Thread: To Macro Or Not The Evil Wilderness XP Rant

This is in response to all the people who are calling for a shutdown of macroing.

Downin the Scout Forums everyone is complaing about Scout Camps.. and how much XP you need to get to Master Scout... but is just gets WORSE as a Ranger!!!

In order to get to Master Ranger, you have to achieve AN ADDITIONAL 200,000 wilderness survival experience.

If you do the math with a basic ranger camp at maximum usage of 1100 experience per camp... thats 182 camps!!!

In order to get maximum usage you have to spend up to AN HOUR in each camp doing jack squat!!

Are you trying to tell me that I should be forced to sit and watch my screen for 182 hours just so that I can get the xp I need for my Ranger Tree???? That's just BS. In order to make Master Ranger (big whooptedoo btw)... I have to max out this camping crap. Just so I can make Master Ranger... good point.. why even bother... Master Rangers are a joke ... why am I even trying... <shakes head in confusion>

I don't think Macroing is the best solution... but until they fix the xp requirements on camping or lift the no-combat, no leave requirements, I feel its the ONLY way I can gain xp in the skills my character needs to play and still enjoy this game. I'm not going to pay for an entire months subscription just so I can sit there all month in a stupid boring non-interactive camp while I'm not allowed to engage in combat nor leave the perimeter just so I can progress my character.

That would be like an artisan being FORCED to sit near a crafting station AND NOT CRAFT for 182 hours just to get up enough xp to use a factory. Thats how ludicrous it is.

It would be like a Marksman being forced to sit in a room and look at a Laser Carbine for 182 hours while doing nothing else, just so he can be certified to use it. Thats how ludicrous it is.

Everyone keeps saying... "Use Camps the normal way... just gain xp using camps the way they were intended."

Lets just do some analysis of that...

I DO use camps for healing and for pulling out Droids... which is an intentional use of camps. However, to heal, I only need 5 minutes in a camp... to pull out a Droid I only need 1 minute... DO YOU REALIZE THAT IF YOU ONLY SPEND 5 MINUTES IN A CAMP YOU ONLY GET -= ZERO to 80 XP?????? (not to mention that if you make camps right after another, you get 0 xp for them)

SO hmmm.. lets see... at that rate.... it would only take me...2500 camps!!! WOOT!!! That sounds reasonable... Lets see... I need to heal about 2 times a day when I'm playing... so I should be able to make Master Ranger sometime in 2007!!!! (provided I played everyday and SWG Galaxies is even around then)

Now tell me... Do you really feel sitting still in front of your computer for 182 hours doing NO OTHER USEFUL ACTION is the way we should be forced to do it?

Get Real.... put on some Ranger shoes for a while and see how it feels.

ps.. I know that you're going to point out that if you heal or have visitors or whatever you can reduce the camp time requirement for max xp... but imho the only way to make that viable is to allow us to build camps CLOSER TO TOWN so we can get more newbs in the camps for us to take care of... as a general point, you are going to be sitting in your camp SOLO for an hour to get the 1100 (or 1140 if you're lucky).

SoE swore up and down that they would not create the downtime issues in SWG that we had with EQ. It is in their blood, though, and they cannot help iot. These developers love downtime. they love to find out just how long people will sit and do nothing.

EQ refernce.. remember raster camps?

This follows their trend to the tee. I dont care if somebody likes it or not, I am macro'ing my way though the 182 hours of camping. If the developers decide to nerf this, then I will abandon my goal of master ranger and all of its perks.. (there were supposed to be perks right?)

If you are a "purest" and want to go through it all by yourself, enjoy yourself

one hour? Maybe I am showing my ingnorance, but doesnt it max out at 30 mins?

If not, what is the max per camp?

I have been getting 1100 per each High Quality Camp I have been using (about 30 mins a pop solo).

Larger camps. He means the larger ones a Ranger and Master Scout can make. Those have higher limits but it takes a single person much longer time to hit that limit.

Ranger is not a profession. It's a lifestyle.

I get about 1k exp per 15 min...which is 4 times better then the orignal poster, is that good enough, shrug dunno...seems sucky way to advance a skill I can tell you that.

I might get flamed here but I have a question.

Why not just play the game and not worry about gettng Master Ranger in two weeks.

The way I see it, aside from getting the Novice Ranger requirements out of the way, Wilderness Survivial is not critical to gameplay or even enjoying the game.

That being the case just take the experience when you can get it and down the road you will eventually get Master Ranger. In the mean time just enjoy the game and quit worrying about a stupid title.

My characters title is Hunter and that is what my characters title will be no matter what professions I master. Why you might ask. Well that is because my character concept is a hunter pure and simple, that is what he does and always will do. Other than that, this is a skill based game and titles mean absolutely nothing in the grand scheme.

I agree with Taragin.. don't worry about it.. it will come with time!

One trick I have learned to getting more XP out of camps is to find a crowded spot (I used the tusken raiders) and setup a camp there for your group... One evening, I was in a group of 20 at the tusken raiders... With people being healed in the camp I was able to disband my camps every 3 to 4 minutes for FULL EXP!

In the course of that night I wound up getting about 15,000 camping xp!

Its easy if you just have abit o' patience!

I'm just trying to call attention to the fact that the way camping is designed to function in the course of normal play in the ranger class does not equate to normal skill advance.

If I only camp when I "need" to... then my camping is very minimal as I rarely "need" to camp. I agree that you can get good camp xp if all you do is set up camps where groups are fighting... but I do not consider this a "normal" play behavior for a Ranger. According to SOE Rangers are supposed to be Travelling, Tracking, and Defending Others in Combat... which to me does not mean.... sitting by keeping the campfire stoked while others duke it out... that sounds more like a doctor.

So if I'm only camping when I personally need to camp in order to lick my wounds and provide a safe haven while exploring, I'm not going to sit there for a 20 minutes nor am I going to have a bunch of people having a party in the camp... thus my xp growth is going to be very minimal over time...

I guess my gripe also contains this subgripe... the normal play behavior of a Ranger does not equate to going out and making camps all over the place. If I wasn't trying to get camp xp... how many camps would I actually make? The only reason I make them now is to get camp xp so Ican have better looking camps (ego I guess)... so I guess I'm just not seeing how high level camps should be a huge time suck for playing a Ranger as camps aren't really that useful for Rangers in their current state.

If I had to suggest ways to fix this, I'd make it so that I can do more things around my camp... let me tan hides... let me hunt and get a bonus for how much stuff I trapped near my camp... let me make combat bunkers.. let me set up camps near newby hunting areas so they can learn how to benefit from camps... as it is now... players running around the fields have no reason to stop and sit in a camp... oh sure.. they LOVE to run through them.. say hi... say "Hey cool camp"... but thats about the extent of what most people view camps as... (I dounderstand that there is a small contingent of groups that actually use camps for benefit but this isn't the norm).

Thus my argument that trying to achieve Master Ranger status is currently hindered by this whole wilderness survival issue of camps and the fact that camping is just not what it should be in its present state... and until its fixed... I"m not going to spend any more time sitting in a camp just to get xp for it. I will use it as intended when I need to... but thats very rarely at present.

Thank you, Taragin. Why does everybody want to solve this game in one month. This isnt Duke Nukem where you finish the game and never play again.

We are here to live in the Star Wars Universe for years to come. If thats not what you want then your playing a game that doesnt fit your needs. Stop whinning and realize this isnt the game for you.

For you it might be about the journey, for me its about the goal.

And I will be macroing tonight. I'm timing how long it takes a High Quality Camp Kit to dissapear right now.
