Thread: Making use of Ranger camps/traps...
I dont know if this has been brought already or not, but I'll ask... Why is it that only scouts/rangers that have sufficient camping skill can USE particular camps? Shouldnt it be just like any other crafting skill where the skill only applies to the actual making of the product, but anyone can use it. Like weaponsmiths or armorsmiths. Wouldnt something like this add marketablity to the ranger/scout class? There is practically no point in trying to sell traps or camps b/c the only people that could even use them can make their own!
The same thing can be done with traps too.. look at lower level grenades. Anyone can use those, why not letting traps act the same way? Again, it would actually make selling traps and camps a viable why to make money as a scout or ranger.
Anyway, in short... making the traps and camps usable by anyone but only craftable by a scout or ranger with the appropriate skill would be a nice win for us! Anyone else feel the same?
I thought the same thing since day one, but forgot about it at like day 5.
Now that you bring it back up to me, you do make sense.
There are other things to consider though, no one needs us around now, they certainly wont be looking for a Ranger to group if they all bought their own tents/traps off of us... we will just be sitting in our houses with a lot of cash for making camps/tents and we wont be needed otherwise. Effectively making us artisans.
Maybe if there were certifications like for a pistol lets say, you would need to complete one line of scout to be certified to use all the RANGER tents.
Ok think of it this way, a weaponsmith is capable of making a T21 rifle but he himself isn't certified to use it!
So, the certifications to MAKE and USE would have to be in two different branches.
Good thoughts, needs refinement.
I wouldn't mind if the lowest level Scoutcamp and trapscould be used by non-scouts, but anything higher should not be allowed.
Certainly no Ranger camps... maybe a trap or two though.
Gotta think thatif anyone can use Ranger traps or camps, then novice Scouts could use them to gain more experiance than they normally should.
I think we need people to depend on us for the higher level camping and trapping. I can see allowing anyone to be able to use the basic camp and lowest level traps. These low level camps and traps would not hurt are usefulness because we would still control the more effective traps and camps.
I am not a frequent poster on the forum but have had recent thoughts on the Ranger being a dead class. Once you obtain that level you really have nowhere to go. This is not a true complaint as many other classes may be having the same question. I also know we can sell hides and meats and earn cash on the side. I do not have a complete thought on this at this time. It does seam logical that with very little revamping the system could be reworked that the classes could be more reliant uppon one another. An example of this is the battle fatigue only being done in the cantinas. Again I really like playing the game and after I have had further time to think i will start a post of my own on this overall topic. If you have thoughts send me an email and i will work it in to my topic.
Thanks

Flynn, do you make a good point about the camps/traps. If anyone can use them then that aspect of the profession becomes an artisan, BUT we will still be needed in a group once /conceal and tracking come online. Those abilities are going to be very useful to hunting and survival in a group.
Ki_Gu, in response to the novice scouts using our traps to gain more xp than they should... I dont see this happening since trapping xp is based off the critter you are targetting, not the lvl of trap being used. I can use a Sonic Pulse or Flash Bomb on a gnort and still only get 50 xp off it.
The reason I brought this up in the first place is b/c I remember reading a post from the Devs saying they wanted each profession to have at least one decent way to make money on their own. Selling traps and camps to people, much like a weaponsmith would, seems like a perfect way to accomplish this.
I dont know why I added traps to that statement. I meant to refrence camps only.
Sorry bout that.
Guys,
Our primary "good" way to make money is through selling hides and bone - almost every crafting profession needs them, and we have the benefit of being able to get them the quickest.
I disagree with the idea that anyone should be able to use our camps - or even those with Novice skills. First, while yes, it would make us money, it would also make groups less reliant upon us in the field. Second, next to marksman, scout is the most common profession in the game. To allow our camps to be used by anyone means that everyone would be out using HTFBs (or improved camps, if you only let the ranks use them).
Plus, I consider the higher level camps to be "badges of office". I made Master, I get the HTFB. It provides incentives to continue up through the chain to the top.
There are plenty of new monkey making opportunies that have been added for us - I opt for the status quo here.

I am going to have to disagree with that one. I know it isnt in yet, but in a short while rangers are going to be the only profession that can track and mask scent others via the /conceal skill. I think those 2 things alone are going to make us far more valuable in the field than our ability to use high level camps/traps.
To allow our camps to be used by anyone means that everyone would be out using HTFBssigh... sorry about that... accidentally submitted

Much like they way everyone is able to use pets now? They did once, this just follows the same pattern of thinking.
Aside from selling hides and bone to artisans, what other new money making schemes are there? Sure, there are explore missions, but those are just conveluded versions of the destroy missions, which we already had.Not to mention theseare long and painful missions until we have a tracking ability.
Ok, Im really done with this post now ![]()
The same goes for traps. I made a wide assortment of traps for a close friend who is thinking of joining us, since he had most of the requirements already (high-level CH, who harvested a lot for hides and got a lot of camping XP from just putting them up to pull out and train pets - he capped his xp a long time ago for survival but never trained it despite his excess skill points and my attempts to train him). As far as I know, he was able to throw all of the traps, but his success rate was probably much lower that mine would have been, thereby taking a lot longer to gain XP and wasting a large percentage of traps that didn't succeed.
None of this seems out-of line with something like me as a rifleman picking up an elite carbine which I can still fire, but I'm just not very good at since I'm not certified. I'll still gain carbine XP by using it, but the amount of damage I'm going to do is going to be very low and I'll get less overall combat xp if I'm in a group.
I don't know.. I was in a rather large group a few nights ago with a lot of people I didn't know.. we needed a rest and before I could say anything someone pulled out a two tent camp. I didn't want to say anything until after the camp was over and I just let them know I have higher camps as a ranger.
Now that's one thing because that person was probably looking for scouting xp, and good for them. But if a Doctor pulls out a camp and gets unusable camp xp, that's a different story. I'd rather only people who can gain usable xp, be able to make camp.
But I also think that maybe camps should be usable by scouts/rangers who are one block behind being able to make them. They could gain better xp for using a camp they didn't create and it adds more to the market.
