Thread: Questions about area traps:
I do not know for sure, but it would make sense that you get X amount of trapping xp for landing a trap, whether it hits one creature, or multiple creatures. In fact, when you throw a Flash Bomb, you will notice that the message indicates the effect on a single animal ("Your trap failed to effect the creature" or "A piket becomes blinded by the effects of your trap") or whatever.
It is probably better this way, as it would become WAY too easy to rack up a ton of trapping xp by AoE (see the grenade/combat xp issue).
At one point in time if you tossed an AoE trap you got AoE XP. I recall tossing a sonic and nailing about 5 creatures with it, getting xp for all 5, and aggroing all 5. I figure if I aggro, I should get xp. Lately, I toss at creature A, affect A-E according to the icons, but only get XP for A. And yes, I get aggro from the crowd.
The AoE XP effect was not long-lived. Maybe just a few weeks until it was stealth nerfed, and this was a while back.

I was having trouble finding clusters of stuff inthe newb yards that were close enough to get multiple strikes, 4m seems about right, tho it probably is 5m really.
Total guff. Especially as the effect does next to nothing to the creatures you manage to aggro. Ah well.

Maybe the creatures need to be hit by someone before you'll get xp from area traps?
Wasn't there an issue a while ago where AOE attacks, in general, weren't working on mobs that hadn't aggroed yet (I think they just had to be in combat, not necessarily in combat with you)? Was this true for traps?

Or... maybe the xp is granted when you kill the creature like the weapon & combat xp. I haven't really looked since the window spam message was taken out. But... this COULD make sense.... you aggro 5, retreat, and kill one of them, you get the xp for one... had you killed all 5, you might get xp for each one. /shrug

WEll, Non AOE trap xp comes as soon as you land the trap, so I doubt that's it...
I just went in and tested with Flash Bombs on Level 31 & 33 pikets. You DO get the xp at the time the trap hits, not when you kill it as I thought earlier.
Level 33 piket: 483 trapping xp
Level 31 piket: 445 trapping xp
Hitting multiple level 31 pikets: 445 trapping xp total (not for each one) ![]()
Now, strangely... there was a 31 and 33 standing together... I aimed at the 33 with the trap, but only hit the 31, and got 445 trapping xp..... so... I DID get AoE trapping xp on that one (sort of).
