They do actually work to heal wounds up as long as you don't let them get too bad.
For the life of me, why keep CH??
Most useless profession, unless you master it, there is. Ok, most useless combat support profession - I can think of a few worse jobs.
1. Most creatures do kinetic damage. Most large creatures that you want to hunt have kinetic resistance.
2. Droids take 0 skill pts to use, can fight, can tank, and some self repair - (my next major purpose). Oh, damages vary - depends on the droid or something (so not a DE) but one of mine does electrical.
3. Pets drag down your mission levels. Unless you have a couple/three uber pets out, mission levels actually go down. Wait, only masters can have more than one pet out. D'oh.
Minimize time on target by maximizing damage. Minimize expenses to maximize profits. The less time you spend killing a lair = more missions per session, and spending less money for mission prep = max profits. Healing helps me stay out there fighting too.
I don't even have to buff to hunt torturs (7k missions at the nearby town with improved job market) when I use my droid. I can drop 3 torturs, one wave, in one minute. The entire mission takes maybe 5 minutes, not counting travel. 1k hide per mission. I usually do 6 missions - 3 sets, in a half hour/45 minutes. 42k creds, 6k of hide/bone/meat for sale at 2cpu minimum - 3 droid batteries (250credits for 4) - 2 power ups (250 total creds) = call it 55k profit.
Oh wait, I may heal myself a few times - but the stims are low priced - call it 5k - so I make 50k in an hour. Not bad pay.
Your call. I would drop CH like a hot potato and keep medic.

For me, I think CH dabbling is probably the best choice. I have enough skill points for CH 0/0/0/3, Marksman level 4 in a weapon, or Novice <Insert profession here> (and possibly a level 1 skill). CH is the only one that really seems to make sense. I can have a CL 19 pet, a droid, and a faction pet all out at the same time (taking my mission levels up to what I was able to get solo as a Master Rifleman). And they almost certainly let me kill more than I would be able to with any other combo. Yes, I suck at combat. But I don't think CH is useless to everyone.

The best thing about pets as compared to droids is that they have very low maintenance costs. With good kinetic resist and light armour, you can have several and keep swopping them when they get so damaged that they might flee or get incapped.
For harvesting, a pet + pistoller fan shot is awesome. We are talking carnage in double time. The pet does no damage he does however have many mobs beating on him that I can them take down at the same time.
I am going Master Ranger, Master Pistoller and CH 3/0/0/0. Gonna buy me some kickass BE'd pets up to level 19and away I will go.
Another good thing about fighting with pets is that I need no buffs and can get away with no armour, although I do wear ubese alot these days.
I can solo about anything I chose to. No, not the uber krayts, or the Peko Alb, I am not that stupid - well wait, yes I am... I tried and got my butt handed to me, but I learned.
I am still firmly in the droid camp. As a pistoleer (Master) and a Master Ranger - and yes, there is a difference in the masters, notice which is capitalized - I use the droid as a shooter/tank, I trap and shoot, and a lot of things get harvested. My time on target for a tortur lair is now about 5 minutes, from 1st shot on target 1 thru target 9 and lair destruction as I walk off. The droid does help.
Maintenance - I get cheap batteries, there are two master DEs in my guild, and while I pay for my droids, maintenance is about free.
Pets on the other hand, would use points I could be using for pistols or medic.
Anyhew - no pets thank you very much. I am sticking to droids.
Besides, pets can't have storage and a built in craft station.
