TKA's were briefly mentioned in one of thefirst Star Wars RPG's (mid 80's I think) as being the 'checks and balance' to the Jedi in the Old Republic. They trained on a certain planet (still researching for my bio) and were known only to themselves. It was a mysterious order, not in the public eye like the Jedi. Their missions were their own and they were not appointed or hired by anyone outside the order.

When the Jedi were hunted down, TKA's went into hiding as they were found out and hunted as well. Their training facilities were destroyed and the organization was thrown into chaos.

That's about all I know. I played Star Wars, Traveler and a few other RPG's when I was younger, so it comes from memory. I haven't seen TKA's referenced in any Star Wars books, but like you I'm not well-read in the expanded universe. If someone knows more information, please feel free to add.
