveness only would make it worth it

I like the rail gun idea and the compound bow idea, but I like the rail gun better, as it is more technological in my mind. Just a quick thought, perhaps the rail gun could shoot low-powered, non-status-affecting shells when we have no ammo, and then if you wanted to increase the damage of the shot or if you wanted to add a status affect (read: poison), the ranger could craft a rail-gun specific powerup with charges on it, similar to the scope or muzzle. We could gain new powerup schematics as we go up the ranger tree, making it possible to use the gun at low levels, but making it more powerful and versatile the higher up the profession we go. I also think the rail gun should not depend on other weapon professions like rifle or pistol or melee, so that all rangers could use it. Either weapon should be craftable by weaponsmiths only, no other combat class can craft their own weapons. Rangers would be the only ones to make the powerups though.

Thanks for reading, and sorry if this has been suggested before.

I think I like the bow idea more and more.

Here is my dream scenario for their implementation:

Compound Bow: Advanced delivery system for Ranger only "traps"

  • Crafted by Rangers at Advanced Trapping I

  • Frame crafted from Bone, Wood, or Inert Petrochemicals (plastics). Cams crafted from Metal. Strings crafted from woven Hide.

  • Does a minimal amout of base damage, but instead relies on status effects.

  • Staus effects work on creatures and humanoids (NPC's and Players) alike.

  • Is loaded with speacial arrows in the same manner fishing poles are loaded with bait.

Specialty Arrows:

  • Crafted and Certified by Rangers at various levels up the Advanced Trapping line.

  • Arrows effects include many of the Scout trap effects as well as many Ranger only effects:

    • Poison Arrows: No initial damage, but applies a small DoT to random HAM pool as well as possible status effects (dizzy, blind, vomiting)

    • Serrated Arrows: No initial damage, but applies a large DoT to random HAM pool.

    • Weighted Blunt Arrows: Low initial damage, but applies a long term stun effect.

    • Explosive Arrows: Advanced Trapping IV or Master Ranger. Heavy damage delivered to all within asmall area. Requires parts created by Weaponsmiths.
