Thread: explore missions explained.. good source of $$ too
Too many people don't seem to understand explorer missions... I have completed several of these and they are actually a great mission type of scouts and rangers. Here are the details to make it simple for you.
- most important point. there are NO waypoints. Even that 0,0 white waypoint you get means nothing. ignore any references to waypoints or "unknown planet". These are "explorer" missions. You are supposed to explore the worlds to find the creature that you are trying to kill.
- it doesn't matter where you kill the creatures. If you get an explore mission for spiked krevols then you can run all over the planet (Naboo in this case) and kill spiked krevols wherever you find them. Next to a lair is the best place but you will find that you will need to do this 3 or 4 times in order to kill enough creatures. (30-45)
- adults and babies count towards the required kill number.
- there does not seem to be a time limit.
Here is the best part. If you can, take a destroy mission and then find an explore mission for the same type of creature. That way you will get a waypoint for the destroy mission and you can use that to find the creatures you are looking for. In some cases it may be hard to find a destroy mission for some of the higher level explore missions. You may also need to do a few destroy missions of the same creature type in order to kill the required number of creatures for your explore mission, but that's ok because you are making $$ on the destroy mission while working to the usually much larger payoff of the explore mission.
Also, as a Ranger you can collect a lothides/bones off all the 45 creatures in your explore mission and then turn around and sell those on the bazaar for another source of income.
AFAIK, if you group up in an explore mission the kill totals of the group count towards the final total. But I have not comfirmed this. Can anyone else?
Happy hunting!!
it is possible to match them up, but may be more difficult on some planets.. on Naboo you can get explore missions for rabid shaupauts and they are easy to find on destroy missions as well.. however you can also get explore missionsfor creatures that don't even exist on that planet.
You may have to equip different weapons, or group or ungroup before using a terminal to take a destroy mission that matches your explore/hunting mission. I've found it effective to equip my rifle, which I am less skilled with, rather than my pistol, when I want to solo an easier destroy mission.
Additionally, some creature lairs just seem to be more common than others, and their frequency varies with the region. My wife had a difficult time finding diseased bocatts unless she had a destroy mission for them, but easily finished a hunting mission for minor wortts, since they hop around outside of towns. Incidentally, she made the same amount of cash that I made for killing an equal number of cu'pa! I got more XP, naturally, and probably had more fun, but it still took me longer for more dangerous work. They still have work to do on mission pricing.
In any case, I haven't found the hunting missions to be excessively rewarding; they seem to have gotten the rewards in the ballpark of balance, IMO. Even the easy ones take a good deal of time to do. It seems there are womp rats everywhere...until you have a mission to destroy 45 of them.

yeah - 45 doesn't seem like a big number until you actually try killing that many. I say outside a shaupaut lair yesterday popping off the occasional shot at the lair to spawn more and I only killed about 20 before the lair ended up getting destroyed.
I do find the explore missions to be very fun though. Especially if you take one for a creature you haven't heard of before. It encourages you to travel and see the galaxy and you get good hides/bones to sell as well to add to the profits.
On a side note - SWG is 10x funner if you play with the exp meters OFF and don't worry about levelling all the time.
Killing 45 of the same mob didn't USE to be a problem, before the last patch. But since that patch I have noticed that lairs don't spawn as many mobs as they used to.
I used to be able to "knock" on the lair to force a spawn and if I just sat there 10-15 more mobs would spawn. Not anymore. You are luckyif youget 15 total from one lair.
I guess it depends on the lair, Alisa. I am currently after Tabbages on Corellia. My hubby found for me on the web a supposed "tabbage dungeon". There's no dungeon or cave or anything at that waypoint, but there was at least a lair of tabbages the first time I went, and I got all but 14 of the 45 critters I needed. No luck since then, though... I still need to find 11 more, but I can't find any missions for them, so far, and I haven't run across any in my daily treks across the planet.

Tabbages and Crimson Razorcats (not nice kittys at all!) can both be found up by Duego Gaurfel (sp?) on Corellia.
i am having an unfortunate time with these missions. i have noticed that whenever i do not have a mission, i cant go ten feet without tripping over three kinds of reds. take a mission for one of those critters and they are gone....intentional....i am beginning to think so. i took a mission for kaadu and for diseased shaupuats. these a normally both bothersomly plentifull. i then spent most of my evening running around the country side trying to find these things and found only a couple kaadu. what a waste of time. as to taking regular missions to find your quarry....be prepared to run back to the city ALOT. the nests are turning out 5-6 animals when they used to turn out at least twice that.
from my pesrpective this is yet another nerf. why cant we geteveryones bugs fixed first instead of adding another feature to slow down the action.
i acknowledge that this is my opinion only and not the experience of others. i still love my ranger and will plug away.

Explore missions seem pretty cool. I've only tried a couple. 45 animals is a lot, especially for those that don't spawn all that often. I, too have noticed a general decrease in spawns as of late. Hopefully this is temporary.
From my experience doing missions, I found that the kill only counts towards your explorer quest number if you did at least SOME of the damage to the creature. If the rest of your group kills something without you lifting a finger, you will not get credit.
I love explore missions, especially when teamed with a destroy mission for the same creature. Even better, team with two non-scouts. I agree, pick missions with no weapon in hand (let the AI think you are brawler) and while ungrouped. Then go do the 5 regular destroy missions as a group while gaining credits for the explore mission. I like to explain it to the guys as, "we do 5 missions, kill 45 crazed durnis... get the creds for the 5 missions and a 7k bonus at the end." Decent cash in this post nerf world. Decent harvesting too, as the other two guys can't, but I am nice and do share bone and meat. It's a pain to find 5 missions for the same animal, but hey, take some time to do it. Oh yeah, even better when a smuggler is along, he slices the term on his missions and jacks the payout up a few notches...hint hint hint on who should get the explore mission!!
We tried this getting 3 explore missions, it worked, was profitable, just took a while and we started to get antsy sitting on one lair waiting on spawn. I didn't time it or anything, just got boring.
