Thread: Ranger harvesting Miners? A new skill for rangers..A better idea..

  • Our mainstay is the same as the Scouts: Harvested Resources. In this area, we would love to excel far beyond the Scouting profession, but at the moment most rangers don't feel the harvesting skill is sufficiently different from our Scouting brethren.

  • Not to sure if this was mentioned in any other post....but what if?

Rangers can plant traps on a specific world to capture specific animals. To harvest specific materials from them.

For example you want nabooian wooly......you would plant a harvestor on naboo to specific give off phermones (this can be crafted similar to BER on miners) of Peko-Peko's and you leave the trap on naboo and then in a few days you collected the animals...and have their resources in the machine.

Now to prevent placing static harvestors...have a ranger to have a lvl 10 pet trained to sniff out a specific spot (maybe area track can be involved with this) to place their Harvestors down...and then it can shift like regular resources.

Get rid of Wayfair and place surveying for resources or add it to that tree......and with the creature harvesting tree you can place bigger and bigger traps...while master ranger can place the biggest traps therefore collecting the most animal resources.......

Rangers will be the richest profession...because armorsmiths and doctors will pay for the resources and so would tailors and smugglers and any other profession that needs meat, bone or hide.

Its a a great idea however, scout that make their money off the same resources.....well you get that now with resource collecting anyway.....

I can see all over Endor huge net machines collecting animals in the nets and slicing them inside a big machines...Why not.....I mean we have traps that do it on this world....I do like the Phermone idea.

Sounds good, I guess it would be a good way to supplement the harvesting of materials. But in order to not flood the economy with hides and such there would need to be a decrease in the amount that could be harvested off of a dead creature. This might take some of the fun out of big game hunting.

Similar ideas have been brought up before, and if I remember correctly, most of the folks on this board turned them down because they just don't fit into the kind of playstyle most of us that joined ranger enjoy. Basically, most of us don't want to be the organic equivalent of Artisans, we want to actually hunt and kill the creatures we harvest. Any attempt to add any kind of harvestor-type trap would probably make a pure hunter obsolete: its the same reason most of us disagreed with a bio-engineer farm. At least, this is my understanding of what I've read, I could be completely off base here (I don't want to pretend I'm speaking for everyone )

Also, I'd rather see wayfairing improved and have stealth emphasized in it as opposed to scrapping it for this idea. If we're going to scrap a line for something new, I vote to scrap the trapping line, as it is currently useless in my opinion.

Even though I have to respectfully disagree with this idea, I'd like to thank you for taking the time and effort to write it up. Its always good to have constructive discussions about well-thought-out ideas.

    Yea, I would hate this.

I go out to yavin, mask my scent (still low level) and hunt down my wooly hide for hours on end.

OR I can place a 'harvestor'/trap to do it for me?

Wow, I can set my Mamien catcher, and only have to play when resources shift....

    No

Here, here. I can say I have not thrown a trap since I hit Master. Except for a wire mesh trap when I was working my way to TKM after I dropped pistoleer.

    "Not thrown a trap..."

Your loss. I use traps all the time. Your lack of use tells me you are the buffed and armored 24/7 hunter. Me, I use traps to slow and drop resistances, and when I work it right I am dropping level 40+ creatures without taking a hit. And not spending money on buffs and armor either.

As to the "static trap" - what fun is that? I want to mine stuff, I will go artisan. Oh wait, I already mine stuff, with no artisan. And a pain in the butt it is too, feeding power and maintenance to the machines. Nah--- I want hides, I will harvest them.

THere could be a decrease in the amount of materials taken off a creature as someone said....but you have to find the area where to set up your traps...which can take a while.

Instead of taken 101 wooly off a Gurreck you take only like 20 or so.....but you can also limit the lvl of the creature taken in the trap.

    For each lvl.

Lvl 1 trapping 0-10 lvl of creature

    Lvl 2 trapping 10-15

    lvl 3 trapping 16-20

    lvl 4 trapping 20-30

master trapping 35........so this stops around the same lvl as Graul Maulers or MT squills.

In this case you wouldnt be able to trap Gurrecks.

Rangers hunt like this all the time in RL...... They look for clues and they set up traps, they come back a week later and see if their trap capture anything.

This still leaves big game hunting alone...you still need to hunt for Thunes and such.

I have to disagree with the idea of "planting" trap harvestors. This just takes the fun and excitement out of the profession. Ya wanna set up harvesters to do your workgo Artisan, let us Rangers have our fun.

Also I agree with JB. never use traps?!

I don't understand how Rangers come here and say they don't use traps because they don't work. Do you understand each ones purpose for what you are trying to achieve? I use traps all the time. I would like to hear from the ones that say "traps don't work" and find out what you are trying to trap and how you are using them. I don't have a problem with them and I am sure that alot of others don't either.

Thats where you are wrong, please dont jump to judgement. I never buff, only for PvP, and never wear armor. The ...what two...traps we get are IMHO useless to my combat class. NowI can see where they would be useful if I was a pistioleer where I have to shock then slow the animal, but I shock then with my fists and my 'crowd control' is my warcry and knock down.

The other lines I do find useful. I always camp, tracking is something I cannot live without, and there is nothing like the burstrun of a Master Ranger.

I use traps all the time, its just that the only ones I use are Scout traps. The two ranger traps are not nearly as useful as the Scout traps. I'd prefer that Ranger trapping be improved and enhanced (see Outdoorsman proposal), but since this particular proposal is suggesting a trapping system (which again, I don't support), it would make more sense to put it in the existing underdeveloped trapping line than to scrap Wayfairing. Thats all I was trying to say in my previous post, although I obviously wasn't clear enough.

I rarely use traps because they don't work well enough. They do work but only 80% of the time on the big stuff. If I rely on traps to save me then I will end up dead largely because of the root effect when throwing. If I have an 80% chance to hit a creature with my trap or a 95% chance of using suppression fire and the suppression fire doesn't root me, which do you think I am more likely to try? Now that I have almost no combat skills, the situation should be different. But the suppression fire still is more effective because I don't need to stop moving. And it works on NPCs. If I throw a trap and miss, the animal will close on me. I can spam suppression fire until it works. I do know how to use traps effectively. I just can't survive when I miss.
