Bows fit perfectly well in the Star Wars setting. Lucas has shown us many examples of archaic weapondry in the movies: from the slings and arrows used by the Ewok, to the vibro-polearms used by Jabba's guards, to the bowcasters used by Wookies, to the blowdarts used by Bobba Fett,to the lightsaber used by Jedi.

I am not an Ewok. The game tells you that the Ewoks have no technology. We do as Rangers. And even if you wish to shun technology and use a bow, why should you expect damage any better than a wooden staff or similar starting weapon? My character somewhat shuns technology but for an entirely different reason (HAM).

Vibro polearms, bowcasters and lightsabres all have a significant degree of technology. There is no analogy that links them with a bow and arrow unless you have it shoot laser bolts which, in essence, is what a bowcaster does. Blow darts are fine but remind me of our own darts, just not as deadly.

All of these options would require far less work from the animators, since they could use the throw animation that traps use. In fact, having them open up as options in the Ranger Trapping skill line would also provide for a good justification to other players.

Ideas:
Haveeach item crafted as a trap, but make the stacks hold 50 shots per stack. The weapons don't needto compete damage-wise with an Advanced Profession ability. Allow the damage for each of these "traps" to be equal to that of one of the third tier Marksman profession abilities:

Darts: Health Damage as per Body Shot II
Bolas: Action Damage as per Leg Shot II
Slings: Mind Damage as per Mind Shot II

I like it. But some of the animations on those might be hard too. I wouldn't want to see a limp bola hit an animal and not fly around in the air.

How about these?...

  • Weighted Net: Area of Effect Root "trap".

  • Barbed Net: Area of Effect Snare and minor Damage over Time "trap"

"Daddy, what's that bad man doing to my (Star Wars)?"

"Son, that bad man is (SOE), and he's **edit**ing your (Star Wars)."

Awsome idea! I was wondering how a bow came up in the first place. Why not a ranger specific hunting rifle? A rifle that would not do actual damage to the creatures HAM, but different types of ammocould be used. For example, poisons(some sort of DoT attack) ortranquillizer(slows the animal down). Anyone else like this idea?

I like that.... the bow seems to come from the stereotypical fantasy ranger, but it really doesn't fit with Star Wars

To the rifle rats - And where do I get the ability to use this fine weapon? I use pistols... rifles are already part of the game. Bows are new, so no need to spend any Skill Pts (oh oh, I got one left) on using it.

No, I do not want to change to rifles, you get owned at close range... try and shoot a vrelt on your leg with a T21, the misses tingle.

We already got darts.

I like the idea of weighted or barbed nets as traps tho. Give us some DoT or DoA stuff.

No rifles, rifles are for riflemen. (Lol, not ranting, just stating a fact... now I will rant) No rifles, no rifles...

besides, I don't wanna drop pistol and do rifle, I just got a Krayt

Just to further obfuscate the issue...
In the Old Testament....there is a reference to "the witches of Endor" which was a pagan cult..and Dagobah was a twist of the name of the city near where George Lucas grew up..."Bodega Bay"....remember the movie "The Birds"? That was filmed in Bodega Bay...one of the best California Beaches....but i digress

Back to the issue of specific ranger weapons....

Regardless of the form that these weapons come in (bow, sling, dart, pointy stick, harsh language) They should be ranger only and allow us to have a distinct advantage in PvCritter. I would also hope for PvP, but I dont want to get my hopes up yet. Any Ranger weapon that may come into play would be a great addition. personally i hope for bow....just looks cool.

I agree, bows may be very nice. My thinking was that Bolas, Darts, and Slings would make for an easier addition because they could be implemented as expendable traps... i.e. less dev time.

Heck call it an Ion Bow or something.....a Bow with a technology slant to it. Maybe tipped with poisen heck.....whatever but the bow works well. Maybe the Ranger is a "Purist" and likes at the Master level to hunt with the Bow. Could work like a poisen.....causing damage over time.
