Thread: NO Fly Zone

I am gonna start pulling old threads...

I remember numerous threads before mounts and vehicles regarding our value and place in SWG regarding movement.

Having been 'other professions' for the past six months, I can tell you, I dont miss terrain negotiation 1 bit...

Wait, I did miss it a few times my vehicle got disabled way out in the field and I had to run back to a city...

Which led me to think of 'no fly zones'..

Areas of the map INACCESSABLE by Vehicle (but you could still use mounts)

These zones would be at the edges of the map and corners and would contain certain content, like caves etc.

This in conjunction with a group terrain negotiation bonus would give us the 'Tour Guide of the Wilderness' vision I personally always had for Ranger...

That would be nice. Maybe they could coincide with the Ranger Reserves that someone posted the other day (I need to refresh my memory on that proposal).

group terrain negotiation 'belongs' to Squad Leader...And it's one of the few things that acually works for them. of course people don't notice that they're crawling faster than they normally walk, they just think lag/server jump is working in their favour.

The people in my group definately notice the change. It really is a useful skill. It finally let me convince people to walk around on planets instead of flying. The varying TN levels in my groups always used to make that hard.

Wow I like this idea....I never thought of TN being used in that context. When I was MR/SL i could run mountain areas faster than any speeder.

1) Big game tends to hide in more remote areas.

2) Would give a new meaning to mounts. Even for just the CH.

TANGENT: Think about it:

1) CH can make mounts

2) maybe TXFR them to RANGERS.....idea

3) Ranger could keep 6-8 in storage.

4) Get hired to go out with party, provide mounts, camo, campand (if areatrack worked) track big game.

5) oh and the TAXIDERMY....could provide trophies!!!

I think a good way to explaign this away would be that these areas would be dead zones( like in the first tomb raider movie where they had to use dog sled cause all the electronics died).( or a EMP zone)

Always bothered me that a bike could go straight up a mountian on Dathomir. It may go slow, but up it goes.

Ranger is not a profession. It's a lifestyle.

well the silly part is that I can run up a mountain faster than someone on a bike can drive up it......

I definitely like the idea of hacing places on planets where vehicles wouldn't work. You would definitely have to come up with a reason why they don't work, though, whether it be electrical interference or just the fact that the vehicle can't work on the terrain itself.

I just read on the kauri forums that they are about to slow the speeders way down. Not sure how much, but I remember seeing a comment by a dev at fan fest about how "vehicles and mounts should go the same speed for balance issues", so TN is going to be a nice skill to have once we can run everywhere as fast as someoen can get there on a bike. =P

oh well, just thought I'd let you guys in on what I found... not sure the validity of the post I read, though, so I suppose it could just be wild speculation.

It is a testiment to these forums and the active participation and fast moving threads that I feel I must do the following!

I dropped a similar idea into the roundtable discussion forum. Everyone wants larger planets but the problem really is is that we can travel everywhere so fast. If the planets were bigger the complaint would be that it takes forever to get there on my speeder and I have to repair every 2 round trips. Make speeders decay slower! lol

I really enjoyed my first month at launch running from Theed to Moenia exploring and what not. I often think about not using my speeder but hey.. this game takes forever as it is and time=money=playtime.

I was hoping one day they could implement something like electrical storms on high level planets like Dath that renders speeders useless. Would also make the use of creature mounts a lil more useful. I want a brand spankin new planet that allows no high level tech in it.. very basic stuff. Would be nice to hunt and run for a change without your lair getting spooked by some gimp on a speeder blasting through there.

New home of SWG Rangers!

& they do have a precedence for speeder malfunction from environmental effects on "high level" planetsin the movies...during the first part of Episode V it was more reliable to take tauntauns out into the wilderness of Hoth than to fly air speeders.

though i could see a lot of people having trouble with it, i for one would really like to see more environmental effects in the game (penalties for the extreme heat of Tat, or cold on Hoth if they put it in, for example). maybe replace cammo kits with enviroment kits, built using simmilar recipies, that would negate those penalties. this would create more "immersion", a new crafting economy for rangers, & a use for the planet-specific-recipie idea (which i think is the best part of cammo kits).
